Ffs Osaka is a millennial flake.

Can't expect to pocket an annual $50 million in sponsorship and not answer a few trite questions after a match.

She brought this on herself by the manner that she went about things (childishly unilaterally just announcing that she was going to not do media question duties on social media) and subsequently didn't engage with the organisers even though they tried several times to contact her. (before the fine).

Then she picks up her ball and runs home with it.

Now the focus will be on her forevermore due to this.

The puke-inducing virtue signalling going on in the aftermath is a joke and the French Open are totally the bad guys here apparently.

The Americans in general have no love lost for the French so not surprising which side that media has landed on.

Nevermind the fact that she is shyte on clay anyways and has never been past the third round at RG.

Would she have pulled this stunt at the US Open? - no I would say.

It's a "powerful lesson in emotional intelligence" according to Inc

I couldn't quite figure out how someone can handle playing matches on the biggest stages (where every shot could be a mistake), but not interviews (where many questions can be batted away with stock answers, once you learn the art*).

As an introvert with social anxiety myself I can tell you that it's all a matter of comfort and confidence. For example, I have given speeches in front of hundreds of people and been fine because I was doing something where I basically had a script and was confident in my ability to perform. In contrast, I would get massive anxiety if I had to go into a room of strangers at say, a party and had to mingle with them for an evening.

Osaka is a world class tennis player and is probably "in the zone" when she is on the court. It's something that she has been doing all of her life and is likely second nature to her at this stage. It's quite possible that she is so focused on her game that she doesn't even think about the crowd of the cameras watching her matches.

In contrast to that, she likely is not comfortable public speaking - which is basically what a press conference is (except magnified to an extreme level, if you start thinking about all of the potential thousands or even millions of people listening to your words behind the mics and cameras).

As to why she does not use the suggested tactic of giving non-answers as a defense mechanism - who knows? That's a low-level, cynical tactic but it's so rampant across all sport that nobody even notices anymore. The rare time that someone says something honest or interesting is the exception. She's still relatively young and seems a bit naïve. Perhaps she has been trying to give earnest answers and completely draining herself/giving herself anxiety in the process since she's clearly an introvert*.

*For people who are extroverts this is all probably doubly incomprehensible and perhaps explains some of the venomous posts in this thread. The best description I have heard of the difference between them is that introverts recharge their batteries on their own and extroverts recharge their batteries around others. Introverts can of course go out and socialise like anyone else but they often find it draining and need some time on their own (or with people close to them) afterwards. Add to that that these are not binary states but more of a spectrum. It's quite possible that Osaka is a more extreme introvert than most introverts.

Osaka is a very easy target to pick on. She's a very young women. Its no surprise most of the people criticizing her so harshly are men as well.

Highlights the problems and difficulty when it comes to mental health and the lack of education there is around these issues. And the aggressive bile people open themselves up to when discussing their issues.

Plenty of sports stars have had to deal with the issues Osaka faces, and plenty of them used drugs and alcohol to cope. Andre Agassi biography was a fantastic read and insight. So was Paul McGrath's and hearing him speak on other issues. I remember he talked about how fearful he waa being an analyst for a match in rte and how John Giles had to help him through because he froze. Put that man on a football pitch and he was a rock. It's amazing how it can impact people in certain situations.

Yes plenty of tennis players had to deal with real genuine anxiety issues throughtout the history of tennis and I didn't see any of them trying a stunt like Osaka.

Did Monica Seles refuse to do interviews after being stabbed on court ?
Did Robin Soderling who suffered from mononuclueosis and anxiety attacks for over 9 years refuse to do interviews ?
What about Petra Kvitova who was also stabbed ?
I could go on and on.

Mental health and anxiety/ stress is a very serious issue and it should never be belittled but certain people are weaponising it as a tool for alterior motives.

Thats why people are critical of Osakas behaviour, its disengenuous.

Fair play to Popyrin hanging in this set. Thought it was over when he lost that game when he had 3 set points.

Why would people refuse to do interviews after being stabbed? I fail to see how that is relevant.

I'm sure Soderlin didn't refuse because he felt he couldn't, and he probably couldn't afford to either.

I do wonder why anyone would want to force people to do these things if they find them difficult.

The reality is you've no idea if it is disengenious. You are just guessing.

Why did she not mention her issues before ?
If she indeed has social anxiety and depression for 3 years, why not use the WTA mental health support ?
Why not quietly try to avoid pressers using medical reasons ?

Instead she arrogantly tried to pull a stunt.
She shamelessly used mental health issues to gain sympathy on social media for the sole reason she didnt want to face questions about her performance on clay.

Now that she realises that her social media world is an empty bubble and that actual people (her peers) and organisations (ITF, Slams) are not going to bend to her whims, she bails .
She flies back to LA and issues a fake statement to make her look like a martyr.

She is extremely shrewd at advertising herself and Brand Osaka.
Her social awkwardness feels more like a brand image.
For a socially awkward person she sure does a lot of non-tennis related interviews and gigs.

The rest of your post is just a fairly silly rant. You genuinely seem quite bitter about this. Social awkwardness is just a brand image, ffs. Do you actual read what you post? It's embarassing. You sound like one of those snowflakes on social media tbh.

If Carla is going to beat Sloane, she'll probably have to do it in straight sets. She's currently leading 6-3, 1-1.

There is no need to infantilise people suffering from these issues either. Neither party has handled this very well - no matter how you feel, you can not just announce off hand at the last minute that you won't be completing your contractual obligations and get a free pass. The French Open clearly over-reacted also.

Also, no matter how much or how little fans of the sport care about the press conferences (and this is pretty universal across all sports I think), those paying for everything do care about them.

Carla fell just short in the end against Sloane, who woke up just as the match was almost lost. Very nearly a fairytale comeback, but not to be.

Meanwhile, Djokovic is trundling along against Sandgren in the "official" night match.

Itv4 knocking off at 10 every evening when they are evening matches on is going to be very annoying.

I wonder how firm they will be with that in the second week, say its a Federer/Nadal SF which runs on a bit?

On the one hand I feel like it is best to be fair. On the other that would be a terrible idea and they will absolutely make an exception.

Obviously a freak accident but weird that Kvitova injures herself at a press conference at the French and has to pull out of the comp with all the talk around if they should be made mandatory.

Not sure anyone saw that as a reason to avoid them!

Osaka managed to trip herself up over a press conference without actually even attending one!

    * utterly frivolous comment alert *

I haven't been a big watcher of tennis on the telly other than Wimbledon in recent years - and my takeaway so far from RG is that there's a lot to be said for the all-whites rule they have!

Yes, it's just a stupidly Brit tradition, really - but Zverev and his opponent look like they're playing in their boxers!!

Agree. I have found some of Serena's outfits in recent years absolutely horrific.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,756 ✭✭✭sxt

Serena looks completely shot as an athlete . Her legs and reflexes aren't there anymore. All her opponents hit the ball harder than her now. Can't see her getting to a quarter final in a major again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Wouldnt write serena off but there are just too many playing at a decently high level now to be anyway confident another slam is within reach. If she beats Collins next, and thats no gimmee, then i think she'll make qf okay, but with Sabalenka likely in wait, i think that's as far as she'll go here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,157 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

Clay is Serena's worst surface tbf.

Wimbledon will be more fun for her, she loves the grass, fans love her their and her aura will be enough to get her to week 2 and then who knows.

I have a small bet on the Sharapova clone:P looks like its between her and Saba on that side to get to the final.

Ill be surprised if Serena gets through Danielle Collins, who looked very solid last autumn in Paris. Getting taken to three sets today was a big error. She just can't afford to lose that extra energy. She will be worked tirelessly by Collins.

A cracker of match tomorrow on paper between Cilic and Federer. Nor expecting much in the Nadal/Gasquet match other than a Nadal win, cant even see Gasquet making a match of it. On the ladies there is Pliskova vs Stephens don't see any other womens matches that catch the eye besides that one.

Well they just said in commentary that the night matches will stop on Wednesday so will only be around for one quarter final match. Thank God. Going to be cut short again this evening, and this match has a bit of legs in it too.

Gasquet will be lucky to get 8 games. He is nowhere the near the level he was a few years ago when he was floating around the top 10.

My advise to you would be not waste your time and instead watch Gasquet backhands on youtube which tbf are very entertaining. :p

Normally Federer vs Cilic would be one to look forward to but Cilic has been in woeful form for the past year, he isn't half the player he uses to be unfortunately. I think his ranking has slipped back towards 50 now.

Gasquet a similar story and Nadal has always been a nitemare match up for him. Not sure what it is about French players but two very random head to heads:

    Nadal 16 Gasquet 0
    Djokovic 17 Monfils 0

I was thinking that about Cilic, he hasn't been the same since he came back from injury.

Great match on now between Berrettini and Coria. Berrettini is playing some great stuff.

Some serious "needle" in the Federer-Cilic match, after Federer got a time violation for getting his towel while Cilic was ready to serve.

Hopefully they are going to enforce that against Nadal as well.

He got a serving time violation in the 1st round I think. In fact, he gets one of these in quite a few matches, but the big question is always: will he get a second one and lose a first serve?

Also, it's a bit ironic that Federer got called for not playing to the pace of Cilic's serve, as Cilic has been known to bounce the ball over 30 times before serving.

Federer now a break up early in the 3rd (1 set all), so I think he's "over" it by now.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,012 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

Nadal is doing it more and more while receiving. Puts the hand up because he's not ready. Usually because he's had to pick his arse 27 times.

Horrible miss by Federer at 0-40. I think he will rue missing that one.

The blue and white flag could be the winner this year! Tsitsipas is the only player on the other side of the draw that could have a realistic chance to beat Nadal or Djkovic in the final. Tsitipas is going to win multiple French opens
