Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Aye, very popular years ago, along with Sinead & Niamh.

Gone out of favour with the Geolscoil types now.

They want something more 'distincive' now.

Read, More hard to spell & pronounce than ever..

    Dicks...
And don't forget Roisin, that was really popular too ;)

Yeah - but the names you grew up with were Sean Aoife Sinead etc. You didnt have a Siopadoireacht or Cairead or Ispini in your class did ya???

    My name is Cairead.

Not a fan of the name "Edwina".

The name Daniel has been passed down to the eldest son on my dads side for 5 generations alternating between Daniel and Dónal to tell us apart. I even have the same middle name as my grandad. My brother is called Eoghan, love seeing non-Irish speakers attempting that :D

Personally, I hate the name Jacinta.

I love the name Daniel (as in Daniel Craig not Daniel O'Donnell :D) but I don't like Danny or Dan etc...

Sure was! Not seen now much though...

I don't mind Irish names, such as Sean or Tara.

    Theyr'e quite nice.

Some of the stuff they dredge up can be quite cringemaking though.

I'm glad that my name (Chris) travels well in English speaking countries throughout the world.

None of this 'how do you spell that?' or 'what does that mean?' type shoite I've seen with friends travelling over the years.

My grandson is called Daniel and I call him Dan. It's a strong name and he is a lovely chatty good natured lad of 7 years and I am very proud of him. He is my wee man.

Daniel has been among the most popular names in Ireland for many years now.

    Ireland
    (2010)
Jack, Seán, Daniel, James, Conor, Ryan, Adam, Alex, Luke, Dylan

I am wondering when people around Ireland and the UK will tire of calling their new boys Jack. There's going to be so many Jack's in schools in the coming years that dozens will turn round in the playground when they hear "JACK".

    Nice one.

If/when I have a kid (who would have to be a boy, considering the name) he will be called naoise (my favourite name from Irish but also doubles for my love of Nietzsche)

I think its quite silly when people associate a certain name with only 1 animal and nothing else. I have never heard a dog being called Jake before, but it doesn't matter. People do go "SHUR THATS ONLY A HUMANS NAME ONLY!!" if someone calls their dog something like Michael etc. It would be understandable if it was a name like Fluffy though.

So he should choose names to make the jobs of people who write down and pronounce names easier?

I find this interesting, I have a few foreign neighbours who have named all their children traditional names from where they are from, but Irish people freak out about "if they go abroad, people cannot pronounce it" so what?

I have met some ridiculous ones,
    Shakira,
    Stacey - for a boy
3 sisters that are named after Charlies Angels

You can add Attracta to that bunch. It's mainly a nuns name, never fails to send shivers down me :o

You gotta love the name on one of Silvio Berlesconis broods 'Ruby the Heart Stealer'

Remember once working in New Zealand in cafe with a girl from Cork called Grainne. Her name badge proudly displayed this and low and behold I had a long summer of listening to Yanks say to her 'Wow, is your name really Granny ?'

What about the old tradition of naming girls with boys names?

I know 2 women in their 60s called Declan and Michael. And they aren't nuns.

Also know a man in his 40s whose middle name is Emmanuel.

Its happening in America in recent times. Naming girls things like "Taylor" or "McKenzie", which are surnames ffs.

I remember buying car insurance from an Irish woman named Shakira about 8 years ago. To think of the abuse that girl must have got growing up in a Dublin housing estate, maybe in the 1970s and 80s.

yeah i had that too, my grandfathers headstone in the graveyard- "John Mary...", you can imagine me at seven years of age reading that trying to get my head around it! serious wtf's! :D

but there are some unusual names in my family anyway- Canice, Aloysius, Ignatius (after ignatius rice!) and then the one normal name they came up with- "Jack", after my grandfather, apparently they werent allowed put "Jack" down on the birth cert as it wasnt a saints name!

course the above could also be a load o shíte too, my father was an awful billy bullshítter for his "stickin it to the man" stories!

    worst name i ever heard-

woody allen (bad enough already), woody allen's son with his step-daughter, soon-yi... the child's name?

    "satchel", for a boy! :D

No, one point, just badly put across due to severe insomnia!!!! I believe people should choose a name of their country. It is lovely going to a toddler group and meeting a little girl or boy with these unusual names. I hate peoples attitude towards not giving a child a beautiful name because others may not know how to pronounce it. My son has a normal name, I get asked the whole time how is it spelt as there is 2 ways of spelling it.

Hmmm....I want to post something, but I don't know whether to go for the two most common options in the thread so far....will I express my prejudice about something that doesn't affect me, or make up a story about a name I've supposedly overheard?
