Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. There's no doubt that they've made a pigs ear of the launch, but I don't believe that they think the desktop is the core platform. From everything they've said mobile apps are on the imminent horizon, Chromecast/airplay support included. They've also said Apple/Android TV apps are next after that. They know what's up and they're rolling out a beta now, and the choice for desktop was probably chosen as it would be the least stressful on their bandwidth as it gets up and running.

Okay so IMO your bandwidth/capacity is capital, RTÉ have stated all along that they where investing in capital, as already pointed out the software is standard no need to reinvent the wheel and look of the player is superficial.

RTÉ are suppose to be launching a new look player in tandem with their investment into bandwidth/capacity.

Going by BARB figures for BBC/ITV/c4/etc there is little difference between desktop, smart TV/STBs, phones and tablets.

Does anyone have any technical info on the video quality?

The old player seemed to go up to a max of 576p (and 2500k bitrate?). The new player looks like 1080p to me, but can't get any info. It's seems its not possible to capture anything from it with youtube-dl or similar.

iOS devices are updated with the new app. Nothing on Android so far.

    Edit: On android now too.

It is not on android. They have just changed the logo in the play store to red but the app hasn't been updated yet.

Using it to watch the One o'clock news now on my Chromecast and switch between channels. So far, so good. Getting playback controls is a bit finnicky but it's a good start and I hope it continues to improve on what looks like a fresh and seeming successful reboot.

My only issue is the "live" archive channel, it is just loading videos from the player rather then a continues stream like RTÉ ONE etc. There are certain show worthwhile repeating much of it isn't that good. Why not put RTÉ ONE +1 on the player if you have the archive channel/food channel?

It is not on android. They have just changed the logo in the play store to red but the app hasn't been updated yet.

I must have imagined it so when I updated and opened the app on my phone earlier.

Looked again and it's still the updated app.

    I still don't have it.

My app in the play store says it was last updated in September 18.

The info on the app has been updated but not the app itself. Strange.

Edit; I have it now. I uninstalled the old one first.
Maybe there was just a delay in getting out to all devices.

Some great stuff there in the archive.
I see they have a documentary on Christy Ring.

Rte must have a fabulous collection of old documentaries.

A few I see on there...
    Christy Ring
When Cathal Shannon met Muhammad Ali
    Festival Folk - Christy Moore
This is Christy - singer Christy Dignam
David Bowie - the last 5 years
    Joe Dolan
The Late Late Show's 'For one night only'

Working well on my Android phone, looking forward to testing this on the Firestick later on

Casting option works well. No native Android TV app yet, but not the end of the world

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭Tigerandahalf

There is a lot of TG4 stuff there too.
Not sure if they are co productions or what.

The button at the top left corner allows you to register/sign in. This will allow you to pick up where you stopped watching something previously.

It also has subtitles, Irish sign language and push notification options.

    Archives a brilliant addition.
Chromecast working well, quality great considering the times for bon voyage and echo Island.

Dublin Village an unexpected bonus too :)

I can’t get it to Airplay to either of my Apple TV 4K. The tv just blinks briefly and the app eventually crashes after a few failed attempts. Anyone else have luck with AirPlay?

The Smart Tv app hasn’t updated yet, on my LG!

Seems to be working fine for me. I've had nothing but frustration with the old one.

Last night I watched a few things from the archives including the Christy Moore gig from 1984 on the laptop. No issues whatsoever. That cough- line of code for ABP -cough seems to have worked a treat. I put the app on the android phone this evening. I did a test run on last night's Fair City. 90 secs of ads at the start and 90 secs halfway through. I can live with that as long as the main show runs smoothly. Which it did. I'll try Chromecast later when I've the TV to myself.

Just watched an episode of Bon Voyage from the 90s - it seemed a lifetime ago.

A skiiing holiday in Austria, I can't remember the female presenter with the red curly hair.

Cathal O'Shannon on the Dingle Peninsula

Finally a camping trip to Brittany, France. I don't recognise the male presenter. He seemed to have 5 or 6 kids in tow.

    No ads on that programme.
I can see the archives being a real gem.

I'd love to see Murphy's Australia again.

Whatever about RTÉ Food, it’s a pity they don’t put RTÉ Archive on Saorview(at least) as a proper channel. I could see it been popular and they could put adverts in between and during the programs like a normal channel. But unfortunately there’s no chance of that happening.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33 JMcGee

Remember putting on RTE2 on Christmas morning with Bosco on in the background while you opened and played with your presents? My feeling was like "I love Bosco, but I love opening my presents even more but I'm so happy that I have both at the same time right now!". RTE Player…work your magic for me this year LOL

Just checked the new app and it looks great. Also, when you cast from phone to Chromecast it doesn’t show the ads beforehand which is noce. This is the way all4 works to iirc. Happy to see the old show Trivia there too, missed S2 at the time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 Righthammer

The app is not working for me ..stops playing near the end of adds .Its not casting either for me..just shows rte player on cast screen but no video appears..not sure why they didnt test this app properly.

Will try another device later but not holding out much hope ..

It's not working well with Chromecast at all. It'll play fine but there's no slider to go back or forward. Just seems to be a Play option, that's all.

The archive series Dubalinn: A personal view seems to be audio only on this for Android anyway

Anyone get an updated app on Samsung smart TV? One I have hasn't worked in 2 years so hoping a new version just might

I was never one of RTE's biggest fans, but the new app is excellent and from testing it yesterday. The streams load fast and in high quality. Hopefully, they will continue to improve on the app and soon roll out an app for Android TV.

I keep getting a notification to send a screenshot for feedback for a hockey app which is coming from the RTE player. I'm on Android.

HockeyApp is a service for distributing beta test apps before you push them to production on the store. It allows developers to collect crash reports and beta testers to submit screenshots.

Bit weird getting notifications for HockeyApp on a production build. :P

Anyone having trouble with Airplay to Apple TV? It'll play one add and then nothing.

At least you're getting an ad. I get absolutely nothing. Screen flickers and that's all.

I think people are being too harsh on them. All start-ups hit a few bumps along the road. Give them time. I'm sure it'll all come good…

As I said, It's way better now on the desktop/laptop and android phone. Credit where it's due. However, the chromecast end of things needs to be sorted. It's very glitchy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 76 ✭✭littlecopilot

Doesn't cast for me from android (note8) to nvidia shield. The background rte player image appears on nvidia alright but that's it. Pity that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,539 ✭✭✭RocketRaccoon

It was working fine the last few nights but no joy with chrome cast last night, no big deal really as I just cast the screen to the tv instead.

Is it an android box you're using ? Keeps playing the first ten seconds on a loop of everything for me on an android box. Other times it just decides to play round without a picture :-(

Tried casting from an iPhone to nvidia shield today and it worked flawlessly.

Working fine again last night on chromecast. Hopefully app will update soon for LG. So far very impressed with the functionality and love the archive box sets.
