I am dumbfounded by some of the recent comments on Johnny Walkers. Are we definitely talking about Mayor's Walk? I bring my kids in there for an occasional treat and every time the staff make a big fuss of the kids even though it could be a month since our last visit. And the chips are easily the best I have eaten anywhere. I rarely get a burger but it was always cooked fresh and tasted delicious. I don't recognise the place that has been lambasted on the last few pages.

I never get burgers there, but I have seen other customers ordering them and they have been microwaved, which surprised me.

I love their fish and their scollops, but the chips are only ok. Humdinger's are much nicer.

walkers are incredibly uptight with their chips . wouldn't be surprised if they count them individually

Been to a couple of take away in recent weeks - Dooleys Park Road and following some good reviews The Cleaboy.

Dooleys - my preferred of the two. Clean, good chips, middle of the road chicken fillet burger. 7/10.

Got the same in Cleaboy. Very surprised to get an actual fillet of chicken in a bun! Good in the sense that it's probably healthier, but a poor bun and sloppy filling. Chips were grand, nothing special. 6/10.

Had a snackbox from Brennan's beside Dunphys on New Years Eve. Absolutely divine! The chips! Top notch!

It's a pity Emarald Isle closed up last year. Really enjoyed their Chicken Fillet Burger. The Pizza Dome which has replaced it, is a take-away which really annoys me, even from walking past it. The window is taken up with half flashing lights, and then deals on bright luminous green and yellow cards plastered all over it too.
Compare that to the Marion chipper which doesn't need such cheap looking sights and flashing lights.

I could be wrong, but didn't the owners of the Emerald Isle move back up to Danny's on Barrack Street, so you can still get their lovely chicken burger! :D

No offence about Dooleys chipper, they create employment and some people love there food but when you walk into a chipper and served food in under 2 minutes you know there food is pre-cooked.there chips and burgers are terrible.however I hear there chicken fillet burgers are nice.I've no bother waiting in a chipper 10-15 minutes once I know its all cooked from fresh

That Burrito place was quite nice I thought, good for a change from burgers and chips but also a nice meal in itself.

    Hot Corner
    Ballbricken Takeaway
    Walshes
    Roma Takeaway
    Lombard street

I'm with you there on the chips. Burgers are only ok, but the best chips by a long shot.

In the city the golden fry does a nice chip. Always has

Dunno. We got two meal deals last weekend, and we could only eat one of the portions of chips between the two of us. We kept one bag, and heated them up in the oven the next day.

I've always found their chips to be more than enough. The large chip in particular was easily enough for at least 2 adults and one kid in our house.

Lombard Street is a solid Take Away, Its open late and they do really good deals. Best Taco Chip in the town by far!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,174 ✭✭✭hardybuck

Got chips from Humdingers recently and found them to be extremely average, probably below average actually. This may have been an off night however.

Here are my favorites at the moment:

Amigos (on John St) for burritos - the slow cooked pork and beef is delicious. I also love the chile con carne. All served with fresh salads and homemade salsas - it's a great spot and very reasonable :) Great nachos too!

Doolys (Peoples Park/Tramore) for fish n chips - we had great fish and chips in there recently.

O'Shea's (Dunmore East) for fish and chips - I love that you get a wedge of lemon with your fish (Doolys take note!). It's also nice to have a selection of fish to choose from (calamari, monkfish, ling, etc).

Coney Island for pizza - we had a very decent pizza from here a while back.

I haven't tried any kebab places in Waterford yet - are there any that make their own breads on the premises? (like Zaytoon in Dublin.. yum yum)

I like Walshs on the yellow road nice food and cheap enough too

Andys by the fourm is nice but slow when you order something

Place was dirty as sin the last time I was there too. Will not be going back.

Had a Dooly's by the People's Park recently for the first time in ages, chips were savage!

I was in Dooley's at the weekend myself and thought the chips were quite good, and a big improvement from the last time I was there about 6 months ago. Fish was quite tasty as well.

Rockin' Joes Limerick has been served with a closure order:

Is the Waterford branch run by the same owner?

I don't think the cleaboy is great at all. I work nights mostly so don't really get the chance to eat fresh takeaway food unless it's hilbillys or chic king.

Nicest for me would be the Marian

I would have always agreed with you about the Marian, but the last two times I have been in there, I was disappointed. (about 6 and 3 weeks ago)

I've been to Lombard street a good bit recently. Lovely food!

Would disagree regarding Lombard. Felt that the oil musn't have been as hot as it might of been because the chips were pretty flat.

Cleaboy - so so. Chicken fillet burger was literally a fillet of chicken in a bun! Not that I'm complaining, but it was certainly different.

I find the standard overall in Waterford pretty mediocre.
