Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

For those that have the iPad subscription offer coming to an end, it is worth going through the cancellation dance over the phone. Just done it there and the initial offer of €10 for three months was then upped to €10 for six and then finally trumped by the 'well this offer is really only for new subscribers but because you are a valuable customer, my manager has authorised it' deal of the Bose speaker for 12 months. Highly amusing as each time I refused the offer, the guy acted so hurt and pained that I had rejected his clearly fantastic deal that I nearly felt sorry for him! :)

If you want the speaker (like me), it saves having to cancel and then subscribe as a new customer. The guy on the phone just rolled it over. Speaker is sent out in 4-5 weeks.

Thanks! This has been on my to do list.

Anybody else still waiting for the speaker? I subscribed in August and nothing yet. Slightly worryingly, the speaker seems to be discontinued by Bose. The current offer from The Times is 2 for 1 Odeon tickets each week, which is of absolutely no use to me whatever - it would cost me more than I'd save to drive the two hour round trip to the nearest one!

If anyone knows who I should be contacting / complaining to, I'd be most grateful; the information on the Times site is sparse, to put it mildly.

FYI I have been told that the warranty on these iPads is only 12 months as they were a bulk b2b buy.

Might not be an issue for many, but my LCD failed for no apparent reason 18 months in and it just isn't worth repairing at the costs quoted (€200 odd).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

My minimum period for the Times subscription is nearly up.

Looks like the current offer is a 2-for-1 in the Odeon (on the Irish site) and a Nespresso on the UK site.

Can anyone confirm? I might be tempted to stay on for a Nespresso, but I have an Odeon Unlimited card so that option doesn't appeal to be AT ALL.

Push it with them... it sounds like they are chancing their arm.

No good reason to renew then...

I tried Apple website too and they also want €231.30. They can feck off, I'd be much happier spending that on a decent Android tablet. Apple products are now banned from my house. :D

I have been looking for the T&Cs that I/we agreed to, but can't find them. Not on the site or my email.

the odeon cinema tickets are normal offer as part of the sub, not a sign up offer.

I'd ring them - the nespresso offer may still be applicable to Ireland - it may be that they haven't updated the Irish Site.....

Is that not the max cost? If it costs less, they will refund the difference.

No, I was quoted for a new LCD and digitiser (not broken now, but more than likely will break during the LCD replacement procedure). Maybe it is coincidentally around the same figure to repair through Apple, but they're not getting a cent from me.

Got one yesterday.. 'Hotel Chocolate' very well packaged - excessively so!

Reminded me to check when subscription is up.. June - I wonder if they'll have any enticing offers on the go then!

Can someone tell me if the edition of the sunday times on both these sites is the Irish one that i can buy in a bricks and mortar shop?

Yes, as far as I know it is the same edition. If you change the settings, however, I believe you can set it to the UK edition.

Only got around to cancelling my sub recently. They offered me 2 months free to see if I would change my mind. There wasn't any product offered, no ipad, nespresso etc.

Declined politely, there are a number of better, cheaper ways to get your news.

when all the ipad offer subs start to expire, and people don't renew, there'll be other offers - i hope!

My sub isn't up until May

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yeah I cancelled last month too. They offered a discount subscription for the next few months but I declined.

I had a date set in my calendar for the end of my minimum subscription (but I'm pretty organized).
I expect that a lot of people will just forget about it and let it run and run...

They were giving away Bose Minilink II speakers around last September time. Got one myself and was happy enough to sub for another 12 months.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭Carroller

Just a reminder. My twelfth month for Bose speaker got taken today. Unless the next deal was really good I'd have no interest in signing up again after the effort to cancel. They offered me two discounted deals to stay but nothing for free like previous deals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,659 ✭✭✭Luckycharms_74

Called up today to cancel and they offered me half price on a rolling contract. They don't have any offers at the moment but may have in the future.
€10 a month is not bad really

Edit: Got email confirming the offer but its only for the next 3 months. they did say I could ring back in October for another deal

Cancelled months ago, sales person confirmed once one got a free offer ,it won't be repeated

If you go to Odeon, the 2 for one cinema tickets at weekends pays for itself if you go even once a month. Not a bad deal.

Well, that seems wrong. I got the Ipad offer initially and when I went to cancel last year they offered the bose offer.

This. I get to cancel my subscription at the end of next month. Offer has been good to me with an iPad and the excellent Bose speaker.

posting this in case other people have issues with faulty ipads.

I also had a display issue with my ipad - over the 12 month warranty but under the 24 month consumer law warranty.

I had already spoken to Sunday Times - they said call Apple but they don't have any receipts or proofs of purchase. They did send an email confirming that i had received an ipad from them in the offer if I needed it.

I called into Compub for them to have a quick look - the guy said that the issue was either the graphics card or the display. He said if they submitted on my behalf, it would be knocked back immediately as out of warranty but if I contacted them myself they would most likely repair/replace under the consumer law. However, he said that I needed to ask for a Senior Technical Advisor as soon as the call was answered.

I went in via the apple support website, then "talk to us", then "ipad", then "repairs/physical damage", then "display image distorted or blurred", then "talk to "apple support now", then "enter serial number", then "request an exception" - fill in details and they will then call call you. Explain the context, then immediately ask for a Senior Technical Advisor

Senior Techie said that she needed to see the receipt of purchase. I explained that it was a Sunday Times times sub offer and I didn't have a receipt. I sent a screenshot of the dispatch notification email which I had received from Apple when the ipad was shipped, which has original purchase and invoice order numbers. She accepted this as proof - so ipad was collected last Friday and replacement is being delivered today. No messing, no arguing, just sorted very quickly. I'm very impressed with the service from Apple.

Nah, TBH I don't miss it at all. It's the last Apple device I'll ever touch - I have had too many bad experiences with their sh!te over the years (iBook x2, iPod x3, and this iPad).

I'm near the end of my annual subscription at 8 euro a month. Do they contact you at end of 12 months or simply roll it to higher rate if you don't take action?

Hoping they'll contact me and I can get another 12 months at 8 euro. Is that wishful thinking?

No AFAIK/remember you have to contact customer care,or else it rolls on, might be wrong but from what I remember that's it

There is no such thing as the "24 month consumer law warranty". There is protection afforded by the Sale of Goods Act, but it is between you and the seller, I.e. the Times. This allows you to claim up to 6 years. OP got lucky with Apple, there is no onus on them to do anything outside 12 months.

IIRC EU directive is 2 years minimum warranty for faulty goods. Also, according to Apple, Irish consumer law requires them to repair for 6 years - https://www.apple.com/ie/legal/statutory-warranty/ where faulty.

Not sure what the situation is where you're not the original purchaser tho.

The 2 years was never enacted in Ireland. We had better coverage with the Sale of good act, so we didn't need to enact the part of the directive which gave lesser coverage.

I didn't know that. I've quoted the 24 month thing directly with manufacturers successfully a few times (HTC, Acer, and Asus). Although now that you mention it, Dell sent an engineer out to replace the screen on a laptop I had that was well over 24 months old. They initiated it too, I wasn't bothered.

Not sure what the situation is where you're not the original purchaser tho.

It's a grey area I think - only for the fact I had the dispatch notification from Apple to my email address, Apple wouldn't have accepted the service request. Sunday Times had no documents or proofs of purchase at all, let alone one they could match directly to my ipad.

there is an onus on them if there was an inherent fault with the device. Apple checked the device, found that there was a fault, and replaced it under consumer law. No luck involved.

Consumer Law covers the consumer who buys the product from their retailer.

This was a gift from The Times for taking out a subscription. You can’t claim consumer law on a gift you have received.

Apple are liable under consumer law if the customer buys the product for personal use directly from them.

This iPad was bought by The Times as a business purchase.

The person in question didn’t buy the iPad from Apple. So yes, they were very lucky to have it covered by Apple as a consumer law claim against them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,796 ✭✭✭ablelocks

I don't think Apple as a company take luck into account when responding to customers, even indirect ones. I had a faulty product, they replaced it within 4 working days.

I posted the detail of how my case was handled in case it may help other people who may find themselves in a similar situation. There was no argument or questioning from Apple about warranty or law - they accepted my request, checked the device and replaced it. (I'm sorry now I mentioned anything about warranty or law - I should have known it'd attract the legal experts...)
