    Hello Shindig-jp,

I believe that MCC Brokers are an excellent option to arrange the customs clearance. They have a solid reputation and specialise in clearing motor vehicles.

In relation to bringing in your motor vehicle, I believe it has to have been registered at least 6 months in your name before you are entitled to bring it in under a transfer of residence and avoid VAT and VRT. You also would have had to work and live 12 months abroad in order to qualify. Have a look at the following link ; http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/tax-relief-transfer-residence.html

I am sure MCC would be able to offer further guidance and assistance, but feel free to contact me any time if there is anything you think I can do for you.

    Best regards,
    RUDOLF 289

    Cheers Rudolf.
Thanks again , I'm up to speed with transfer of residence etc. I must say your job as a fright forwarder can be quite exciting in a way.

I have been tracking my cargo stuff on http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/ from Japan , had one container arrive which was a small education dealing with Irish customs , now have my mini truck coming in Ro/Lo which should arrive in about 7~8 days.

This is all a new venture for me and I am now seriously considering a change of career to import/export .

Any tips on how I can get my head around this ? (FAS ? ) No! forget that suggestion .

Is there a collage for a mature student that I can learn the ropes ? or do I need to apprentice myself with a company ?

    Hi shindig-jp,

I would think that to get an apprenticeship with a freight forwarder as a "mature student" may be challenging, especially in the current climate where people are let go in this sector.

The Irish Institute of Freight Forwarders offer a FIATA diploma course. That may be the most closely associated with the practical aspects of freight forwarding. http://www.iifa.ie/

The two links below are more in the logistics area.
    http://www.cilt.ie/
    http://www.nitl.ie/

Hope this helps and best of luck with your new venture

    Hi,

    General question,

If one wanted to purchase products from Chinese manufactures. Merchandise to stock a retail fashion store. Jewellery-clothing-shoes etc.

    Where would someone start?
the Internet is a maze, I wouldn't dream of choosing and buying straight from on line pictures.
I would like to take a trip, but where do you go to find out the factories who make the goods.

Would attending trade fairs be a good Idea? would trade fairs in China cater for English speaking customers?

    Many questions!!!!

Thanks a mill for help x:D

    Hi Rudolf,

Can you PM me with your details.

I am in the process of ordering 2 40HQ containers and i need a quote from you. The combined weight of the 2 containers is 12.67 tonnes. I would need these to be collected from the warehouse in Liaobu Town (Guangdong) on to Shenzhen port and on to Dublin Port. What type of price should i expect to pay.

Look forward to hearing from you and just to let you know we all appreciate your help.

    Regards,

    W

mcc brokers (www.mccbrokers.com) are excellent for customs clearances - deal with Gary in there.

aa economy freight worldwide for personal effects, excess baggage and car shipping would be the best company for shipping.

    Hello Folks,

Just wondering how much roughly it would cost to get a 20ft container from China to Dublin, including all insurance, charges by Dublin Port, cost of getting container delivered from port to Dublin address etc.

If any of you have done this perhaps you might let me know of the rough total cost involved.

One other thing, does the weight of the goods in the container effect the price at all? For example would a crate filled with lead cost the same to transport as one filled with polystyrene?

    Thanks for your help.

My ex-girlfriend used to do stock sourcing for an Irish accessories company. She'd go to Hong Kong and India, visiting warehouses and factories etc. I don't know how they made initial contact with the manufacturers, but it did seem that there was a lot of travel involved and a lot of negotiation etc.

Trade fairs may be a good start, but I've also heard that what is exhibited at trade fairs can often be misleading as the exhibitors would put out their best quality stuff that may not be a good representation of their average piece coming off the production line.

If I were you I'd try make contact with others who are importing the specific types of things you are interested in and try find out where they are ordering from. It may be best to go for a more expensive option initially, just to get yourself established and ensure you are representing good stock. Once you are set up you can then go and find the better deals to increase your profit margin.

I have one for about £1300 from last month in front of me that went to the Uk, a container to Dublin needs to go via Holland so I would estimate about €1700.

    Hello Larry,

    for shipment in September the cost from mainports China to Dublin would be as follows ;

    Oceanfreight Us$ 1300.00
    Terminal Handling € 150
    ISPS € 17.00
    Agency € 70.00
    Customs clearance € 60.00
    EHF/ Lo-Lo € 29.00
    Delivery Dublin € 195.00

NB : if you are a VAT registered importer I can structure your imports so that you can defer the VAT outlay on imports to your VAT return, i.s.o. paying it on arrival and then claiming it back to your periodic VAT return.

If you need any further assistance let me know

    Cheers,
    Rudolf289

can anyone give me a ballpark figure on how much it would cost to ship a 40 foot container(24 tonnes of timber) from estonia to dublin

What sort of additional charges would be on smaller containers, are they the same at Dublin port, or are they calculated on weight.

I,m considering importing a car lift from china, and I think its crated, and the dimensions are,

    Shipping Dimensions: 2900mm*970mm*450mm
Weight: 620kg (plus any packaging weight) .

I have been quoted $150 shipped to Dublin by the Chinese manufacturer.

I have read a lot of threads lately about importing from China. It sounds like a complete nightmare waiting to happen, for the uninitiated, me:D

So any advice on the best practices would be warmly welcomed. thanks

    Hello Kadman,

I would strongly recommend you check out rates for this shipment from Irish Freight Forwarders. You would need to tell them the point of origin in China. I take it your current supplier is offering C&F Dublin ? Ask him for an FOB (Chinese port of shipment) price.

If the supplier insists on arranging the shipping, ask him for the details of the agent in Dublin that will receive the goods. Ring them and ask them for the arrival charges for your shipment. They will be able to tell you what THEIR (!) charges will be, but they can not tell you what the Chinese agent will ask them to collect as a China Import Service Fee (search that term on Boards.ie for some horror stories - I mean Halloween is nearly upon us, but these would really scare you). Reason is the Chinese agent will only tell them AFTER your shipment has left and at that stage your committed.

    This is what your local charges should be on the basis of the details you advised above and if you organised the shipping from this end;

    Agency € 60.00
    Depot Handling/LCL Unpacking € 55.00
    Customs Clearance € 55.00

If you can tell me where the shipment in China is coming from I could give you a shipping cost aswell.

    Cheers,
    Rudolf289

I am trying all morning to prize the agents details in Ireland for this shipment, in order to ascertain any further charges this end.

Its like pulling teeth:D................and they aint budging.

Looks like RUDOLPH289 is 100% correct. I have sent a total of 6 e mails so far, and each reply has done everything to avoid parting with the info.

But I,ll keep going just for the hell of it:D

    Tbh - give it up.

I have personal experience of bringing 2 x 40ft containers from China - nightmare, and a complete waste of time.

For a lift, I'd rather pay more, to someone else, for a 'right' one. Our last one came from Italy (via dealer here). Simple, efficient, and the quality is infinately better.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Apologies for bumping the old thread

Last few weeks I spend getting a quotes on 20ft container from Ningbo China to Dublin.
The best quote I got so far is

1x20’ contr Ocean freight from Ningbo to Dublin EUR 1617.00
Shipping line Terminal handling charge EUR 120.00
Shipping line ISPS fee EUR 10.00
Shipping line Equipment handover fee EUR 53.00
Shipping line Bill of lading fee EUR 50.00
Delivery to Dublin address EUR 210.00 + vat (includes two hours freetime for unloading)
Customs clearance EUR 55.00 (up to 5 tariff headings)

I was quoted already over 2000 Euros only on the Freight and was wondering if this is normal ongoing rate those days .

    Cheers

    Hello Jarren,

It should be possible to achieve the rate you advise above (€ 1617.00) in Us$ with the arrival / delivery costs and clearance costs in line with what you have. That would be aprox 25% lower than what you are currently looking at. One caveat, the shipping lines are pushing for a peak season surcharge of Us$ 350.00 per 20' container / Us$ 700 per 40' container, but that is subject to confirmation later this week. Not sure if the lines will be able to implement that surcharge, and if so, to the level proposed.

One other aspect that may be of interest. If you are a VAT registered trader, you can structure your imports in such a way that instead of paying the VAT (23% over the cost of the product plus freight plus duty) on arrival, you can defer them to your VAT return. Assuming that the goods you import are indeed for your business, you would be able to re-claim the VAT paid on imports. Since in this case the VAT is deferred to your periodic VAT return you accrue a liability and at the same time claim the deductible. The result is an improvement in your cash flow.

Hope this helps in your quest to establish the best possible rate.

    Cheers,
    Rudolf289
