Probably not the best time for BBC to show a documentary about Eric Clapton.

Do you mean the Michael Richards moment he had?

On Mature recollection, did Michael Richards have an Eric Clapton moment?

    Indeed.

‘Rock Against Racism’ was formed solely on Clapton’s onstage comments.

    Timing, BBC, timing.

    Anyhoo...

    Penblwydd Hapus Tom Jones!

If you watch only one performance today of Tom and the Treorchy Male Voice Choir serenading Burt Bacharach with ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’ in Welsh, make it this one. :)

Ha, that is brilliant! Nice one WM.

I did a google and I found this nugget about the filming, the boyos were well on by the final take (from the book Tom Jones: Close Up)

Don’t know if you can get the new Sky Documentaries channel in Ireland, but the excellent Kurt Cobain doc ‘Montage Of Heck’ is on right now.

I'm sure it's been on before but I really enjoyed the Stones doing the whole of Sticky Fingers on Sky Arts. They discussed the songs in segments interspersed with the gig and it was interesting to hear them talk about some of the slower ones they rarely play live. Also nice humility from Ron Wood about Mick Taylor's long solo on Can't you hear me knocking - "I just play it the way he did, why would you mess with it" (though it would have been better if they'd brought Mick T on for the song). If you have Sky I recommend checking it out on catch-up.

If The Coronas are "Irish rockers", then it's no wonder that the Irish music scene is as f**ked as it is!!

Hello, big news this week is that BBC2 are showing all three of Francis Whately's excellent docs on Saturday night back to back in a four a half hour marathon. That sounds like one to free up some space on the tape for, maybe they could have split it over a few nights but sure it's good to see something decent on

Also this week new RTE thing about David Gray's White Ladder Album which is still the biggest selling album ever in Ireland, and MTV have a rare repeat of Nirvana Unplugged on one of their channels ...

BBC2 Bowie Night on Saturday !
9.15pm David Bowie: Finding Fame (the third one)
The final part of Francis Whately's trilogy of films on Bowie's life, telling the story of the five years when many of the ideas that would help him become an icon were first born. Starting in 1966, soon after David Jones changed his name to David Bowie, the film traces his interest in everything from Holst and Pinky and Perky to Anthony Newley and Tibetan Buddhism, and how he used all of these influences to create not only Ziggy Stardust, but the material for his entire career

10.45pm David Bowie: Five Years (the first one)
Documentary exploring five key years in the singer's career, which saw him redefine himself as an artist by adopting a different persona - each one marking a shift in musical direction. Featuring interviews with his collaborators, the programme focuses on 1971's ultimate glam-rock icon Ziggy Stardust, Bowie's reinvention as the impeccably dressed soul stylist the Thin White Duke in 1975, his regeneration in Berlin with the critically acclaimed 1977 album Heroes, 1980's Scary Monsters triumph and Let's Dance's global success in 1983

12.15am David Bowie: The Last Five Years (the second one)
A portrait of David Bowie, told by the people who knew him best - his friends and artistic collaborators. It also takes a detailed look at his last albums The Next Day and Blackstar, and his play Lazarus. Through the prism of this last work, the film shows how, in his final five years, Bowie not only began producing music again but returned to the core and defining themes of his career. Among the contributors are Tony Visconti, Gail Ann Dorsey, Toni Basil and Michael C Hall

    1.45am TOTP2 – David Bowie
Special edition of the archive hits programme dedicated to David Bowie, featuring performances from Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test as well as archive interviews

    The Rest:

    Wednesday
11.10pm Cobain – Montage Of Heck (Sky Documentaries)
Filmmaker Brett Morgen explores the Nirvana frontman's childhood, career and tragic death, using material from the Cobains' personal archives (This Sky Documentaries channel launched recently, not sure how widely available it is)

Documentary offering an insight into the former Police frontman through interviews with the singer, his family and other artists. (The actual blurb from Sky for this says … “through interviews with the singer, his family and artists including Will.i.am” which doesn’t inspire confidence)

    10pm Film Amy (2015) (Channel 4)
Documentary portrait of soul, jazz and R'n'B singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, whose untimely death in July 2011 followed a well-publicised history of drugs and alcohol abuse. Director Asif Kapadia traces Amy's rise and demise over the 13 years preceding her death, telling her story via her music and autobiographical song lyrics, video footage shot by friends and family, archive television clips, plus voiceover interviews with those who were personally and professionally close to her. Contributors include Pete Doherty, Mitch Winehouse, Tony Bennett, Mark Ronson and Tyler James

    10.15pm David Gray – Ireland’s Greatest Hit (RTE1) New!

    https://www.rte.ie/culture/2020/0529/1143391-new-david-gray-documentary-on-rte-revisits-white-ladder-at-20/

The story of Frankie Gavin, a founder of the great De Dannan and an ambassador for Irish music around the world.

    9.30pm & 2.15am The Beatles – Made On Merseyside (BBC4)
Few dispute that the Beatles defined 1960s music and popular culture like no other band, but how John, Paul, George and Ringo made the journey from Merseyside teenagers to international pop stars is less known. Director Alan Byron's documentary recounts the rise of the band as American rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues dragged post-war Liverpool into one of the most vibrant music cities ever with the Mersey Beat sound. Pete Best is in it, it’s on Youtube

    10pm Later … With Jools Holland (BBC2)

Actually like that Black Box song - it reminds me of a jukebox playing in amusement arcades and the great thrasher versus townies war of 1989. When I say townies I mean inner city kids that would have beaten the **** out of us.
