    Wow,

Had a listen back after reading the comments here. Another woeful display from Darcy..

Fair play to Shatter for keeping his cool during that, because he didn't have a minute. Having listened to it all, I got very little of any of the points that Shatter made.

Is that not the point of an interview? Bring him in and get some answers to some questions that everyone would like to hear?

His tone was terrible the whole way through. He uses this dismissive "yeah yeah and hmm hmm" while clearly not listening to the ministers response.

Shatter didn't give Darcy any reason to take the approach he did. I can understand an interviewer getting a bit persistent when they are getting absolutely nowhere after giving the interviewee time, but Darcy was just being ridiculous.

    One exchange went:

    Darcy: "Who makes that decision?"

    Shatter: "Firstly, ... "

Darcy: (interrupting) "Who makes that decision?"

    (repeated about 6 times)

Rude, uninformative, irritating to listen to and a waste of an opportunity to have half an hour with a minister.

Sums it up perfectly, he just attacks from the off. Shatter had him in his pocket

I was interested to see how ppl saw that interview, I was pleased that Ray was willing to get tough with Shatter ( sniggering childishlly Shatter teheee) especially after a soft start with his soft porn novel. I think Ray believes he is the people's champion in some very misguided way. Yet he is condescending at best. He has appalling interviewing skills and could really do with getting lessons. I mean its like an accountant not being able to balance the books or a radio DJ not being able to use the stations computer system ;) . Couldn't wait to get the dig in with mairead saying she had someone doing it for him .

OK, it's Friday so I'm going to be positive (I'm not a particular fan of Ray's and the "stop eject" thing does annoy me):

A friend of mine was in the studio a couple of months ago with Ray, Ray interviewed him about a geocaching charity event he was running.

Was chatting to him afterwards and asked him how Ray was, both on and off air, and he said Ray was a top guy, really genuine and easy interview. I was suitably surprised, but there you go!

I've met him a few times (although not for a few years now) and I have to say any time I met him he was really really sound, very polite and very humble. Good craic as well.

I used to absolutely LOVE his show, it was always so lighthearted and fun. I know as a broadcaster sometimes it's nice to get your teeth stuck into something a bit more serious than Fix it Friday or whatever, but then if that's what you want, move into a different kind of job. Or if you do want to mix both, then when you're doing the serious stuff, allow the person to have their say, even if it's not what you agree with. Shouting someone down is not good interviewing.

It's funny because in person he doesn't seem the type to be so stubborn and preachy, but it does come across that way on his show. As I said though, I do think he's a nice person overall.

I'm sure he's a nice guy and grand to have a chat with. The type of interview you talk about, he's good at (most of the time). He just has the chat with everyday people.

The problems come when he has a *celebrity or a "serious" interview like today where he just destroys it with his own preconceptions or these ridiculous crusades "for the people" ie. him putting himself across as the voice of the entire nation.

*this is basically any person who is remotely well known and not the average Joe. These can often be recognised by Ray questioning their height and how much money they earn.

Saying he should have lessons is like saying that Rory McIlroy should go and get a few lessons on how to hold a golf club. This guy is in the top commercial spot in radio, it's mad :pac::confused:

and if his listening numbers drop significantly, or there are major complaints to the broadcast ombudsman, then he may get the can. But chances are, if anything, his numbers will increase & advertising revenue will increase.

They'll probably inexplicably use that interview to advertise the show, like they did with the interview with healy-rae.

Exactly what I thought. They will cut and paste it to show him as a hard man in order to lure more listeners.

Shatter like all ministers can never give a straight answer. They go off on tangents refusing to answer tough questions directly.

"We can't legislate for fatal feotal abnormalities because it would require a referendum."

    Who calls a referendum FFS.

I was a bit just a little bit surprised at the "you're talking ****" comment. Ray was probably getting annoyed at Shatter ignoring his questions though.

I dip in and out of the show but I mostly hate it. I find Ray impossible to like, and I loved him on the den but god he's turned into a moan and a preacher. He's a pain in the Swiss roll, the fun is gone out of the show. I don't recognise the same man who dealt with Dustin and zig and zag, is like he's 90 years of age. And he needs to learn how to use his mixing desk. It's just not funny Any more, its incompetence.

"WHO MAKES THE DECISION?" repeat several times....A bully without a doubt! A total waste of what could have a good interview, Darcy came across as a complete planker, again. I think he thinks he Paxman. I have no time for Shatter, but how he did not kick darcy in the balls I will never know.

It's not that simple. The minister knows it would be very difficult to get an abortion referendum passed, they barely got the childrens rights referendum accepted.
The last abortion referendum was defeated by campaigns against by both pro-life and pro-choice groups because they viewed it as either too liberal or conservative. With the existence of such divergent views along with anti-government feelings how would they get any referendum passed?

Maybe the minster could have explained this if he was given a chance, see david mitchell's soapbox on this poor interviewing style http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZl7oCPcTqU

D'arcy's audience, if his texters are anything to go by(I listen in for a bit each day to bring up the blood pressure a bit) are worse than the lowest common denominator in that they think they something about politics, democracy and general current affairs when in fact they haven't a clue and the Ray D'arcy show is where they get their news.

What was the text reaction to his disgraceful treatment of the minister for justice? Any journalist knows that you need to treat your interviewee with a modicum of respect, lately D'arcy is completely ignoring this, I'm not sure if it started with Danny Healy Rae or if it was going on before that but someone needs to have a word with him in this respect.

Darcy lives in his constituency afaik. Probably not advisable to boot one of his constituents, no matter how rude. :D

That Shatter interview was one of the worst interviews I've ever heard. I can't stand Shatter but he came out of that interview sounding good.

Which is exactly why Ray should leave the political interviews to Matt Cooper.

A few weeks ago Ray proclaimed that we should know our limitations. I hope he heeds his own advice after listening back to that interview.

Only really noticed it the other day when i listened to the podcast with paul williams. Anytime he asked paul a question he answered it for him which i thought was unbelievably ignorant and when paul somehow managed to actually get his answer in he blatantly ignored his opinion. Im sorry but what a prick!

Along with his intro moan for 20 minutes, it's all a bit tiresome. I think the radio at work will have a accidental fall soon.

Nobody like Ray to cheer you up, next item will probably be lotto winners, "tactful" as ever.

Yesterday he was bitchin about "the whole modern thing" about tweetin and facebook etc and how "it's not acceptable"......wait till his own kids are 15, and out for dinner with him prattling on, with heads stuck in some device talking to mates and chewing the sleeves off their hoodies, see what he has to say then.

I don't believe it. They are playing a clip from Jenny Kelly's hen party.

Next week, a clip from Rays stag. Which should go along the lines of:

"Well lads. Did you see the rugby? Great game.

Ok lads, have one more bottle of beer now and a few crisps, its almost 10 o clock and I have to go to bed.

I've booked a taxi for the 4 of ye".

Texts have to be made up- the language/phrasing repeats alot.

Of course, people text what Ray wants to hear so it might be read out. The audience wouldn't be the brightest to be nice about it.

Are there that many emotional men in Ireland? The "I'm 6ft 9 trucker who is sobbing like a baby" texts are annoying.

Mairead has no personality and Jenny sounds like the most horrid individual...
