Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Lucy killed again this morning! Poor snowman in the park didn't stand a chance - mauled and eaten! :p

    Yum...

We had a good amount of buildup in our courtyard so Mr C was pretty excited to fox dive in the small drifts...Esmae with her fox like face and double coat was like ‘not a chance am I going out in that’ although she did try to catch the flakes if I held her up.

Piggies enjoyed the bit we got on the balcony as they run and burrow in it and then popcorn on to the heated snuggle pad.

we had a collie for years, and he was a pampered house pooch but he still slept on the tiles if there wasnt a bed where he wanted to be, ran around in the rain, wind and snow, despised his coat and tried to eat the towel if you tried to dry him.

My sisters gsp just wants to be cuddled and wrapped in blankets all day, she wont go out if its wet, she comes in and shivers till you dry her if its misty outside, she wanders round the house in her fleece pyjamas if its cold, she will go get her blanket and drag it to where she wants to be so she doesnt have to sit on the bare floor...

Is she an oddity or does anyone else have a pointer like her? I cant imagine she would survive if she had to actually work! :pac:

shes sounds like a real cutie!
Theres lots of failed gun dogs - gun shy - she sounds like a bit of a diva?!?
Theres an absolutely fabulous long haired pointer that walks by our house sometimes he was gun shy and was rehomed...

Has anyone called the dog warden to report a loose dog before? There's one on our road (a country road which people drive crazy speeds on!) and it's left out to just wander up and down, it wanders in and out of our garden and doesn't have much road sense.

It's a gorgeous dog, long haired collie, but I'm just getting sick of the amount of loose dogs around. I'm not sure which house owns it.

I could try and find the owner and approach them. But lets be honest, they know they live on a narrow country road, where 9 out of 10 cars are speeding at 70-80kmh, so they obviously don't see an issue.

Call the warden. The dog should be chipped per microchipping laws so all the warden should need to do is scan it. The dog could cause an accident and get both himself and some innocent person(s) killed because of it's owners letting it roam.

Do I need to call immediately when I see it? Or if I call and tell them when and where it usually is, will they just call out?

Yep we enjoyed it, we really only like to watch the activities not the judging. Both ours watched with no issues as it was on mute cause the barking frightened one & over excites Esmea. I especially loved the sheltie who didn't get too far and then the little chocolate pom who was excluded, but looked like he had soon much fun.

i'm doing some cavaletti training with Esmea as she loves constructive / task orientated play whereas Mr C just likes to do his own thing.

We've been thinking about getting another cat and were concerned that our existing cat Pangur wouldn't take kindly to a new face coming in on her territory. We noticed last night though a (hopefully not stray) cat hanging around outside the house and brought Pangur up to the window to meet him/her. She seemed slightly interested in the strange cat but didn't hiss or get her hackles up at all so we're very encouraged. Yay new kitty for the house!

On the other hand, I was slightly concerned to see the strange cat still hanging around the estate this morning. Darting under cars and being very inquisitive. No collar but looks well fed and clean. How am I supposed to know if he/she is a stray or just someone's outdoor cat? How long do I leave it before trying to catch him/her and take them to a vet to check? My husband thinks he's seen this cat before in the estate so maybe it is just someone's outdoor cat who is roaming a bit further than normal?

The cat is clearly cared for so not an issue. Mine roam free and are fine. I once had a cat appropriated by a neighbour who thought as you are doing! There are no laws re collars etc for cats. he is just doing what well cared for cats do so please do not worry.

Yesterday evening I came home to find a young black cat looking in my window, it half ran away but I kneeled down to call it over. The noise out of it, think bengal howling, the neighbours ran outside thinking something was injured. But it was extremely friendly crawling into my lap while meowing constantly, I had a job getting back in my door without it running in. Never seen it before now in the estate but it hung outside my house occasionally howling in at my window all evening/ into the night. Felt awful for it but don't know if it's a neighbour's cat or its lost. Looks healthy but it was a wild night to be out in, didn't look like it's was used to being outdoors.

I left a dpd crate with a blanket on the porch because it was an awful night and it was soaked wet but didn't feed it. This morning my dpd crate and blanket are gone, presuming either dpd or someone else lifted it? Got a damaged zooplus delivery in it a few weeks ago. Would dpd just pick it back up again if they were passing?

So I took Esmae up to Phoenix Park this morning to play recall fetch, do some loose leash training and was visibly doing so. Esmae was harnessed and attached to a 25ft training lead attached to me, she was mastering bringing her toy back to me and we where having so much fun!

Along comes some little white fluffy Maltese x and I shouted to the owners who were no where to be seen to call back their designer pooch... did they NO!

So I threw some training treats at the dog and moved elsewhere, then the little sh*te bulldozed over again and tried to ‘play’ with Esmae, she was so freaked out she jumped into my arms and I had to leash their dog, pegged a Garda car nearby and took it over to them and the abuse I got off the owners for doing that was something to behold.

I’ve never been in that situation before and it left me shaken and praying that Esmae will not become reactive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,053 ✭✭✭✭tk123

    ^
I think how you react affects how the dog will react - and to what level depends on the dog. We had somebody basically flip out in our house (I wasn't there to get the dogs away) and the dogs were very frightened and bolted :( Even now a few years later Lucy is very very sensitive if you so much as tut let alone raise your voice - OMG if my mam is watching something like the Cube the dogs are both staring at her with concern the whole time from her gasping lol :o My friend is always giving out to her dog for digging, not coming to her etc etc (not in a cruel way) but Lucy just stares at her like what's wrong with her/why is she angry?! Same friend would be quite protective of her dog and it's made the dog a bit reactive in that she's reacting to her owner's fear (imo). Same with the dogs if there's an accident and they get injured she panics where I kind of take a step back and try to remain calm and in control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,291 ✭✭✭em_cat

I totally agree about trying to be calm, unfortunately by my nature I’m high strung & being noticeably disabled hasn’t helped that.

I do find it very hard in those situations & since my accident a couple of years ago, I often feel pretty vunerable. I was just p’d off cause it kept coming over and then it jumped on Esmae.

It wasn’t aggressive or bully, probably just wanted to play or knew I had treats.

Today Mr C slipped his harness & after a full 45 mins of ignoring me, running full pelt, running up to other dog walkers. I was petrified & mortified but all I could do was sit down becuse I couldn’t do anything. A lovely lady with a couple of beagles helped to tire him out & eventually he collapsed next to us. Esmae just stayed with me of her own accord and did some ‘gardening’.

I know Mr C needs to be able to run and I’d love for him to do it off lead but his hips & knees are in such a bad state that it is difficult to balance it. We do heaps of enrichment stuff everyday but nothing beats a good pelt run.

I've just read in the Irish Times that a noted "rescue" in the South West is to be closed down with "Revenue raising serious concerns" over €150k in cash payments. I'm not going to link the article as it mentions the "rescue" by name, but it's the one that everybody knows and talks about and had an "army" of cult followers:rolleyes:

Shes also just decided that she doesnt like the really expensive wet food that Ive just stocked up on :mad:
Today outside the back door, saw a cold/cooked brussels sprout that I dropped on the way to the hens - and there she (fussy cat) was, munching the bloody sprout! What the heck is that about?!?!?

In the gloaming last evening, as I was letting my younger cats out, I did a double take as I realised there were three small black shapes and I have only 2... then saw small white patches where neither of mine have white patches... new cat froze as they do then we stared at each other and he went fast into the shed clearly knowing ihis way round.. NB this was not stinkertom who haunts the place...

This being an island of course, strays are not an issue . I gathered ( did not ask details, thank you) that there was a situation re cats not too long ago but they sorted it, and i was quizzed to make sure mine were "fixed" as I crossed with them the first time.

Emerged that stinkertom's owner refused.. nasty tom cat it is..

Found out only recently that my neighbour did not bother to get his tom fixed as there were no females left!

either the strange cat is his or we got problems!

are there many cats on your island?
    and dogs?
presumably you dont have an issue being an island, with ferals or strays?

I was interested to read that there is a new invasive species of Shrew in Co. Kildare now - Greater White Toothed Shrew -

Do you have a lot of rats/mice/squirrels on your Island? Is your island ferry or bridge accessed?

For cats; mine and two others have one each. both entire toms!
everyone knows my cats now as they follow me when I walk. all five of them!

Dogs are working collies and few. My neighbour here has a beautiful blue merle collie with silver eyes . There are maybe a couple of pets at the other end

No, no ferals or strays; they sorted that out a while ago. Islands can be bad for overpopulation of cats when folk to not spay and neuter. and the resulting cats are inbred and puny

On another island a lady came home to tackle that

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/features/humaninterest/the-cat-woman-of-cape-clear-comes-home-223046.html

a few other web sites on her. she died after a year at home

Rats we have. This place had been empty years and since i came my cats have worked hard and well. one of the dead rats they brought me was the size of a half grown cat... No native trees as the winds are too fierce, no rabbits as the ground is pure rock and they cannot burrow, but a healthy hare population.. and we are a true island ...ferry only and frequently cut off which I love

oh a fox has been seen.

a bird paradise of course. I love it! and my cats are safe here which means a lot

    I am crying laughing!

I'm starting to try and shape weave poles (2x2 Susan Garrett method in case anyone is wondering) and my GSDx was trying different things that might be right (weaving through my legs etc) when she decided just to grab one of the weave poles and wrench it out of the ground to give it to me. I'm not sure my hysterical giggles persuaded her that she was entirely wrong... :D

Haha I love this! We had something similar recently, was trying a bit of nose work with one of mine. Had a treat hidden under a cone(idea was to sniff it out and indicate which one it was under) but we've done so much targeting that he came over sat in front of the cones batted each one over with his paw, found the treat and swiftly gobbled it up! Was trying to set it up again, hadn't even put anything under them and he knocked them all over again! So now it's back to the drawing board

Was it your terrier that knocked over the cones? I have a puzzle feeder that the others will use and it's great. My terrier lifts the entire thing up, dumps it upside down and just eats all the food...

Depends on the puzzle feeders in ours...Mr C noses & paws the wobbler. Walks & licks the kong while Esmae lies down & tries to pick hers up while on her back. She also likes the gyro thing as she takes it to her bed and paws it like a cat...

I have an 8 year old king Charles who is completely gone off food at the mo. Dropped a kilo in the last month. Allergic to beef, chicken, turkey and lamb. Any idea what food to give her. We were boiling plain white fish for a while, but she seems bored of that now too. Originally had her on pd duck and rice. But I think it's too hard for her to digest now.

Have you had her checked at the vet?
    Not eating at all?
If shes ALLERGIC to beef, chicken, turkey and lamb, thats a tricky one - what are the symptoms of her allergy?

If you have had her checked at the vet, and she is indeed allergic to all these meats, you will have to find an alternative diet - in the meantime have you tried her with eggs - scrambled are good, add a bit of cheese. Tinned fish is quite tasty - and good too - sardines, salmon, you could boil some brown rice, and mix in a tin of fish, add some finely chopped veggies etc.

Planning waaaay ahead.. airbnb booked for halloween night. It's just too stressful and exhausting for everyone - both dogs and humans!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

Guys looking for some advice on what I can post here please.

15 years ago on mother's day I bought my mother a westie

He was put to sleep yesterday having been her best friend for 15 years

Anyway she's heartbroken. I believe a dog is a great companion.

I'd like to get her a dog in a little bit, but she wouldn't be able for a pup as she is elderly

Ideally I'd get her a placid dog between 4 and 7 years old

I don't want to open a can of worms, but she won't want or be able for a dog with a lot of baggage so nothing with a child free alert on it, or single dog home, even though it would be a single dog home

A couple of years ago my friends mam took in a little dog who's owner became sick and couldn't look after him.

He'd some adjusting to do but went from one good home to another. That's the type of situation that would suit the dog and owner best here.

Can I post asking to see how to find such a dog here ? Or look for advice.

I have looked on <snip>. There was one suitable dog but he was reserved.

We seriously considered doing the same, but given we have them going for 6-7 weeks before and after :( I can’t see us being able to go away for that long.

How did Baily do with the mutt muffs?

Same here. I'm sure last year they started in August :( and it was awful the closer it got to Halloween but I wasn't prepared for how bad it was on the 31st! One thing that went off was 20-30 bangs in a row and he was so afraid! And then they were going off well into the night and I had to keep getting up to him.

The muffs were no use on Halloween but worked wonders on New Years when I secured them with vet wrap... But I wouldn't risk it for Halloween. OMG the thought of it :( not being able to get him out for an evening walk for months and him afraid to even go out to the loo!

You might be better posting in a separate thread, but if you get contacting rescues there'll be an abundance of that type of dog. The smallies go quicker, as do certain breeds, but if you're flexible as to the breed of dog and stick to specific qualities, you'll have an influx of options.

P.S. We can't name specific rescues on thread so ask for PMs if you start a new thread. :)

We’ve been trying to increase mr c’s tolerance to them but like last year they are probably going to be louder & longer than last year. Same here, got some vet wrap too for mr c’s and that worked better to secure them and worked well for New Years, we still have to use Sileo though as he is so terrified of them.

I know what you mean, once last year he had a very upset tummy because of the stress and ran out to go & a barrage of them went off so he had issues pooping outside for a while.

We’ve been trying to increase mr c’s tolerance to them but like last year they are probably going to be louder & longer than last year. Same here, got some vet wrap too for mr c’s and that worked better to secure them and worked well for New Years, we still have to use Sileo though as he is so terrified of them.

I know what you mean, once last year he had a very upset tummy because of the stress and ran out to go & a barrage of them went off so he had issues pooping outside for a while.

my old collie was like that; thunder and those dratted crowbangers

It is cold here today but three of my cats have it sorted.

They are together atop my bed. The oldest of my cats has his head neatly tucked between the heads of two younger..... hotheads.

    neat...

Am just back in from a quick walk as there's dark clouds rolling in. Had both dogs with me, one either side. As we passed a group of teenage boys one of them bent down to rub Bella, didn't ask or hesitate just seemed to think it was perfectly acceptable to do. He had a gear bag on which slid around his shoulder and frightened the crap out of her so she jumped and backed away. The rest of the group thought her reaction was hilarious so began kicking stones and stamping feet to try and scare her again. Thankfully she can shake things off pretty quickly and they didn't get their wanted reaction but I'm so flipping annoyed. Absolute idiots!!!

That's awful. You really would wonder what goes through people's heads!

Milo just had some round mince and mashed potato. I'm making cottage pie. He's a happy dog :D

I had similar last year passing the shop on our road ..some guy approached and towered over Bailey going to pet him and freaked him out so he strarted to bark.. rather than back off the guy started waving his arms / dancing bending over B ... Kids were howling with laughter and I couldn’t get past as their bikes were all on the ground and there was parked cars around so we were kind of trapped.. Kept asking the guy to back off as he was freaking B out and well I ended up being less polite and he stepped aside. Since then Lucy does like to pass the shop if there’s a crowd outside :(

Poor Bailey. Thankfully my other lad was well away from them, on the other side of me, we've been doing so well lately I wouldn't want something like that to set him back. Fair play to you for standing up for your puppers!

That stinks Bells, we’ve a heap of drug dealing types here and funny enough they are the ones who stand up for Mr C when the little scrotes stamp and fling about trying to get a rise out of him.

I've been sleep deprived lately, largely because I've had a cluster headache for 48 hours so I haven't been getting proper deep sleep...

...I had a dream last night I made a post where I was trying to incite violence on Boards. I remember in the dream thinking "jeez... my response was a bit intense, why did I do that?" Haha. Hopefully I get to sleep tonight.

Also, I need to try and figure out which one of my 7 animals has started peeing in the shower.

Can't stop laughing at the thought of one of them climbing in the shower to pee - mine avoid any hint of a bath at all costs!
