Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

yeah i always try to commit five hate crimes before breakfast

It was neither a reference to you specifically, nor a reference to anyone on here actively committing, or even condoning, hate crimes.

We can never lose sight of the fact that humans are deeply deeply flawed creatures. Young teenage boys are on a different spectrum. Their brains are in a zone somewhere between Fraggle Rock and Hulk Hogan.

They do stupid stuff all the time, to everyone including their own. It's hard not to for that girl, but I wouldn't look into it too much. It would probably have been the person after you just as easily.

It was in actual main Street is actually where this woman was attacked. So I doubt that.

What is interesting about these threads is that right and left swap. The lock em up and throw away the key are, if the crime is a hate crime, are in the left. Otherwise the right.

I personally feel we can’t have a functioning multi cultural society without a tougher application of the laws regarding the anti social classes, but chance would be a fine thing.

The way people are so eager to show how tough and edgy they are here is quite something to behold.

A lot of the 'tough and edgy' people on the internet are afraid of the public.

I would personally describe this as a hate crime.

    The definition is
A crime, typically one involving violence, that is motivated by prejudice on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, or other grounds.

Sounds pretty much like a hate crime to me.
Horrible thing for the poor woman to have to deal with.

After hours can be a cesspit at times tbh. Hopefully the woman involved or any of her friends and relations don't end up reading some of the guff posted.

I'm not a dwarf but I am quite small and I've had someone pick me up and literally throw me to his friend across a table of drinks, they thought it was hilarious but it frightened me and has never left me. Now I'm anxious in some situations when I never was before. I hope she's okay and her message is heeded by the people she talks to, it's a worthwhile endeavour.

I met Sinead a couple of years ago and she spoke about that same thing happening to her. Drunk men picking her up and passing her around. Total strangers doing it for a laugh. She also mentioned because she is often crotch height drunken idiots have unzipped and exposed themselves to her face. She spoke of standing on a quiet street, minding her own business and a car load of lads pulling over to take photos, point and laugh.

She told us about some everyday struggles like not being able to lock the door on public toilets so needing to ask strangers to hold it for her and then not being able to reach the sinks to wash her hands. Simple stuff we take for granted.

She's an interesting, intelligent, extremely witty and accomplished woman but just the responses on this thread sum up what she has to put up with on a regular basis.

She said something that really hit me.. I wish I could remember her words exactly but I think it was something like this...

"I live in a world that was built for you. Not for me."

    I think that's very sad.

Doubtful those little gurrier $hitrats who assaulted her won't to be "strongly surviving" anywhere in a few years. They more than likely be heading straight from the crack den to the ditch, maybe a graveyard if they can swing it.

I can only imagine the sh1t she has to put up with on a weekly or even daily basis.

I'd be pretty well pissed off with a large section of society, from the leap frogging gobshytes, to people pointing, staring and laughing behind their sleeves to "well meaning" people getting it hopelessly wrong.

This is a hate crime. More than alot that are deemed as hate crime, this is definitely one. The poor woman demeaned like that, with the fear that she will become a victim of a viral sensation.

Her job is to display how to maintain confidence on the obstacles she faces each day, then this happens her? Then this thread is made to downplay the whole thing?

In the space of 10 minutes in after hours I am thinking the same thing. Free speech is overrated.

    interesting.

i guess the crux of the issue is whether the motivation of the perpetrator or how the victim feels determines how the crime is designated.

She said it was an unpleasant experience which you know full well it was. Otherwise, you don't know her - she could be a lot tougher and more resilient than many of the edgelords here (and I suspect is).

Some of ye need to grow out of the "trying to look cool" phase. Obviously "I've had someone pick me up and literally throw me to his friend across a table of drinks" is a sh1tty thing to do, and those who'd downplay it are just being woefully disingenuous, and using anything as an excuse to use their favourite inane term (which they're addicted to using): snowflake, which is now even being used in relation to when people have a genuine grievance - not just when they are being offended over nothing.

It's really weird to see all these people doing their best to come off as the least empathetic, the least civilized, the most lacking in basic human civility.

It's not hard to be an asshole, it's kind of the default state. Maybe when you've absolutely nothing to be proud of, you end up scrabbling around for anything which distinguishes you?

Stuff they type here under a pseudonym, which they wouldn't dream of saying to a person face to face.

I don't know if this is a hate crime but objectively it was a sh1t thing to do to someone who couldn't defend themselves and people are going to all sorts of lengths to downplay it. That's what people are talking about.

Personally mild jokes wouldn't bother me, but "It was nothing - she needs to stop being a snowflake" is no better than getting offended by tiny things.

Yeah but loik, not according to Oirish law or anything. Therefore not real hate despite clear prejudice and a clearly hateful despicable act.

I sometimes wonder what goes on in people's heads. Leapfrogging anybody is a dickhead crime. Leapfrogging based on height, easy inroads to a hate crime don't get why people don't see it but people are clearly much cooler than us oldies now.

hate crime is such a buzz word these days and social media has just made things worse these days, I guess anyone that got called a name or bullied for any reason in school was also a "victim" of hate crimes, and our ancestors who where under the iron fist of Britain should be looking for reparations because we are all victims, got to collect those expensive victim points when we might gain something from it, right?

The thing is stuff like that happens to everyone, does not make it right but there should be no protected classes in a fair society, using the term 'Hate crime' is hyperbolic and invokes images of the Nazis from WW2 and not someone getting bullied by idiots in modern day Ireland, Parents are the issue, not disciplining their kids and teaching them to respect others. Most of these incidents come from someone seeing an easy target and less because of actual deep hatred, get the guards involved if you must or just brush it off and hope the perpetrator picks on the wrong person and gets whats coming to them as most of us would.

It doesn't happen to everyone though, or the same amount between those whom it does happen to. I don't get why there's such defensiveness when this topic comes up. I mean, "I get the piss taken out of me for having red hair" or "I get mocked because I'm a culchie" as if that's the same as what people with dwarfism have to deal with. It's most self absorbed - and it's rich telling this woman what she should think when never ever having to deal with the same thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,550 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

It’s not a ‘ hate crime ‘ imo . It’s like most assaults , pick on the more vulnerable. I’ve been on the end of a couple and it was more , IMO, to do with being a soft target by either being drunk or having a tough time walking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,783 ✭✭✭✭looksee

I cannot see any evidence that Sinead Burke used the term 'hate crime' and in fact the tone of what she said in the rest of the article does not suggest that she would have used that term.

It may be valid to discuss what is meant by 'hate crime' and whether journalism that uses that phrase is more interested in sensationalising than reporting. It is unkind to hang the discussion on a particular individual though. There is no reason why a particular person - especially one who is Irish and therefore quite likely to be reading this thread - should be singled out for mockery and pathetic, juvenile jokes in a thread that pretends to be discussing the appropriateness of journalistic language.

This thread is an example of how bottom of the barrel boards has become. Woman is assaulted and laughed at, and everyone makes snide digs and laughs at her.

Yet, if it were travellers that did it there'd be uproar. Forum is becoming a parody of itself.

Hold on, this isn't true. Not everyone is making snide digs and laughing at her at all. Several people are defending her and calling out those making the digs.

And travellers get slated here (many of them with good cause).

It’s not a hate crime, no hatred was shown towards her, nobody tried to incite hatred. Two young fellas had a laugh at her expense alright, but that was it. Had they touched her, verbally abused her etc., then you’d have a point.

One of them was banking on being able to jump cleanly over her which easily might not have worked out. Think what would have happened then.

You may be right on that, its up for discussion.

What should not be up for discussion is this person's distress, her size or appearance or anything about her, especially considering we have no idea whether she said it was a hate crime or whether this was a description wished onto her by a journalist.

Forums about the place are generally fine. DIY area is good, Motors is useful albeit very cliquey, learned a lot in the photography forum, etc. but the kinda stuff you see in this thread, which are direct jokes about a specific named person in the article, is really sad to see.

I'm as far as snowflake as you can find, but this behaviour is dragging the end of the barrel, this poor woman was targeted as an object of "fun" for a couple of young knuckle draggers...why, because they saw her as vulnerable,a soft target.... which one of them recorded for prosperity, to be sent onwards to friends ,social media where ever he wanted....and let us not forget, that crap is permanent😬 Although this is the After Hours forum and by most posters, not to be taken too seriously......
Where the fcuk does it stop.....where do we pause and say, nope this behavior isn't acceptable to me......
Is it by definition a "hate crime" .....to me personally no it's not,is it despicable behavior by a couple of scumbags........absolutely!!!
For anyone who finds it an amusing story or posting quick witted retorts......just imagine it was your sister or your niece that it happened to.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,974 ✭✭✭Chris_Heilong

If anyone sees behavior that insults the victim here then report it to a mod. The parts I discussed were to do with the nature of 'Hate crime' and I think many have commented on the same but I would have no time for people insulting someone else.
