The original building on the site was constructed by the Redmond family in 1350... The Loftus family obtained the property in (wait for it) 1666
However the version of the building that stands today was built between 1880& 1881.

    The Ghost Story

Charles Tottenham and his family came to live in the mansion in the middle of the 18th century. According to Rick Whelan's film version of the story, the date was July 1762.

The story of the house is that one cold, rainy night the family of the house were sitting in the parlour playing card games. During the game they heard a knock on the front door. A man on horseback was at the door and asked them if he could stay the night in their house because of the bad weather outside. He was invited in to play cards with the family and preceded to do so. It is said that during the game, one of the daughters of the family (who was about 18 at the time) dropped a card under the table. As she bent down to pick it up she saw the man's feet, which apparently resembled hooves.

It is said that the girl screamed and the man went up through the roof in a puff of smoke, leaving behind a large hole. A rumour states that the hole could never be properly repaired, and even to this day, there is still a certain part of the ceiling which is slightly different then the rest. The family called on Father Thomas Broaders (a Catholic priest) to exorcise the house. Fr. Broaders later became parish priest of the surrounding area.

Father Broaders' gravestone exists today and on it is written, "Here lies the body of Thomas Broaders, who did good and prayed for all, and who banished the devil from Loftus Hall".

Its arguably one of the most eerie places I have ever visited (which include Auchwitz and the Wallachia & Transylvanian regions of Romania (where Vlad III aka Dracula had reigned in the 15th Cnt).

The last time I was in the area, my father & I decided we would take a nosey around the building as it has always fascinated us... we walked up along the adjacent field and climbed over a small wall that led to the courtyard to the front of the mansion. The windows all had timber shutters on the inside but several had slight openings in them. Around the back there is a dilapidated caravan (possibly there for the past decade or two), but one of the most striking things about it was the view over the beach and the channel between hook and Dunmore. (****ing picturesque )

we heard viscous barking from dogs we could swear were within close distance... this barking grew louder and fearing we were about to be attacked we decided to run, at this point it seemed like the barking was just feet away but yet there was no sight of any dogs... quite freaked out we made it back to the road where we had the car parked, we were then approached by a middle aged lady in a car who claimed to be the owner of the property and threatened to call the guards, accusing us of smashing windows :D and damaging the place, my father (54) then apologised for trespassing saying we had no knowledge of anyone living there... to which she replied "well that’s the sad part about it, there is"

About a year later my cousin was telling me that him and sum m8's had went down there 1 evening.... without mentioning my experience of the place he went on to speak of the abandoned caravan and "some dogs were running at us but couldn’t see them".... that fact alone freaks me out

This is not the real ghost story. This is the generic urban legend that has grown up around the hall. One point of fact: the hall as it stood in the days of Anne Tottenham has long since been 100% demolished and then rebuilt. So obviously there is no original roof to be repaired!

There is an interesting story however attached to it - or rather, there is a rather conventional ghost story (in which Anne Tottenham's ghost was said to have haunted the Tapestry Room for decades) backed up by some compelling eyewitness testimony in the 19th century.

Go digging and you shall find...

That house gives me the sh!ts, my father called there a few times on buisness, he works all around the southeast. He says there is an old woman living there.

i was there last week (outside) she stays for about 2 weeks every year but has not come over for 2 years, she is in a nursing home in the UK and has refused to sell the place to hotel people etc. it has been in her family for so long, she has stated that she has papers indicating that she owns the cliffs behind the house too.

My imaginary friend was there last September.. He said it was an absolutely amazing building, every window boarded up - but you can see in the keyhole of one door - incredible, all the original furniture is inside. You can get into the ugly modern extension out to the side if you're arsed, but there's nothing of interest in there.
There's no way there's been somebody living there recently though. Keep in mind that somebody is watching the place the whole time, and chances are you'll find yourself pegging it across a field.
Just like my imaginary friend had to.

Ive noticed the locals down there are very protective of the place, mainly because of imaginary friends and nosey parkers doing a bit of poking about ;)

Mmm. From what i remember from the RTE drama, the hall is supposedly haunted by Anne Tottenham. There are two different versions of events. The handsome stranger (or the devil) and Anne fell in love and had an affair. One versions says that annes father challenged the stranger to a duel and anne witnessed her father killing her lover and went insane. The other version is that the stranger got Anne pregnant and did a runner. Anne had the baby but her family took the child off her following her birth and killed it causing her to go mad. The latter version of events is supported by the finding of a newborns remains in one of the walls during renovations to the house. The upshot of both is that Anne shamed her family so much that they locked her away in a small room. The room was so small that she could not stand up and was permanantly crouched in a corner causing her knee joints to become permanantly locked. When she died no one was sure wheather she was interred in the family vault or put in a separate unmarked grave. Sometime in the 19th centuary, vandals damaged the Tottenham family vault. During repairs, workemen reported seeing a strange coffin in the vault, one in which the top/the lid sloped up much like the roof of a house. This was thought to be Annes coffin, as (sorry to be gross) after years of being in the one position, her legs cou;d not be straightened.

A friend i know and her boyfriend went up there an a dare. They couldnt get in to the grounds as the gates were shut. Apparantly the whole place had a very nasty vibe. Just as they were about to leave, my friend turned back for one last look at the place. She said in one of the upstairs windows she saw the figure of a woman in period costume from the 18th centuary. Her head was at a really awkward angle like her neck was broken and her forearms were swinging limply like a marionette. It was just for a split second, but she found the image really disturbing.

So far as i know, at least what i was told by people, was that one of my family was involved in an affair in Loftus Hall, i was told that it was the same person that is the center of the story with the woman but i doubt that. My family name is Laffan and i do know that we had built a tower near Loftus Hall. But i would presume that it was a separate incident and not the affair that is one of the main points of some of the stories as has been claimed to me. If anyone can verify or disprove what i was told, i'd like to hear either way.

The Devil story is a lot similar to one told about a place near to me , Castletown house. I wonder does it get told about a lot of places?

Was there this weekend, i have a holiday house near here. With regards to people nt talking about it in the Hook light house was because there was supposed to be a joint advertising campaign between both parties. Whoever was dealing with Loftus hall got mad because it was only being advertised as a haunted house .

they are trying to get rid of this stigma as its going to be re-opened again but i am not sure for what . The hook light house would be sued if they talk about it being haunted. Aparrently !

Just Last week me and a few friends thought that it would be a good idea to go into loftus hall and have a look around. We came through fields as if you go up the drive, you have to pass the owners house who is an alcoholic and he comes up to the house with a gun and shoots (so i Hear) We broke down one of the boarded windows and went all over the house even to the top floor. We did hear weird sounds but as there was a few of us we were ok. We found items suck as old reading glasses, full bottles of beer wine and other drinks. We traveled into all the bedroom where we found old new papers from 1994. there are old cabinates full of silver teapots etc. There are loads of dead birds aswell. I was so sososososo suprized when we found two grand pianos!! Its such a waste the amount of stuff left there to rott! And the guy that owns it wont sell it or do it up!
It was said that durin a game of cards some one dropped a card, when she bent down to pick it up she noticed that the man sitting across from her had hoofs instead of feet! he then shot through thte roof and left a big hole! there is still a hole in it today............

It is such an amazing structure, especially approaching it on a autumn/winters afternoon, eerie is all I can say.

Remember talking about this whilst working at sea, and some off the sailors I worked with whom come from that area, all had the same stories which were mentioned here and some other unusual hearings and sightings were said.

It was great conversation, as it's still today.

Here is an article from 'The Carlow Nationalist'

"The ghost stories associated with Loftus Hall

IT was a couple of factors that set me thinking of Loftus Hall and the ghost stories attached to it. The first one was when looking up a map of the local area and the big estates which met in the parish some years ago. The estates in question were the estates of Butler, Fitzwilliam and Tottenham, and it was the name of the last estate that reminded me of Ann Tottenham and her haunting of Loftus Hall. Loftus Hall is situated on the Hook peninsula in south county Wexford. and is even today a lonely enough place. Let us try to think what it was like in olden times when there was no electric light, very few people passing or visiting the hall, with the sound of the moaning wind sweeping about the house on a winter night. The stories of the haunting of the hall are many but the main story concerns the appearance of the once beautiful Ann Tottenham.

This mansion, built on the wind swept Hook peninsula, came into the possession of the Loftus about 1601. Ann was the daughter of Charles Tottenham who had made a name for himself when he rode to Dublin and entered the House of Parliment in his mud spattered boots and clothes to record what proved to be the casting vote against a measure that would have put the Irish Treasury thousands of pounds in debt. He was married twice and by his first marriage he had two daughters, Ann and Elizabeth. Elizabeth married and after some time Charles married again, and is second wife and daughter Ann continued to live at Loftus hall.

Ann soon found that her stepmother was anything but kind to her and eventually forbade her to have the few friends she had visiting the hall. This meant that what was now a very beautiful young woman lived a very lonely existence.

It is a well known fact that the south Wexford coast is one of the most dangerous stretches of water around the Irish coast and as a result many a ship ended her sailing days either grounded on the shore or shattered on the rocks near the coast. Sometimes members of the crew reached the shore and sought shelter in the houses near where they struck. Sometimes they moved inland and were given shelter from the storm until the weather improved. This also applied to travellers on their way to the coast.

Now whiter the man involved with Ann in our story was coming from the sea or not we will never know, but on a stormy winter night there came a loud kicking at the door of Loftus hall and when the door was opened a stranger stood there and asked for shelter. He was invited in and at breakfast the next morning proved to be so interesting a person that he was asked to stay and rest for a few days. This he agreed to do and during his stay he fell in love with Ann and she with him. The story goes that he asked Tottenham for her hand in marriage and was refused. He was asked to leave, which he did and Ann never saw him again.

This is where there are two versions of the cause for Ann’s break down in her state of health. Some say that she felt so heart broken over loving her lover that she lost all interest in living and eventually lost her reason and was confined to the Tapestry Room until she died. After her death her spirit haunted the hall and appeared almost every night. The local parish priest was eventually sent for and is supposed to have confined her wandering apparition to the tapestry room.

The second version of the story is that after her lover leaving Ann discovered that she was pregnant and when she told her father he flew into a rage and had her confined to the tapestry room when visitors came to the house. The story goes on that she died on the birth of her baby after her father had refused to allow a doctor to see her. Some time after her death strange stories began to be told about the house. When guests came some of the party would be put in the tapestry room to sleep. They would be awakened by a weight pressing on them, or the clothes would be pulled from the bed, or they would hear the sound of a dress sweeping the floor. Many guests left in a hurry.

On one occasion the people in the house were awakened by the cries of a servant who was sleeping in the room. When they got him to tell them what happened he told them that he had awoke to see a woman in white with a fierce expression on her face standing beside his bed. When he started to call out she disappeared into a closet at the end of the room, or her coming down the stairs and of her appearing in other parts of the house. Although there are other stories told of strange happenings and sights at Loftus hall, one or two even state that the devil himself appeared in different forms at different times, this is the main story.

The ghost of Ann was seen around the hall for several years until about 1668 when the Tapestry room was turned into a billiard room and the closet at the end of the room demolished. A lot of rebuilding has been carried out since then and different people have used the hall including nuns at one stage. Still the stories go on, perhaps it would take from the place if Ann left it. Still is she is still there, may the day come when she shall rest in peace. "

Just passed by this place today on my way to see the lighthouse.

All I can say is that you are struck by it's ill fitting and foreboding towering presence in another wise rural flat area. We drove passed it for about a a half kilometre and I was literally struck by its severe dominance over the landscape.

Boarding it up like that does no favours to its demeanor.

Heya, I was in the bar some years back, when it was still being lived in. the owners were struggling to make ends meet, as very few people stayed in it. Even though, as someone from Wexford, I am fascinated by the story, but I did not find it creepy whatsoever. I think I must have been about 15/16 at the time, so is 15 years since I was in it. I must ask my parents, as they knew the owners

the owners name is deveraux,,,they are a big family and and have pubs in kilkenny and carlow...they are not intrested at the moment,,,but they have big plans for it .its not gonna be knocked down but they have said they are doing some big upgrades to the building.

i wouldnt go up on a practical basis
my cousin about 4 years ago, an amateur filmaker, pushed his way in through an old door, said it was like the shining, eerily quiet, expect wllpaper peeling from floors, dirt cold and grime everywhere- as if it was suddenly abandoned years ago,
but within minutes the police arrived! he was lucky not to be arrested, the police know people are attracted to the place!
to conclude he said nothing paranormal happened, but it was mid summer- did say it was v creepy
he was trespassing and he knew it!

There are reports of people experiecing activity in Duncannon and none for Loftus .... what would that lead you to think?

well given that loftus hall is built on the site of the orginal hall..i would have thought that there would some negative vibes......then again i have never been to loftus so i cannot be sure. i have however been to duncannon fort, and while i found it to be a fine historic building....i didnt feel any negativity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Ok so subjectively speaking you have never had feelings in either place and yet would presume Loftus might be haunted and Duncannon would not be?

Yet there are reports from Duncannon and none from Loftus?

If we are going to label places as being haunted then should we make that judgement based on where looks spookier or has a violent history or base it on reported experiences?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Now dont get me wrong I'm not saying either is or is not haunted. I'd make a judgement for myself on my own personal experiences but I would take on board what others have experienced.

Nothing I've heard, other than the generic devil stuff.

That said people dont have access, you can have experiences in a place if you cant get in?

Its almost a question of if a tree falls ..blah .. blah .. blah. You get my drift.

i am from wexford me self, live about 10 miles from loftus hall. there has being many talks what happened there and i wish it where true, but as stated by other people every county does have reports of the devil. then the pint of the lovely black stuff came along and that blocked our judgment, it is a kool place to vist alright and i would wish it would be open to the public. there has being movies and tv shows filmed there and there was a documentary made about hall years ago. me and my m8 use to go driving allot down around hook but any time we passed loftus hall we never said to each think no bad thoughts the devil will get ya. place to visit if ever in wexford. and if ur lucky the tide will be in and the blow hole in hook will be shooting its load all over the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,657 ✭✭✭trishw78

Wasn't the original building supposed to have 3 rows of 6 buildings and when they rebuilt it the put in the 3 rows of 9 windows.

    Spooky....

I remember being told about the devil story when I was little I think I was about 5 or 6 at the time the Nuns were occupying the place. It was later turned into a guest house I heard that they used to make a killing on Halloween weekend.

    Excuse the pun

I was there yesterday, and was fortunate enough to befriend the caretaker. He has given me express permission to have access to the grounds, to take photographs. He also asserted that he would not come after me with his shotgun and shoot me.
It is sad to hear from him, that all the windows and doors had to be boarded up, due to constant vandalism by louts. Breaking the windows with stones, and even recently, they still pry off the plywood and break in.
So these are the people who are to blame, for the 'no trespassing' situation.
It sickens me to think such disrespect and pure wanton damage, has been inflicted on such a monumental and grand buildng like this by arseholes!
I found the caretaker to be a very guarded man, and have established a rapport with him. He does not usually take to strangers asking questions about the house.
I observed a slight sadness in his eyes, as he described how water was now getting in through the roof, and the place is indeed, slowly falling into desrepair.
He also related other things to me, but i don't wish to breach his confidence.

Later down the road, i may have the possibility to gain legal access inside the house with him. Once enough trust has been established...who knows?

So, for anyone planning to break into the house illegally - be prepared to be arrested - and remember - it was the constant actions of yours that deprived the rest of the public from enjoying the splendour of Loftus Hall...
