I don't know if anyone has played a game to the mid-to-late game in the new patch yet; but these changes are going to absolutely kill the balance of production in the late-game. It's hard enough to build new districts, military units or space projects as it is without killing about 20-30 production from every city.
Kind of makes it pointless to build districts of the same type for nearby cities doesn't it. Seems like entertainment complex in one and industrial in the other is the way to go. They have reduced the production costs of space race projects by 40% though

Ah, so the 4 DLC will be little scenario packs like this. More fool me but I thought it would include the actual, inevitable, God's and Kings style expansions. A thank you for pre-purchasing at extra cost.

This stuff sounds fun but I'd have expected to see it just turn up in a free patch release.

Hopefully for those that did buy the deluxe version, they get at least one of the 'big' type expansions in the 4 DLC, one wouldn't be too bad at all but none would generally be pretty poor form to be honest.

    New update is live.

    There's a new DLC available - Australia!

    Wild stuff. Interesting choice.

Also, huge news - the Steam Workshop is live. Looking forward to my Huge Earth Map.

    Full list of updates here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/civ/comments/5vuhrz/civilization_vi_australian_summer_2017_update_now/

Bug fixes, AI tweaks to make them a bit less thick, balance changes (including a fairly **** one to Harbours IMO), improvements to naval gameplay... lots of stuff.

Haven't played in a while now but might give it another crack soon.
Especially if we start to see some mods launched on Workshop.

Does Australia come with poisonous spiders, man eating crocodiles and swimming knives?

First expansion is out Feb 8th, 2018 - I've enjoyed the base game let's hope it gives as much extra depth as Gods and Kings did for Civ V!

More info and some extra features in the link - great to see peaceful city flipping and 'ages' back, in my opinion.

    https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/11/in-civilization-vis-new-expansion-a-golden-age-is-nigh-or-maybe-a-dark-age/
A new expansion for Civilization VI, called Civilization VI: Rise and Fall, was announced today. The expansion looks to majorly shake up the flow of the game with era-long modifiers that will force you to shift your strategy for fear of losing your cities, or out of ambition to seize others'. Its centerpiece feature is the addition of "Golden Ages," "Dark Ages," and "Heroic Ages"—macro events that apply each civilization's ever-shifting fortunes, achievements, and momentum to a struggle for territory and cultural influence.

The expansion will also add governors, a greatly expanded alliances system, cities that peacefully flip between civilizations, and an "Historic Moments" system that gives players special milestones that impact outcomes. Players can respond to "emergency situations," which allow the civilizations at the bottom to pool their resources in order to gain benefits that help elevate them all closer to the top players. And, of course, expect new civilizations and leaders.

The Historic Moments, city flipping, and ages all play into one another. You might remember Golden Ages from past Civilization titles; typically, they were short-term boosts to your civilization's happiness or output that lasted for a few turns. This time, they last for an entire era (Ancient, Medieval, and so on), and they affect a resource called loyalty. With loyalty, you can flip other civilizations' cities without firing a shot—just like culture-flipping in, say, Civilization IV—or have yours flipped away from you.

In Golden Ages, your loyalty is increased and your cultural influence on other civs is powerful. In Dark Ages, it's decreased, and you're vulnerable. But even in a Dark Age, there's hope; you can use special Dark Age policies to ultimately find your way to a Heroic Age, which is even better than a Golden Age.

Historic Moments are already in the game, in a way—they include events like circumnavigating the globe. But now there are more of them, and they're not just fun milestones. As you accumulate Historic Moments, you gain progress toward a future Golden Age. They're also added to your Timeline, a new view that lets you see your progress up to the current day. Video game company Firaxis says this Timeline view is, among other things, intended to help you find your bearings when you're returning to a game you had left behind for a while.

I can't believe this has been out for over a year now.
It feels like I've barely played it.

After being initially interested in the changes I've eventually been persuaded that the game just isn't very good.

I put an awful lot of effort into trying to like it but I haven't finished a game since about a month after launch.
I think it still has potential but there's so much tedious guff that has to be pared away to get to the game before I'll be much in the way of interested.

Tweaking the diplomacy isn't going to cut it when I'm finding the whole system of city mangement to be an absolute chore.

As it turned out the digital deluxe included all the bonus Civs so that was nice.

I like it personally, but am not as eager to dive into 'yet another game' as I was with 5, though the city management isn't a big issue for me (beyond not being able to create queues, which is very irritating when you go wide). I only got Civ V after both expansions were out as I didn't have a computer good enough to run it prior, but off the reaction to VI it does seem a lot of people absolutely detested V before G&K and BNW.

But this is one of the only title I'd definitely classify myself as a 'fanboy' of since I've been playing it since I was about six years old (the auld lad got the first one when it came out) and pronounced the maybe most important tech in the first game to get 'phisopholy' (no joke!), so I'm going to be biased and overly optimistic by default I guess. :o

It's telling that some of the bigger Civ streamers/YouTubers are still playing Civ V because the interface for Civ VI is so awful. CQUI was off to a promising start and then stalled after the last patch (cause it seems they made a load of decisions that fupped over the modders and they were unhappy). So there's a community branch of CQUI which seems to be helping, but it is frustrating to be waiting for modders to make a game workable.

Massive Civ fan also. Just did not dig at all for some reason. I'll get this for sure though, sounds promising. Diplomacy is something that always annoyed me about Civ, so i'm excited to learn they're putting some effort into improving it.

So has it made much difference? I bought Civ 1 when it hit the shop (there was only one I knew of at the time) and every civ game since bar 6. Was not a fan of 5 at all. Thought each one was fantastic to 4. Have bought a desktop and graphic card to play 6 so probably get in the next sale.

Never considered Civ V. Was looking at potentially giving it a go but it looks quite complicated.

Civ V is great, it's actually much more simplified than previous offerings by all accounts, it's where I jumped into the series. Look for Quill18 or Marbozir (amongst others) on YouTube to learn how it works and you'll have the fundamentals down in an hour or so (and remember that a game will last about 10-12 hours :))

Gave up on it and went back to Civ 5. Have played every version from Civ 1 and this is the first time that I've gone back to an earlier version instead.

Having said that, I’m kind of done with Civ 5 now too (finally). It annoys me that in every fupping version of the game, the AI is the stand-out weakness, and it seems like they never do any work on it all. Instead they faff about with shiney new game mechanics without sorting out the fundamentals. Civ seems forever destined to remain a Ferrari with an engine of a lawnmower. 20 years since Deep Blue beat Kasparov and knats are still smarter than Civ's AI.

I finally bought this (digital delux edition including all dlc) and the recently announced Rise and Fall expansion thanks to a steam gift voucher from a secret Santa.

I haven't tried much yet but I think that I will have to change/improve my city placement ideas.

Rise and Fall expansion releases tomorrow.

    https://civilization.com

Some new civs with a new era system - golden, normal, dark and heroic ages.

A city loyalty system with the prospect of gaining or loosing cities (to rivals or to independence) if they aren't loyal to the empire.

Been watching some of the upcoming stuff via the press preview build they sent out to YouTubers and I'm really looking forward to giving it a go. I suspect that Warhammer 2 Mortal Empires with the Tomb Kings I started a couple of days ago is going to go on hold :)

The new civs look cool too, always nice to have more variety.

So what with new expansion, if you didn't buy Rise and Fall how does that work.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

I'd imagine it'll be like Civ V if you didn't have one or another of the expansions. Some of the more popular mods had separate releases for whether or not you had Gods and Kings and/or Brave New World, so I suspect this will be the same.

Rise and Fall is an interesting expansion though, I'd recommend it and the Civ stuff goes on sale quite regularly.

Not sure what it was about Civ 6, but i could never get into it like i did previous games. Maybe it's the more cartoony graphics, but it just never clicked with me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,416 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

It's the diplomacy and warmongering penalties for me. Seems more punitive than in previous games. Hopefully the new system in the expansion will help combat that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,495 ✭✭✭✭Billy86

I timed it before, on marathon, and after Japan invaded me around 1000BC which ended up in me taking all their cities and ignoring their (one) plea for a treaty. Can't remember but I think it was around 300BC when I finished them.

That was the only war I was involved in all game, and trey attacked me... Yet fast forward to about 1200AD (again, on marathon) and every civ in the whole game still hated me because of the warmonger penalty.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

I've been looking at some of the dev streams for the new content in Gathering Storm and it's a fairly substantial overhaul to the game for sure. Really looking forward to seeing it in action. Of the new Civ's I've seen so far, I'm definitely most interested in the Maori and Canada - Hungary seem to be a City State focused civ and I've never quite been able to manage that style of game. The Maori have to find a patch of land and fight to keep it which sounds really for as an early game forward settling style of game and Canada seem to be immune from being declared upon in war and can make use of Tundra tiles, so should be great for those "leave me alone and let me get to late game and unleash diplomatic and tourism glory upon you all and win" kinds of games :D

Current game I'm on, decided to be peaceful and keep a small well defended empire for a change of style over my usual land and expand tactic. I get attacked by two AI characters teaming up together which i had been on good terms with until that point and now everyone hates me because i was able to defend myself and win a couple of cities, this is all pre industrial age with plenty of space to expand into without kicking wars off with me.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

They've acknowledged on the streams that they're changing the way this works cause yea, it's broken as all hell. 1000 years after you win a war that the AI started against you, the whole fking world shouldn't still be pissed off with you.

The Inca have been out on display today as well.

Isolationist mountaineers by the looks of things.
Mountains getting some love, and the new mechanic they're building on is earlier access to building tunnels, as well as getting resources off mountain tiles.

I have played all the Civilization games from two onwards and only have the base game of Civ VI but i couldn't get into it at all. I got it a few months back and only played about 35 minutes and quit yet when it comes to Civ 3/4/5 i can play for hours.

I also play conquest domination just taking over the whole map so i don't like being penalised for capturing cities and believe it or not in all those games i played since 2 i never onlce played a Science/cultural win. :pac:

Warmonger penalties aren't a great design - so I think they're changing in the new expansion. But for the moment, you'll just have to utilise the Causus Belli mechanic and make sure that you peace out before taking the last city - making sure they Cede the cities they've captured to you in the process.

Civ on the Switch is frickin dangerous! 1 more turn, but portable :o

Gathering Storm is out today, I just picked it up, but I have no idea when I'll have time to play it :D

But a proper World Congress and the climate change mechanics look pretty cool. I've been watching Firaxis, Marbozir and Quill18's YouTubes in the run up to the release.

So ala Civ5, is Civ6 finally a 'proper' game with the release of the second expansion? This has felt like a game that struggled to break out of its predecessors shadow...

That seems to be the prevailing thought amongst the fan base, but honestly, I really love Civ VI and appreciate the differences between it and V, but I acknowledge that I appear to be in the minority :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,941 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

Have watched some of Quill's videos too and the changes to gameplay are fairly minor. The world congress was in Civ V. Expiring resources is a good change. Definitely not worth €40 anyway and I've over 200 hours played, happy to wait for it to reach a more reasonable €20

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

I paid €30 and tbh, I think that's ok given the return on investment vs the obscene number of hours it takes to play :D

I like it, but still haven't got my head around how diplomatic victory works.

The new strategic resources takes some getting used to as well. Having a real oil shortage problem in my game, and it seems none of the other Civs have any oil at all so trade is out of the question.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,495 ✭✭✭✭Billy86

Sweden are an absolute cultural behemoth, I was only playing on the third hardest difficulty to get used to the new mechanics, and completely by accident won a cultural victory (which I had thought I had disabled, not a huge fan of it as you literally don't seem able to stop yourself from winning, and once it's over I have zero motivation to keep on playing).
