Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Anyone near an Iceland?? In Dublin anyway they have either a 99 cent shop or a 1.50 shop next door I was having a look in it today (a .99 cent one) and picked up Tooth brush 100ml Tooth paste and 350ml mouth wash all 3 for 99 cents :D:D:D Also found in the 1.50 shop one cans of all day breakfast 1.50 each (I will be raiding them again )

    i was in the e1.49 place at the top of patricks st today and got an emergency shelter (tent shaped bivvy bag) and an aluminium water bottle for 3 bucks total. not bad

    Yeah my research indicates that if you want a good portable solar setup you'll need to fork over the guts of a grand. Might be a good investment depending on how long you need to be out there mind you.

    For how many watts and how much storage capacity? Is that DC only or include a pure sine inverter?

    Unfortunately it cant be shipped to an international address.

    Important Message

    Brunton 26 Watt Foldable Solar Array cannot be shipped to the selected address

    Maybe if you knew someone in usa to order for you and send it on.
    $336.81 is a good deal.

    The ones on the uk site are the Brunton solar rollable 14 watt at 299.99 stg and brunton solaris foldable 12 watt at 399.70 stg are not as good a deal as the 26 watt on the usa site.

    If your looking at buying in the states look at the PowerFilm Solar products. They are lighter and thinner than the Brunton's from what I remember.

    Have a look at the PowerFilm USB+AA. I picked one up in Canada. It came with two eneloop AA's and will charge any USB device.

    Waterfordham that powerfilm usb+AA is a handy device.
    I like this about it ..

    Solar seems to be getting extremely cheap these days. I'll hold off on any major purchases till next year and see how it goes then, hopefully the world won't end in the interim. :D

    The chinese communist party has been artificially subsidising their panels to try and put other manufacturers out of business, so that might not last.

    a 30W panel shouldn't cost much more than 60 pound even a flexible one. Putting your own panel together using loose solar cells is another option and even cheaper. but you need a regulator. I have samples ordered to build one that should be arriving soon

    Good luck with the build. Interested to hear how you get on. The soldering looks like a pain in the face but it's something I'd consider taking on if I felt I could put a decent panel together that would survive winters and summers. If you build your own and ignore the value of your labour, payback times are surprisingly good even in Ireland.

The soldering looks like a pain in the face but it's something I'd consider taking on if I felt I could put a decent panel together that would survive winters and summers.     Regulators are after arriving but i need power inductors for them now. I have a pre-made 30w panel to run this off of. I could use a linear 7805 but that would mean the panel needs to produce 8-15W just to charge a phone and 15-watt days are scarce this 'summer'

    you don't need 8w, you need 8v, surely the panels put out a fairly strict voltage range and only the current changes?

    thinking some more the last time I used a 7805 It was perfectly happy to run at 9v, so if you could use the panel to charge batteries, either a bank of 5 or 6 1.2v cells or one 12v battery then clip the 7805 circuit on to that it should work fine and not matter about consistent sunshine

    It would work at 9v but still waste a good bit of power. Eventually hope to have a nice portable 5 or 10w flexible panel. Cause you just wouldnt pick up the 30w one when you're going for a stroll

    In aldi ,solid fuel hex cooker with 12 hex tablets reduced from E4.49 to E1.99.
    Box 8 hex tablets reduced from E1.99 to 99 cents.

    These were left overs from the special buys from number of weeks ago not sold.
    So if your store has some left they are possibly reduced also.

    I saw a pic of one of those on the aldi website. It looks kind of small like church penny candles/tealights. What can you cook with only one tab ?

    The tabs that come with the cooker are very small but the ones in the pack themselves are about 1.5 inch square and burn for about 9-12 minutes. Enough to boil a cup of water or heat a ration pack. Many a foil pack of baked beans and sausage iv cooked over the hexi cooker out on the ground :)

    Them tablets do burn quick.
    If you dig a small hole in ground and put the tablet in it less air with get at it and it lasts twice as long.
    Hole needs to be narrow so cup/pot fits on it but long enough to let some air in.
    Then put your pot or cup over the hole.

    Might be handy for someone stocking up. Lidl have some very nice tinned peeled plum tomatoes, something like 39 or 45c a can. Buy lots, can be used with a little garlic, olive oil, rashers and butter to make a very tasty pasta sauce. Or any other amount of different dishes...

    I never tried the McDonnell Noodles as they are way too expensive. 1.20 euro for one as opposed to 20 cent for one in Aldi/Lidl. Even the very rare McDonnell half price sales still leave their noodles a multiple of the price. They better be mind blowing at those prices.

    The Tesco Noodles are grand but the 15 cent ones are smaller than the 20 cent ones so not sure if they are any better value for money per Kg.

    Personally I find the Chicken Flavor noodles in Aldi/Lidl at 20 cent per packet to be the best. I find Aldi/Lidl curry flavor to be strangely tasteless. And other people I asked about this backed me up. So if you try them dont make any judgement until you try the chicken flavor !

    Tesco are selling off picnic stock at the moment, I picked up double pack of icepacks (very slim) for 85c. Lots of other bargains to be had. I suspect it's all stores selling them off.

    I've gotten the following for free (both from the thread and at different promos):
    toothbrush
    toothpaste (travel size)
    sample shampoo / conditioner
    moisturiser
    soap
    hi vis jacket
    protein bar
    individually wrapped tea bags
    hi vis arm band
    keyring torch
    packets of coffee (individual servings)
    artificial sweetner
    high vis draw string bag
    etc.

    Very good to stock up on little things, thought I'd mention it :)

    The torch I mentioned is one of the small, single LED ones that charities and such sell for about €2, its not gonna help you find your way through a forest, but if the electricity goes and you need to get from your door to the press with the torch / candle etc. It'll do the job!

    Just to clarify, I would never suggest that anyone replace good quality utilities with free giveaways. But to get your hands on a free bar of soap, high vis jacket or a free toothbrush won't go astray.

    Aldi have reduced the price of the itorch from 4.99E to 2.49E.

    Wind up dynamo action.no batteries required.3 tritronic optimax led bulbs.

    Cant go wrong with that price.
    These were left over from specials from about a month ago.

    Really nice canteens in the army surplus in middleton. Ex Sweedish army, Aluminium body, fabric jacket and a leather strap with a clip.

    Aldi are doing Tarps (4x3m €8) and tree saws (€3) next Thursday. Quality of saws are questionable at that price but always nice to have spares.

    The teeth seem larger.

    I got 2 from either Lidl or Aldi a few years ago too.

    Very impressed.

    You'll fly through branches with them. I only tried branches up to an arms width, though.

    They seem a bit flimsy at first, but the blades are great though.

    Dunnes in tallaght are doing bargain camping gear 3 man tents for twelve quid. Sleeping mats only 3 euro picked up a couple of mats cheapest I have seen them.
