The good thing about this thread, it's sports related... a very broad aspect to the World of S[prt. The previous 7 pages show the great difference... Rugby, football, motor racing, fencing, Winter olympics... The political aspect, stretching across Europe and the Mexico games...

You need a broad receptive attitude to appreciate the contributions and the rewuest for further explanations , hopefully, brings a greater understanding for all the sports illustrated within the thread.

Not fan of most US sports but this guy was voted best sportsman of the 20th century in some polls.

These medals were taken off him because he had played some professional baseball.

After this he played professional baseball for NY Giants, Chicago White Soxs
He played professional football before NFL was founded.
He played professional basketball.

BTW this is 1912 Olympics pic and he is wearing two different shoes and socks because someone stole his own and he found these discarded in rubbish.
They were different sizes so had multiple socks in one.

And Jim Thorpe was the guy that bet Mayo's finest athlete's record in the decathlon in the US.

Martin Sheridan won 5 (or 3 if you discount 06) Olympic golds, 9 (4 if you discount 06) Olympic medals in total.
He won Discus Gold in 04, 06 and 08.
Greek Discus Gold in 08 and Shotput gold in 06.

In 1988 he was inducted into the USA Track & Field hall of fame.

Some people reckon the definition of sport is one where you chase round the place or end up in a sweat.

Then when you tell them that guys like racing/rally drivers sweat buckets you are told it is not a sport because they are sitting.

Then the argument is it is not a sport because it depends on some form of mechanical device.

Some would not see skeleton, luge ore bobsled as sports since "shure isn't only sitting or lying there and gravity does the rest".

LOL my problem, is not the understanding or the assumption, it's a matter of being too polite.

Someone asks a questions, I answer the question. It's not for me to take on board, address or correct the initial assumption.

Now, Chess, included early on the thread but no real adverse comment.

Sport, sporting, being a sport all have a multitude of meaniong, " he was sporting a fine Nike trainers" meaning he was wearing,,, vbeing a sport, and allowing someone to " slip in without a ticket"

Then, there are a multitude of activities that are clearly defined as a sport, sliding pices of rock along the ice, generally overweight ladies and gentlemen throwing small barbs at a circular board, or clubbing a small ball around a massive park in an attempt to force the small ball into a hole in the ground.

You may consider riding specialist lightweight bikes in a circle or skating in circles chasing other people or being chased as not in the true and descroptive elements of sport.

Then, from the puristist point of view, anything other than the strenuous activities included in the very first Olympic Games are the only true sports.

Now, i'm not sure if you understand the gist of this missive. Allow me to clarify, I really don't give a **** what the loacal troll thinks, O post as a small appreciation of the effort, dedication, achievement of the indivudual involved.

John Lenihan - I only became aware of this man when reading a newspaper article last year . Con Houlihan once wrote that of all our unsung heroes he was just about the most unsung

World Mountain racing champion in 1999 but what is most impressive is his toughness and durability - winner of the annual Carrauntoohil mountain race 19 times - unbelievable really

Coupled with the fact that he overcame serious injury to do so ranks him for me right up there with the best sportspeople Ireland has produced.

I am currently reading his book Tough as Leather , I would follow most sports and to be honest I don't know how I was not aware of an athlete of that calibre in our country for so long

Payne Stewart celebrates victory in the 1999 US Open, only 4 months before his tragic death when the Learjet he was travelling in lost cabin pressure and crashed after flying on autopilot until it ran out of fuel. Stewart and the others on board would have been long dead before the crash.

He was the last of the mainstream golfers to wear the traditional 'plus fours' when playing.

One of my favourite sporting memories. I even think Pat Rafter was happy that he won it. Came through an epic 5 set semi final too as well as the epic 5 set final!

The South Koreans.... knew her strengths and played to them... In my humble opinion.

Christie won a lot of fans with her dignity in very difficult circumstances.

Danoli and Tom Foley are one of my favourite irish sporting stories, there was something special about the small Irish trainer with the gentle kind manner taking on the established yards and beating them.

The public took this horse to their hearts in a huge way , out of all the great days none were greater for me than the Sun Alliance in Cheltenham 1994

What an atmosphere and what a roar when he crossed the line a winner, I love this quote from a racing post writer at the time

"They cheered him down to the start," wrote George Ennor in the Racing Post, "they cheered him as he started, they cheered more loudly as he took the lead, and they raised the roof as he passed the post in front."

Bookies were literally cleaned out that day and I really think it was a magnificent training performance by Foley

Well it is wrong.
Don't believe everything google or wiki tells you.

That is definitely a Liverpool 1983 jersey and man united wore black shorts and white shirts in the final.
Also one of guys looks like Daglish and the other with tache looks like Souness.
And goalie looks like Bailey.
There is not a Villa jersey in sight.
