Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Some nice new touches in 13. I like how you now hide toolbar and change font size in browser.

Dark mode does need work though

Used the new car play for the first time today.

The new home screen will only work with Apple Maps, which means it’s absolutely useless.

Other than that it’s ok. The layout of now playing is a bit better, and there’s a calendar.

Google Maps should work probably need an update for Google Maps to make it work with IOS13

Is it possible to turn off dark mode on an app by app basis? Apple maps is terrible in dark mode.

Was surprised to see my SE got the update, nice having the new faux-3D-touch. Funny how even on the small screen, multi-orientation is supported too. Can use mail upside down for some reason :)

anyone else with a series one or two apple watch find since upgrading your phone to ios13 that notifications now come in first on the phone and a delay on the watch?

I've a series 3 and it was happening this morning. I restarted both watch and phone and it seems to have fixed it.

Google Maps, as an app, works fine, exact same as before.

But the home screen on carplay now shows like widgets. The right hand side of the screen is a map, the bottom left is now playing (play/pause, forward and back buttons) and the top left a list of destinations to go.

This map, and the locations, are both Apple Maps and cannot be configured (that I can find anyway) to any other map provider. Which means it's absolute garbage and makes the whole home screen pointless.

Having used it for nearly a day now I can say I’m really liking it. Normally these ‘performance improvements’ aren’t that noticeable but these really are. FaceID is noticeably faster for me, not sure if they’ve sped up animation or not but it’s deffo noticeable.

Overall I’ve found it to be very stable. No app crashes or major bugs. Mail seems to be the worst and it’s only one or two minor UI things that aren’t a big issue for me. Dark mode and swipe are nice. App updates such as Activity, Health, Photos etc are all welcome too.

I reset the iPhone and updated to start with a fresh install of iOS so it probably helped with the overall smoothness of the update.

One thing I’ve avoid is upgrading to the newer iCloud sync with the Reminders app, until the macOS update is out. Overall another solid update.

Where they’ve put the app updates in the App Store is just a matter of getting used to it. Once I found where it had been put it’s grand actually.

Yeah do it a couple of times and you know exactly where to go again.

The swipe keyboard is good, but they have some improvements to do in the autocorrect department.

One issue I have seen repeatedly is the Siri Shortcut for Google Assistant vanishing. I’ve had to re-add it 3 or 4 times at this stage, though I’m not sure if it’s a system or app issue.

Anyone know is there a quicker workaround for getting to the UK App Store than having to change your billing information each time? Before, you could just sign out and sign in with your UK store Apple ID.

EDIT: I found it. When you click on the App Store click on your profile in the top right corner, scroll to the bottom and sign out, then sign in using your Apple ID for the App Store Country that you have created.

My watch notifications don't seem to be working properly since updating to 13. Watch software updated to 6.0 too so the problem could be there. All settings set the same as before.

Update is not showing for me when I go to software update. Have restarted phone but no joy,

    Any ideas?

    Iphone 8 plus.

Resolved: I had an iOS 12 beta profile installed . Removed that and iOS 13 came up. Installing now.

Very strange....are you on an old ios 12 beta profile or anything that could be blocking the download?

Have to say I really don’t like the new Music app’s Now Playing screen. Having the song queue below the page was handy. Bringing up the song queue now with the button removes the tracking bar for skipping ahead in the song. So you have to keep showing and hiding it.

Also, the “Add to library” and “like and dislike” options are buried in the menu, with the latter at the end so you have to scroll.

Really enjoying the rest of the update but the music playing screen is a big step back from a usability point of view.

If you scroll to the bottom and select edit actions you can remove and add functions as well as change their order so that should solve your problem.

    I think it's handy now.

I don’t use Apple Music but noticed the same issues in mail. The screen looks simpler but all options except reply and delete are hidden in menus. Hopefully they’ll track what people are using and improve in next few versions.

Overall I think the Music app changes are an improvement. The old Now Playing panel was confusing.

The text selection is miles better! Good summary of the changes at the link below, but even just moving the insertion point around is much improved.

Anybody noticing battery increase or decrease on their particular iPhone?

One thing I noticed is the new lyrics feature in the music app seems to have serious performance issues. Tried it out yesterday with a song, the phone got really warm and the battery dropped from 20% to 12% after one song.

Definitely needs work to reduce battery load. Cool feature otherwise.

Yeah, my 8 is gobbling power since the update. I think this is normal though as the apps get used to the new OS. It should sort it self to in a few days (hopefully)

Freedome VPN is working fine on my iPhone 7 with iOS 13. Must be just certain, VPN providers who are having problems, rather than a general issue affecting all.

Working with no issues on NordVPN also. I have it setup manually through the settings app though, not sure if the Nord App is working.

iCloud syncing with Apple Notes is borked. Maybe Catalina or 13.1 will fix it but Apple should really warn users when releasing software that's not fully functional or compatible with their own cloud service. I have been repeatedly burned by this over the years. iCloud is 7 years old yet Apple they treat it like it's in beta.

I notice the handoff between my iPhone XS Max. and iPad (Air 1) is off i.e. the tabs on what I was viewing on my iPhone in Safari are not on my iPad and vice versa.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

About the same battery life on my XR, maybe a little bit less.

I have noticed less notifications being pushed to my Watch since the update, and a some hassle with the car Bluetooth which wasn't there before.

To be honest I'm thinking of rolling back to iOS 12. iPhone 7 and here are my gripes...

3D Touch: Give it back to me please! I used it a lot and this take on it (I know the reasons) is just crap. I want my 3D Touch back!

Safari: I hate the new font choice. Bolder fonts for favourites page and the lower icons with a heavier line just don't look as slick as they used to.

Contacts: Every time I open it, it seems to open on the last used contact. No matter if I go back to full list and fully close out the app when I open it back it's open on the contact that I last used. That should have been caught in basic testing.

Bluetooth: I have big issues now connecting to the car now. Never an issue with v12 but v13 it just won't connect at all. Remove the car from the phone, remove the device from the car eventually got it re-connected but keeps dropping out.

Navigation: Was using it yesterday but for some reason apple maps while navagating is not keeping the screen on so I had to keep periodically touching the screen to keep the navigation on.

Personal: Now this is a purely personal issue and some may prefer this. I think the extra visuals look quite cheap and very android manufacture lay overs. Not slick clean apple like. Flick the silence switch and you get the silence on / off notice. The volume one though really annoys me. You use the volume buttons and you get a volume bar but then it resizes. Just not clean.

On the battery side I've noticed a slight increase in battery usage but I'm putting that down to me playing with it more to see all the hidden features. Will settle I imagine after a day or so.

Agree with those first two. 3D Touch was something I used regularly and miss it. The fact Apple removed it from phones that actually have the hardware support is annoying too. Basically, if you’re using an iPhone 6s at the moment, Apple just removed the flagship feature of that phone which is anti-consumer and I’m surprised the tech sites aren’t mentioning it.

I agree also that the new Safari fonts look a bit strange. Think they should roll back to a standard don’t weight for website titles at least.

Other than that I can’t say I’ve had any Bluetooth problems and I remove the contacts app so can’t say I have any issues there either.

The update could definitely use some work, it’s only really the Mail app that’s been buggy and I’ve actually had an app crash with it too, which is something that rarely ever happens to me. Can’t remember the last time an app crashed on iOS for me.

There are just UI elements that feel wrong, maybe it’s a personal preference. The music app ate through a large chunk of battery for me while using the lyrics feature too but trying it again seemed fine so not sure if there was an issue there or not.

Overall, I hope the 13.1 update tomorrow fixes things.

Yeah have to agree with the user above. Very android feel to it, therefore not very impressive looking or as slick as iOS usually is.

I'm finding IOS 13 pretty glitchy...I am getting very few notifications to my watch.

I was most looking froward to the changes to apple car play but as someone already said you can only use apple maps with the spit screen. Apple maps seems to be getting worse to me...its estimates are way off, it regularly tries to send me down one way streets or to take turns that are prohibited...irritating that you can't use third party maps on this page.

Apple Maps is as least half a decade behind Google in terms of accuracy. It's hopelessly poor.

I really hope they open up the split view to other maps, but I doubt it and reckon they'll try force people on to Apple Maps with it. It won't work though, Apple Maps is just too bad and people will instead just not use the feature.

Exactly the same for me with notifications on my watch. Calls and messages are fine, but any 3rd party app isn't showing.

Same, and 3D Touch still works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭gmacww

On the battery life that's likely the indexing kicking in. When you install iOS 13 it takes a while to reindex your phone and it chews up pretty much all the processor while doing that and does drain the batter quickly. Once complete restart the phone and you should be back to normal batter usage.
    MillField wrote: »

No what they've done is altered the long touch to in a way emulate 3D touch only without and additional functionality. It's now a standardized long touch haptic menu. You can really notice it in safari and messages. The press and pop feature for images for example is now gone as there is no code in iOS anymore to use the pressure touch screen.

On top of my post yesterday this release really feels like it's still in beta. It's very buggy. Safari is just not stable enough and the websites regularly load up behind the task bar and that. The mail app provides me a notification of a new email but I have to manually refresh the inbox in order to get it. Overall stability of apps and the os itself just seems very beta esque and not finished.

I'll hold off for 13.1 today and see if that improves anything before rolling back to 12.

Yep, they've done that, but 3D Touch also still works. I can long press photos, links, icons etc and the new haptic touch triggers, but I can also 3D Touch just like I could on iOS 12 and it instantly works.

iOS 13.1 now available. As well as this, iPadOS is now officially released as well as tvOS 13.
