Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think she will be Pat's replacement.
They should just keep Miles Dungan, he fills in pretty well for Pat.

Must be thinking of his pension.

Thats the way he looks without the RTE makeover department :D

    Not a problem on Newstalk!

Lets hope he turns up on Vincent Browne :)

    It has already been renewed.

Miriam attacked what is supposed to be just a temporary gig filling in for an ill colleague with all the enthusiasm of someone who really wants a weekday radio show. I think she will be Pat's replacement.

Would be an awful choice. Her ostensibly 'hardnosed' approach to current affairs is just superficial, and as her talk show stints on the box have shown, she's totally lost when it comes to lighter segments (which did have a place on Kenny's show...it can't just be exactly the same as Morning Ireland).

    Probably will be her though.

RTE are looking to replace Kenny with a jobbridge intern

Bets on "Gennnnnnnnuinely" nabbing the slot? 100-1 I'd say - unless, of course, they are thinking of subjecting us Radio 1 listeners to DLB
I hope not, Clare Byrne would probably be the best bet for a similar sort of show, but she'd still come nowhere near the Plank.
I think he'll find himself a lot more restricted under Denis O'Brien than he ever was at Montrose.

I agree with the notion of Philip Boucher Hayes getting the nod for Pat's time-slot. He would offer a great alternative to PK. We would actually have some choice amongst the mid-morning radio shows for once.

... As long as the top brass in RTE don't see this as the perfect opportunity to get golden boy Tubridy back over to his more 'natural' home of Radio 1, I for one am very happy with the news.
What does that mean for the Lunchtime slot?
    Lapin wrote: »
It will probably start a half an hour closer to Lunchtime.
So it'll only be an hour long? They struggle to get through the show as it is.. hardly seems worth the bother if it's now gonna be even more time-constrained... Maybe they'll push Moncrieff back by a half hour.
    Caledonman wrote: »
who would bet agains't Tubridy going back to RTE 1.. he is such a disaster on 2fm, and this way everyone saves face in him moving home as it will be PR's as a strategic move.. The questions is, who will come into 2FM??

RTE need a shake up, they needed to prove that they could be aggressive in negotiating with the top-paid talent and Pat Kenny can try to prove that he can attract an audience, not just hold an audience, when some of that audience don't actually know that there is more than one radio station in Ireland ( My parents and some of their friends have radios that have not changed station since the thing was bought).
They should just keep Miles Dungan, he fills in pretty well for Pat.

If it's Miriam, Tubridy or Claire Byrne that get the gig, then I'll be with Pat on Newstalk.

What about Rachel English? A very under-rated broadcaster IMO, and she could have a longer lie-in!

Claire Byrne is better than Miriam. I hope she gets it.

How long has been Pat doing Today with Pat Kenny anyway?

Kenny's memorable tv moments, worth a look for a laugh:

I wonder who is happiest today. Pat Kenny to finally have just one job to do (assuming the contents of his Primetime desk are sitting in a box at security for him to collect). Claire Byrne to have just one more old timer to climb over for the top currents affairs job in RTE. Myles Dungan for finally getting the job full time (I noticed this morning it was branded Today with Myles Dungan so I suspect he'll take some shifting out of the slot).

Actually I suspect it is Tom Dunne that finally the misery is over.

    • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,973 ✭✭✭RayM

Audrey Carville would be a great replacement, but probably not a big enough "name".

It would make sense to use this as an excuse to move Tubridy back to Radio 1, without needing to admit that his stint on 2FM has been a massive failure.

Now being discussed as the headline item on Drivetime, you'd think he'd dropped dead instead of just moving up the dial.

Reckon he'll last there? As other mentioned, maybe more restrictions on what he can and can't say.

Also, looking at previous example like TV3 giving Eamonn Dunphy a TV show to go up against the Late Late, the private sector media in Ireland always have a tough time competing with RTE's muscle.

Reckon he'll also miss the somewhat more luxurious environment in Montrose (compared to Newstalk).

But, like Marty Whelan, Gaybo, George Lee, etc, I'm sure there'll always be a job for him somewhere in RTE whenever he wants to come back.

After his move to the private sector went tits-up, it took Marty Whelan a long time (and a lot of Daz adverts) to get his foot back in the door at RTE.

I presumed that it was both tv and radio he would be gone from but confirmed on drivetime.

Intriguing stuff really, And it shows the way for others that the ‘commercial sector’ is open and ready to chat.
It leaves a huge void for the morning slot, although Mir has filled the John Murray slot well– but well enough?
      There are a few imponderables.
If Kenny has a listenership of 328,000 currently (see attachment) – how many of them will kick their heels and go with Pat in the morning. Newstalk news will get some lift – but I see a retreating army for the News at One

Pat’s 328,000 listeners contributes to a 24% national reach for RTE1 on a listened to yesterday basis. With his reach altered, what will the RTE1 new reach be.. 22%/21% (v crude maths involved there).

It means that a re-jig. Mir to the 10 part? Who takes over the weekend (and they do need some big names at the weekend)

Least we should forget, there is a displacement for Mr Tom Dunne. I said recently that he was in a tough spot up against Kenny and what do you throw at his slot to make inroads into that might. I didn't think the answer was Kenny himself!

They only have 4 weeks to sort that out – both stations which is not a huge amount of time.

Pat made an odd comment in that Chris Donoghue interview

"If I'm on a train, and there's someone sitting opposite me, I can guarantee you by the end of the train journey, I will know everything about them and they will possibly know nothing about me - It's just the way I'm built."

If you read that out in a Hannibal Lecter voice, it sounds very disturbing

I don't mind who gets it, I'll be following Pat to Newstalk.

Me too. It might even be a better show if Pat gets a free hand devising it, cutting down on or out the light magaziney stuff, MLOD/O'Gorman-type reports, 'banter' with the sportsreader etc. Challenge to fill two-and-a-half hours at his age, without RTE infrastructure though.

This is the last thing RTE need, they've been struggling with the same timeslot in 2fm since Gerry Ryan died. I believe Pat is an even bigger loss. Looks like Denis O'Brien's deep pockets have won out.

After listening to Noel Curran just now on The Last Word it sounds like RTE were going to cut PKs wages by another 10% so O'Briens pockets may not have had to be that deep

I like Pat Kenny and I like Myles Dungan when he fills in. I don't think they'd replace him, but I do like the option of 2 current affairs type shows against each other (provided they are podcasted).

Tom 'the most boring man on radio' Dunne is no loss to Newstalk to be honest.
