should sail through without an objection, it will be a piece of Cake compared to Dunshaughlin.

Reason given by An Bord Pleanala.
Surely, if there are no suitable buildings on a main street for a retail operation, then the only way a town or village can develop or progress is to expand the retail environment beyond the main street? By turning away retailers who cant source suitable buildings on the main street, the planning board is surely contributing to the decline of the town? No town ever progressed or expanded by restricting it's retail development to just one street.

If you take Ashbourne as near by example. Not only did they move the commercial core away from its traditional location, they actually built a brand new street entirely to cater for it.

I think that's a great example, main street is still going strong and the shopping area is great.

And if you think about Lidl in Ashbourne even more random location than Aldi!
Nah lets accept it. They had no reason to refuse it so they wrote total rubbish in that document. The sad thing is that we can get away with this.........

There's nothing random about it, planned on the orbital road, it's what proper planning should be.

In the context of being a Dunshaughlin resident, I am still feeling a little deflated and even somewhat disillusioned, following the rejection of the proposed Aldi store. Not because of the absence of Aldi as such, but more because of the implications of the decision, in terms of lack of development and progress in the town.
Aldi's only option now, apparently, is to go the legal route to contest the decision and obviously this would imply a period of years to come to a conclusion, one way or the other.
I suppose if someone from outside asks you where you live, you'd like to be able to answer with a sense of pride. You wouldn't be inclined to answer in the negative, decrying how you live in a place that isn't on the way up, and certainly you wouldn't want to be saying that where you live is going downhill.
Of course, there are plenty of positives associated to living here, as evidenced by the success of the annual Harvest Festival, for instance. But there is no escaping the need for a healthy competitive business element.
So all we can do is hope that Dunshaughlin will one day soon no longer be just a one-horse town and that a bit of commercial rivalry and variety will enliven things and and counteract the sense of disappointment that currently prevails here.

There are alot to positives to living in Dunshaughlin, its small but not too small, it's close to larger decent shopping towns such as Blanch and Ashbourne, the pubs in Dunshaughlin are grand, the Dunshaughlin harvest festival is really good and they got involved over the Christmas as well, proper Fiber to the Home broadband is finally becoming a reality to the most rural parts of Dunshaughlin and will be launching soon finally getting rid of the terrible internet infrastructure outside of the town.

The lack of business, shopping and restaurants is a real problem inside Dunshaughlin tho, all caused by a few incredibly greedy and short sighted individuals who are not only harming the growth of the town but their own business's as well. Such a shame this is really holding back what could be a great town. Unfortunatley I don't see this changing for along time, possibly at least 10 years before we'll get any other store or supermarket in Dunshaughlin. As long as the usual suspects are here, future shopping plans will continually get rejected.

I had the misfortune of visiting Super Valu in Dunshaughlin last Sunday - there being no other alternative in the village. Once again, I was overcharged. Leaving aside the obscene, competition free prices which ensure I do most of my shopping in Dublin, I have never in my life endured a shop which repeatedly charges me a higher price than is on the product. Just in case anybody from that store is reading: this time it was the purple lilies which had a clear price of €6.99 on all of them but for which I was charged €7.99. Needless to say, I have never been undercharged in said shop.

It is unforgivable that people in Dunshaughlin are being denied an alternative place to shop. For the good of the overall community, this price gouging monopolist has to have his day very soon. It's the older people who would be too trusting/unsure of themselves to check the price they are charged who I feel really sorry for.

I seen poster up around the village advertising a coffee morning with Regina Doherty in the next 10 days or so (someone might firm up on the actual date). Anyway, a Coffee morning sounds relaxed and easy going. By the time finished bleeding the ear off her regarding the rejection of Aldi planning in the village she'll bating back shots at the Bar at 11am. Thats my promise to the people on this thread.

the most important issue facing our local community is the one or 2 local business's that have blocked any form of competition from Dunshaughlin for over 20 year's. This is not just about blocking other supermarket's but killing Dunshaughlin in general by not allowing other business's to enter or survive in the town.

I think it's real important anyone who feels strongly about all this should at least attend on Friday and let our voices finally be heard.

I assume SuperValu has a lot of parking? Take good bit of it off them. Why should they have monopoly? You have to laugh. The same morons planners are responsible for the car dependency !

because Supervalu is the ONLY place in Dunshaughlin to buy most food products, it has caused year's of congestion between it and the main street. I'm surprised there hasn't been more accident's at that junction. Sometimes's that car park fills up and car's illegaly park because there is nowhere else to buy food in Dunshaughlin, apart from the petrol shop which only has a few items.

Just to add to the outrage here.

Virginia, County Cavan. Population circa 4,000. It's probably servicing a fair chunk of the circa 4,000 in nearby Ballyjamesduff too.

Anyway, Lidl has just opened in Virginia right beside the existing SuperValu. It is my understanding that SuperValu actually sold the plot of land to Lidl because they actually had the foresight to see the benefits of creating a thriving hub as opposed to pushing shoppers out of town. And it appears to be doing the trick.

I've relatives now that are going to Virginia more frequently instead of all the way into Cavan town.

Somebody attending the meeting might point this out as a good example of businesses working together.

That just goes to prove it's not the entire Supervalu chain that is causing the problem in Dunshaughlin, but the individual who runs it on Supervalu's behalf. The guy in Virginia is correct, opening another supermarket in the town will actually benefit his own business and all business's in the town. Supervalu Dunshaughlin are far too self-centered to see this.

If I was to open up a store tomorrow and sell oriental food, Supervalu would start a special oriental food section within weeks. All other fruit and veg shops here were put out of business, same with the butchers, The Wine Bottle (off license) and same with Centra. All these business's run out of town over past few years. There is a new butcher in Dunshaughlin now, I really hope he does well and stays open. They are also giving the specialist cake store 'Sweet Planet' a very good run for their money right now.

Can supervalue take any of the blame though, they make be objecting and understandably many would argue, but the final decision rests with ABP...

Thread should probably be changed to Lidl at this stage. The fact they are planning a Main Street rather than out of town branch should work in their favour from the planning authorities.  Traffic congestion can hardly be considered an issue since the M3 opened.

So far every supermarket that has ever tried to come to Dunshaughlin has been turned down with every bs excuse under the sun used to stop competition entering the town, I'll be amazed and delighted if this Lidl store happens.

Also are supervalu expanding, looks like builders arriving there today and if so it will make the current car park even smaller. No doubt this place will do everything in its power to ensure it's continued dominance in Dunshaughlin.

While I'm sure it will be a struggle, to say the least, I think if we can build up enough momentum and if everyone REALLY gets out there and gets behind this LIDL proposal, we might JUST squeak it over the line.

    One can dream anyways. :P

I saw SuperValu this evening, I don't believe they are expanding the shop, there'a a notice up stating (I can't remember exactly, but it's something like) they are giving the shop a facelift.

Lidl consultation was busy enough when I happened to pop down.
Was an excellent presentation from Lidl Ireland.

Although, I was somewhat disappointed to hear that, if all goes well and they do get permission, we're looking at Christmas 2019 before the store actually opens. :(:(

Hi all, I've setup a new thread for all discussions relating to the proposed new Lidl store for Dunshaughlin >HERE<. I have posted a few photos of the proposed store from yesterday evening's Lidl consultation, which was held in the Dunshaughlin Community Centre.

I think we should keep this thread for discussions relating to the proposed Aldi for Dunshaughlin, who knows they may renew their planning proposal in the near future. ;)

    no Aldi, Supervalu blocked it.

I predict the Lidl application will go the same way as well.

The People of Dunshaughlin should set up a boycott campaign against SuperValu, if as you say they've blocked these applications.
