Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

An "also-ran" is a forgettable individual overshadowed by others.

I find his music awfully insipid too - and the whining!

He is a man anyway. He might feel like his gender is female (no matter how much people dispute medical findings, transgender is a thing - and it is treated as a mental condition first in case that's all that's required; transitioning is far down the road if at all) but his sex is male. That simply cannot be disputed.

On the topic at hand it's sad to see this absolute mental insanity being entertained and normalised in the media.

    Poor chap doesn't look well

Why are his loved ones not getting him the help he needs?

He's won numerous awards, including an Oscar.

He's just completed a sold-out world tour with his second album.

Has had 2 consecutive No.1's in the UK chart in recent months alone.

I would say he has many years left in the spotlight regardless of how he identifies.

Maybe he (and he is a he) will be able to figure out on his own that a shaft and a big hairy nutsack probably means he's a he (and he is a he).

Good to see the pendulum is swinging back towards common sense once more.

Finally, the expectation of pandering subsides.

    I'm sick of this.

Don’t be afraid to express yourself (Sam Smith is openly gay), gave him a lot of good publicity.

Where as all this, don’t be afraid to pretend you’re someone else, absolute nonsense.

There’s a major contradiction here, but I wouldn’t worry too much about Sam, he’s in for the attention of it

Explain manspaining to me like you would to a ten year old.

Not only is he going to tell you, he's going show you how to be female.

I actually don't mind his music, I wouldn't switch it off if it came on the radio...

I thought we were all trying to move a bit away from gender stereotypes like

I’m sorry but as a gay man I think this is absolute bullocks.

He’s s man who likes other men that men’s your gay CHRIST!

I can understand Straight, Gay and Bi people even transgender but this non binary stuff is the stuff of nonsense.

If he now wants to be she, does that now make him straight?

This used to be called androgyny. It's nothing new really.

"You've got your mother in a whirl
She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl"

The biggest difference is the media response. It used to be seen as either a gimmick or a sign of mental illness.

Kevin Rowlands career pretty much ended when he appeared on the cover of his solo album in a dress. If he had waited 15 years or so he would have been lauded for how brave he was.

... whereas it was brave back then. No biggie now. I often think lads like David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Brian Eno et al were hard as nails for dressing as they did and heading out and about in the '70s. Some of them were from tough spots and I'd say they took a beating.

Remember seeing one of the guys from Sigue Sigue Sputnik describe how he'd be chased through the estates of Birmingham and it was quite tricky in glittery platforms and fishnets. :)

I'm not a fan! Initially I thought Jameela Jamil was Maya Jama.
Maya Jama is a legend for her BBC1 Saturday morning show alone and lack of gaslighting!

I'd say Jessie J is only disgusted she can't jump on board this bandwagon.
She said she was bi years ago only to retract it later.

Late to the party so probably alrighted highlighted but found this part gas!
Sam Smith: I don't identify as male or female

    Later in the interview:
"Now I'm 26, when it comes to money and success I feel like a 40-year-old. When it comes to my romantic life and personal relationships with my body and my head, I feel like a confused 16-year-old boy, so it's hard."

...ok maybe he isn't identifying as male here and rather using an example of how confused 16 year old boys can be.
"I stand here as a proud gay man and I hope we can one day still stand together as equals."-Oscar speech (later in article)

Yeah...think you have been identifying as male. Maybe I'm sceptical but not sure I fully believe him with the non-binary stuff. His logic seems to be the fact that he finds himself feminine at times. What is wrong with the notion that a male can be feminine?

Only Sam Smith knows what's going on inside his brain and how he feels. None of us can call him a liar or tell him his feelings are wrong.

I never understand why people get so worked up about this kind of thing. If you don't feel that way, that's fine, but what's the point in being so dismissive and disrespectful to other people?

So if one day he starts telling everyone he's the reincarnation of Napoleon or Jesus Christ, his feelings can't be wrong and his reality is as valid as anyone elses...

    FFS like.

Its a strange world we live in these days. In what other aspect of life can we just decide to abandon logic, biology and reason and just declare something to be true despite all evidence and fact proving the opposite?

    Religion.

    Religion.

But it was a Catholic monk who lay the fountations of genetics.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,482 ✭✭✭Gimme A Pound

Yeah all this "Who cares?" (really dismissive expression that's often used in relation to things plenty of people care about - what it means is: "I don't care, therefore nobody else possibly could"), "it's nobody else's business", "He can feel whatever way he feels" etc...

He has chosen to talk about it publicly. Now he can absolutely feel whatever way he wants to feel - I'm not stopping him and have no wish to, but when it's put in the public domain, people will express opinions about it. And they do not have to respect it.

So what? We have evidence to show that genetics is a fact. Religion is still a load of bollocks.

I'd have maybe a bit more time for this if it was a Caster Semenya type thing, where you might be born with both sets of genitalia or tests show that you have naturally elevated levels of estrogen or testosterone.

    I don't think that's the case here.

Sam Smith is a man. A gay man, who probably doesn't identify with any traditionally male characteristics. But that's a result of what we traditionally call "manly" attributes, when in fact there's room for everyone from your white van driving, football loving labourer as much as a tap-dancing, headdress wearing musicals lover in the definition of what it means to be a "man".

I think women are a bit better at this - you don't really find gay women at the tomboy-ish end of the scale having difficulty in defining themselves as a woman.

Smith concluded: "Maybe I'm not a man, maybe I'm not a woman, maybe I'm just me, and maybe that's ok."

That might be the most ‘2019’ thing I’ve ever read.

Gonna have to start just referring to him as a 'fool' seeing as he doesn't want to be referred to as male or female anymore.
