the only way you'll know you are drinking too much coffee is to monitor it's affects on you

are you sleeping ok? is your heart rate normal?

can't say much more for fear of straying into medical advice

Ah apologies, should have put it in another thread, to redeem myself a little I'm very impressed with the WCC Brazil - Flavio 'Fafa' Reis. Definitely will get a 1kg of this next time.

Hard to say really, depends on what kind of way you are brewing coffee, different methods will use different amounts, so .5kg a week could be a lot or not.

Example, if you were pulling an espresso shot with an 18g dosage, then you get around 28 shots for your 500g. Between two of you thats 14 coffees a week each, that's not a lot at all I would say.

I would go through around 350g-400g a week by myself.

I brew for me and my OH. Go through at a max 280 g of beans weekly.

Lads, was going to order Xmas blend off 3fe because my favourite blend is there.
Is there a Christmas blend that trumps theirs?

I know it's all about personal taste

I've tried the Ponaire, Soma and the 3fe (splits with my brother) and the Ponaire would be my favourite of the bunch so far with the 3fe. I wouldn't be the biggest fan of regular 3fe Momentum blend but the Christmas blend is very nice!

Struggling to decide where to order my last pre Christmas batch from. I've tried a few Ponaire roasts, WCC, the Dublin roasters etc etc etc. Is Maher's worth a punt at this stage? I don't think I've tried Badger & Dodo at home, any thoughts on that? Exclusively pour over set up with a preference for nutty/chocolate tones rather than fruity/citrus.

    Have you tried Roasted Brown?

    jesus more issues with B&D

tried to submit an order this morning and they took my money but threw back an "internal server error" on the order page, and no order confirmation email.

Pretty shoddy on two orders now for me.

Can anyone recommend a nice dark roast for espresso please?

I've been trying to dial in a new Sage Barista Express. I picked up some Full Circle beans which they explained were a dark roast, but they are way too light in colour. Also they taste way too citrusy, tangy, almost sour despite good pressure on the pour, great crema and a good extraction time - around 25 seconds. The roast date was 7 days ago.

    Any recommendations would be appreciated!

    Ponnaire Sumatran or Burundi.

Has anyone tried Velo apart from the Aldi beans? I see they do a 12 month sub of a 225g bag of a different bean each month at €8.93 per month (€107 for the year) which seems good value - think it includes delivery.

Some of the single origins looks interesting so might be worth a punt

    Hi all

Just got a sage barista express and getting used to the settings using lavazza supermarket beans - with pretty bad results!
Had to have grind size at 1 to get any kind of pressure for 17-18g shot. Even then the pressure is inconsistent and only once got to 12 o clock on gauge- usually goes 10 o clock.

Have ordered ponaire beans - european and conisseur blends. Anyone use these beans with the barista express and recommend some starter settings? Would help me save some coffee

I agree that Lavazza Rosso is pretty poor, almost makes the machine clog up as the grind seems wet?

I’ve got the Sage Barista Pro and have mostly left the settings at the defaults but you are giving me an idea to change up the grind setting and try experimenting a little more. That said, I’m really pleased with the current results.

Typically I’ve been using 3FE or Cloud Picker but this week I bought beans from Nick’s in Ranelagh (excellent value at €6/250g) and while it tastes great, it could also be a good option for experimenting.

I have had a few different bags of Velo beans (Aldi bags and via the website) and the quality IMO is very good. Kinda irks me that their bags are always 25/20g less than other roasters, personal peeve.

If they sent me their Velo Tandem (whih I find to be awful) or either of the other 2 that were recently on sale in Aldi (which I found decent), I would want my money back or sub cancelled.

yeah agree with this, it would be fairly cheeky

I've cut ties with Bailies for not sending enough African coffees - I wish some roaster would offer an option to not get receive LatAm coffees at all.

Bota Fora from Badger & Dodo. Quite nice, but not the nicest I have had recently.

Why would anyone take out a subscription with a roaster who has coffees that you don't like????

the two years previous the Bailies subs were ok, and my own palate not as refined.

I suppose after three years of microlots from all over the world, I know exactly what I want from a specialist coffee, so in a sense, the Bailies sub has done probably what it was supposed to do for me.

Yeah, I can see it from that point of view but I just wouldn't fancy being stuck with something.

don't get me wrong - none of the coffees were bad or undrinkable.

I've bought some Cloudpicker Sam blend which I've seen recommended here in the past. I just can't seem to get a good cup out of it either as espresso, v60, aeropress or moka pot. It just comes out watery and bitter no matter what type of grind is used! First bean I've tried that's let me down. Back to Ponaire or Mahers next time I think.

    Anybody else have similar experience?

  • Registered Users Posts: 139 ✭✭KnicksInSix

I've had the same experience with the Sam blend using v60 and Aeropress. I figured it wasn't to my taste. Conversely I quite enjoy the Kate beans (Zambia) through the Kalita Wave, nicely fruity etc but I don't like it at all through the v60.

Yesterday I finished off the last of my Fórsa Gála beans from Coffee Angel.
This morning I opened up a fresh 1kg bag (roasted 26th Nov) and immediately noticed a different pour and lovely crema.
It's interesting what a difference a fresh bag of beans can make.

Picked up some pistachio cantucci in Lidl. They are really going down a treat.
