Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sounds like a splendid idea to me too :)

I'll consider it. Don't expect anything from me this weekend, I'm busy. And so help me God, if I come back on Monday and see any more stupid drama, I will be VERY unhappy.

As a former "moaner" and one time regular poster of Tcn (blessings be upon it) ...if you take silly seriously fine....if you take the forum seriously, then the forum probably isn't for you...but then again...it's probably not for most people in large doses....do what it says on the tin ..."single flyovers preferred"....less is more here...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,647 ✭✭✭✭Fago!

Just wanna put my two cents in.

    1. Anyone who thinks that we are cliquey here in tcn couldn't be more wrong. Maybe it seems that way but i feel we are very welcoming to new people. Take oranage for example. He wasn't a regular that long ago. Well as far as i know he wasn't. Correct me if i'm wrong. Anyway he just dove into the forum and started posting random silly. Now he's part of the furniture. Same with hondasam, teddy and many more. Just dive in and piss all over the kitchen table. Go mad. It doesn't really matter what you write, people will respond.

    2. In regard to the user specific threads - that's mostly my fault. I sometimes start a thread about someone because its funny to me but also to get them to start posting in the forum again....... But mostly because its funny to me.

    3. Teddy's idea is good but sarky wouldn't allow it.

    4. Can people please stop being mean to new people. It is scaring them away.

4.5. RIP chucken1. A damn fine poster. Sad to see him go.

    5. ???

    6. Profit.

ok that was 6 and a half cents. Almost enough for a wham bar.

Personally I think Tcn is cliquey ...and has been for quite some time...* just sayin*

Gotta say I agree with Cicero. That's really one of the reasons I not in here much anymore

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 44,501 ✭✭✭✭Deki

yeah, I think it is but i do come back from time to time. In all fairness though it always was cliquey a little - just was my clique I guess :p:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,647 ✭✭✭✭Fago!

Hmm. Well I didn't think so until you guys just said it. Maybe that's just me. But then again, most other forums (including private forums) are cliquey. They say they aren't but they are. Maybe that's what's happened here I guess. There's isn't really much you can do about that. 'cept maybe get rid of the chat thread (which I'm not the biggest fan of tbh) but when Sarky got rid of the chat thread last time the Nest saw a huge drop in numbers.

There was one forum I started to post in and after a week or so I stopped because it was too cliquey. Not a private forum or any forum you lot post in btw.

How would you suggest we get rid of cliques?

You never gonna be rid of cliques

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 44,501 ✭✭✭✭Deki

I don't really think you can. It is sort of a natural thing. I don't think the clique presently in TCN is the kind that shuts anyone out, just one that maybe isn't so comfortable for some people. Everything changes though- folks drop in and drop out and things change.
The problem is some of us can't go with the flow, or just takes us longer to accept the change.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,758 ✭✭✭✭TeddyTedson

The click perception perhaps is attributed by the in running jokes that occur cross threads. I agree with Fago about the chat thread. There's lots of places to chat.
When Sarky redoes the charter I'm sure a lot of things will be made clearer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,144 ✭✭✭✭Cicero

Tcn is pretty much like a joke....try and explain it and you lose the point of the whole thing..the way the Charter is set up and the manner in which it is moderated (statement of fact only Sarky, linking back to the charter).. it's a deliberate catch 22... If you want a cosy forum...go get a social group like TLGH which emerged out of tcn....it kept some of the tcn principles of randomness and adopted others....it was successful to a degree but without a firm charter it ultimately failed ....tcn has a charter...that doesnt encourage "warm welcomes" to new posters or touchy feely feedback threads....time and again posters try and change this aspect....and they fail.....until the charter changes the issue of making tcn more "welcoming" will remain....it's ultimately up to the mods here to change it.....( again I'm only being objective and factual ...no offence to mods here intended...but again, this is tcn...so no offense assumed either...)

I'm very bored. Might write one to piss off Sarky :pac:

Since I'm in a ranty mood, one thing that annoys me is how some of the posters here treat new people. Basically telling them to **** off. What good is that going to do? That's just gonna drive people away. Especially in the chat thread.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 44,501 ✭✭✭✭Deki

They sometimes do that. I didn't think they were serious about it though.

    Well said Cic.

    But:

It doesn't encourage people being dicks to new posters either. TCN is madness inside ur screenz and crazy and all that, which we all know and love. But where I draw the line is when madness becomes anger, yelling and bitchiness.

    Yes...it does...

"No personal abuse, unless it's REALLY FUNNY".

...define funny and you're into subjectivity .."personal abuse" is practiced regularly by both posters and mods of tcn..but then again, that's my opinion...so wtf is personal abuse as defined by tcn..but then again...wtf is "really funny" ?...like I said, deconstruct tcn and you probably don't belong here....and on that note......

I always thought that referred to calling someone a cow or a slut or a bitch. There was a situation a while ago where some people were going mad at a new poster for some reason. They took it a bit too far and there was a bit of a kafuffel about it and as a result they've never been seen again.

But as ye said Cic, it's a catch22 thing. Try define the charter and it kinda ruins the joke.

Can you tell the AH moderators that?

Not sure why that "things that annoy you" thread has been moved in here:confused:

There are two things ruining teh silleh: (1) too much chat and (2) rolled up balls of paper from AH that miss "trash" and somehow end up here.

This is the reason that a lot of my early posting on Boards was on tCN. Loved the silleh.
    Fago! wrote: »

This is why I, and I'm sure plenty others have stopped posting here. It's not just new people that get it directed at them.
When I felt myself being pissed off years ago in here, I posted in the ban thread, as I knew I needed a time out.
When Sarky got the job modding here, I came back, as I knew he'd be the perfect one to restore the silleh. Not sure what's happened, but he seems to have either lost the desire to mod the place, or is just too busy IRL now, but the Iron Fist seems to have become marshmallow, and the ones that are responsible for the bitchiness, anger and outright hatefulness are let away with it time and again. I just can't understand why!

Since thanking of posts is impossible from this vantage point, I shall just emit my gladness like nuclear radiation.

But please oh please implement that charter. Do it with the grit and temerity of a modern day Thatcher. If it were so, the Cuckoos nest would be truly a cuckoo place to post.

    Sorry.

Just a bit of paraphasing from LIVE AND LET DIE.

    :)

    "Secret agent? On who's side???"!!!

    Humour. It frackin' works. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Not in this thread, I'm afraid. I really don't ask much of anyone who posts in TCN, but this thread is for serious discussion only, and as such humour doesn't have a place in it. By all means feel free to go nuts on any thread but this one.

This one thread is only for the kind of thing I mentioned in post #1.

Maybe an introduce yourself to the asylum would be a good idea for the newbies?!

I've had enough time to give it some thought. Let me see a show of hands for people still in favour of applying this suggestion in some manner.

We are afraid to come in Deki!

Its a good idea in other forums anyway. A lot of forums have regular posters and an intro thread lets new people know they are welcome and that the posters are friendly.

You could put some sort of initiation test or something fun in it too.

    Why ?

I think you can say they are welcome to participate and post, but who can define friendly or enforce friendliness?

You could put some sort of initiation test or something fun in it too.
I am not sure what that would be. I also think we may have to define fun as compared to silly? Also I think this is just getting too complicated and I 'm wondering if it's worth it?

Ok I'll take the perspective of someone brand new to the forum. They get here and see a lot of crazy things and don't really know what to do. They might read a few threads, see a few regulars going back and forth with each other. The serious thread is stickied here and reading this does not give the impression of a friendly forum at times.

Friendliness can be enforced by reporting posts you feel are unfriendly or bullying to be extreme.

Having an intro thread gives new people a place to go straight to where they can be welcomed, and get a good feeling about the place.

I was just thinking that maybe get the newbies to draw a funny picture or find a gif that displays their current emotional state, just something I thought of!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 44,501 ✭✭✭✭Deki

good ideas Peach and hope it works. I don't post here as much as I once did because my "fun" didn't seem to match up to others fun- Don't want to cause problems. Everyone finds their own niche

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Defining fun or silly will end in tears. As will any attempts to add more rules.

I do not aim to let this place become a fluffy magical land of sunshine and flowers and happy elves for mollycoddled users. That way lies the stagnation of the recent past. This forum is finally starting to crawl out from under its label of boring forum for rubbish threads and toothless recycled fun for special snowflakes, and I'll set fire to the servers before I let it slip back that way again. Safe becomes boring. A bite is required, and shall remain. Posters need to be able to stand up for themselves, riff off others, provide silliness for others to react to. Simply counting and chatting don't provide that.

I'm busy with many things at the moment, and will unlikely have time to do anything serious about this for another week. Suggestions will be much appreciated, as long as they account for what I typed above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,570 ✭✭✭sNarah

    Yay on the charter.
The newbie place could work - I'm not sure if I think it will have much use as TCN scares the crap out of anyone unfamiliar anyway. It *is* quite a daunting place to post in but at the same time, it makes the beauty of it.
    Less drama would be lovely.
The main reason I'm not here as much is actually work (no interwebs/time) and a far too busy real life (imagine that), but also a wee bit the "mundane" threads, with far too little silly and other posters who just don't get it. (That would mainly be transfers from AH, the poor things, and rambler by's for the record).
    We need more MS paint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭Oranage2

I think we should just keep moaning about how unfunny the nest is now compared to back when and how some of the posters just don't get it till nobody posts anymore :)
