Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    The next question is:

In about 1956, the Soviet "Politburo" was reformed(not really) and became known by a different name. What was that name?

    The Central Committee?

Council of Ministers? <vaguely recall that from Tom Clancy's books>

Since a day has passed, we can try a new tack no?

What two ancient leaders were called the "Mortar and Pestle of war" and died and the same battle?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 115 ✭✭Zachary Taylor

The answer is the Presidium, or "Presidium of the Supreme Soviet". There was also a council of ministers which was by far subordinate to the Presidium even though the Council was governmental and the Presidium was party-based. There was also within the party a Central Committee which existed since before the 1917 revolution. It's all very complicated.

    Praesidium))

Manach musn't be around lol. The answer to my question is Kleon and Brasidas, the first of Athens and the second of Sparta and they were both killed in the battle of Amphipolis.

    Next Question;

Hrmph, erm...... *thinks hard since it is 00.31 GMT*

By what English King was the Island of Sicily bought during *I think* the Plantagenet period?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,735 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manach

I'd guess Henry II, via marriage to Elenanor of Aquitane, but it's just a hunch.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,335 ✭✭✭Éomer of Rohan

Henry III in 1254, 'accepted' (I like that terminology) Sicily from Alexander IV, the reigning pope. It was one of the grievances that Simon de Montfort had against the King - and the other nobles too, since Henry had used their money to 'accept' it.

Speaking of Eleanor of Aquitaine though, she was a right bitch.

Erm, try this one; what city state did Athens ravage in 472B.C. as revenge for seceeding from the Delian League?

And will someone explain B.C.E. - I should remember this but I can't presently.

    My question, slightly more modern.
Which US President decided to sent Matthew Perry to force Japan to open up her harbours to Western Traders in 1853.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,335 ✭✭✭Éomer of Rohan

I reckon it was James Monroe - that is a guess however. It seems like the sort of thing he'd have done.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,319 ✭✭✭sci0x

    The 62nd Army

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,335 ✭✭✭Éomer of Rohan

That is correct because I did not specify as to what period I meant; though I was thinking of the 8th Army in the drive to Berlin which he took over command of.
