Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The yanks got the rather excellent, and rather bloody difficult Dynamite Headdy. Beware the last boss of ridiculous unfairness!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

We get it this week too, Retro.

    Dynamite Headdy (Megadrive)
    Shining Force (Megadrive)
    Shinobi III (Megadrive)
    Drop Off (TG16)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Nor at all bad this week. I'd snap up Shining Force if I hadn't beaten the GBA game so recently and Shinobi 3 is a great game but no Revenge of Shinobi unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Breath of Fire II (SNES)
    Volleyball (NES)
    Galaga 90 (ITG16)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

No Wave Race 64. I'm looking forward to that since the PAL version was butchered. Will be nice to play it fullscreen, full speed and through crisp scart.

Still BoF 2 more than makes up. A truly brilliant RPG. This time Capcom handled the translation themselves instead of Squaresoft so there's no dreadful Ted Woolsey translation.

The rose tinted glasses are off. The translation sucks!

I looked it up, saw the dreaded words "random battle" and decided "nah".

How badly? I was looking forward to downloading it.

Not enough to ruin what a wonderful game it is.

You really shouldn't let a small inconvenience like random battles stop you playing some of the finest games in existance. I'd rather old school FF than the abominable FFXII or snoozefest KotoR.

    Cratermaze (TG16)
    Wave Race 64 (N64)

WR64 is one of the few "great" N64 games that I never bought.

I'll have to correct that oversight :) I wonder how well it has aged?

I wish THQ would get on the bandwaggon I want their N64 wrestling games and Konami ISS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

So those lucky SOBs Stateside got Super Metroid (along with the not-too-shabby Shinobi III and Neutopia).

Will we get Super Metroid this week, or will we have to wait until closer to the release of Corruption?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Neutopia and a couple of crap NES games.
    No sign of Super Metroid.

    Booooooo.

    Bonk 3 (TG16)
    Vegas something-something (SNES) *

    * Not its actual name, but who cares? Its not Super Metroid.

The yanks got the classic megadrive game Landstalker. Hopefully we are getting it soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Big megadrive week this week....

    ESWAT
    Crack Down
    Ghouls 'n' Ghosts
    Shining in the Darkness
    Sonic 3

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Nice haul this week from Sega. There's probably more games by Sega on the VC than Nintendo games.

    ESWAT is great game.
Ghouls n' Ghosts is a practically arcade perfect port of the brilliant arcade game
Sonic 3 while not my favourite sonic is still a great game
Haven't played Crackdown but heard it's quite good in co-op
Shining in the Darkness looks gorgeous but is an old school dungeon crawler and I never really liked it at all.

Just wondering if any of you know if there's a chance of Zombies, or my neighbors or zombies or something like that (can't remember the exact name) getting released ever. Memories

I think Zombies Ate My Neighbours was listed as being rated some time ago so it'll probably show up at some point.

If they were indeed a minor inconvenience, I'd agree. But when you spend the significant majority of playtime in random battles, then it's a problem. I can't think of a single FF-style RPG that wouldn't have been improved by halving (or even thirding) the random battles, and adjusting the [insert relevant stat here] points appropriately.

Playing a game should not feel like work.

I thought it was pants when it was first released, I won't be going back to it 10 years later!

There are buckets of great games from the N64 era, I hope they make better choices in future...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Mario Picross (SNES) - 900 points (!)
Super Mario Lost Levels (NES) - 600 points (!)
    Neutopia 2 (TG16) - 600.

    Note price hikes...

I wonder if Killer Instinct will ever be released on VC??

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Looks like we will be getting Sin and Punishment this month which was previously only available in Japan. Was willing to pay a lot for this game a while ago so it will save me some money.

I also see they are going to be releasing Turbografx Super CD games as well. Fingers crossed for Castlevania Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, Lords of Thunder and Gates of Thunder. Dracula X is coming to the PSP but the 3D makeover looks **** and you have to play through that to unlock the original game.

It's a japanese only N64 game by Treasure (you know, that small ex-Konami development team from japan that manages to pump out classic after classic and is responsible for gaming beauty such as Gradius V, Gunstar Heroes, Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, Silhouette Mirage, Dynamite Headdy and the uncharacteristically dreadful stretch panic but we all have our off days) that is supposedly super fantastic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 499 ✭✭Gizzle

    *lightbulb*

Cheers TmB and Retr0, that's the one. I remember reading about it in N64 magazine back in the day and thinking, "That looks swanky".

As a painful aside, did ye see Ikaruga is coming out on Xbox Live? :(

I'll probably still get it though, but I generally like to keep all the retro classics on my Wii.

You could buy the gamecube version although you'll pay through the teeth for it.

Hope we see a saturn emulator on the VC with Nights and Radiant Silvergun.

It's nice Nintendo are releasing some japanese only games on the VC even if it looks like they are charging a little more than usual. Nice to finally get to play Sin and Punishment. I don't know if Nintendo actually translated S&P for the VC. I heard an American version was ready for release but nintendo decided not to publish it at the last minute.

Yes! sin and punishment! class game! Phew gotta get me a lotta points!! plus paper mario will compliment super paper mario nicely!

Does anyone know if these price hikes are purely for the duration of this festival, or if they'll be the new prices for SNES games from now on?
They were fairly overpriced in the first place:mad:

World Champion Baseball, Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Jajamaru-kun...

    Woo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Had a look last night, and it wasn't even worth turning on my PC to come here and report them :)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

At least we are guaranteed Gradius 3 and Sin and Punishment next week.

Ninja Gaiden is a buggy and lite weight clone of castlevania with some of the most horrendously and unnecessarily tough jumps in any video game (I spent literally 30 minutes trying to do just one jump in level 5 and gave up shortly afterwards).

Anyone know if the other ninja game is worth it, VC reviews says it's good.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Fook Halo 3. Sin & Punishment and Gradius 3 tonight. One official and one unofficial treasure game.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Predictably S&P absolutely rocks. Controls will take a bit of getting used to. Like all treasure games its fully english with jap subtitles.

It's probably the nicest looking N64 game ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I grabbed it this morning and played though the tutorial and first level. Found it a bit klunky and stiff. I'll play more, but I'm not sure it deserves all the praise its getting.

It gets really good after a few levels and the scoring system is great. The game doesn't really suit the GC control pad so it took me a while to get used to it but when you do it's a great game for show offs. The sticky GC shoulder buttons are annoying, you have to press them right down or the game doesn't recognise it.

It's basically panzer dragoon orta except you aren't flying. The boss battles are crazy.

I'm sticking this game on the hardest difficulty level because I heard you can easilt breeze through the game.

Gradius 3 is definitely worth a download. It's not an arcade perfect port but thats probably a good thing. The main difference is that Gradius 3 in the arcade is quite possibly the hardest game ever created while the snes game can be beaten by mere mortals. There's an awful lot of slowdown since the SNES CPU was basically the same speed as a master system and many of the bosses that featured loads of sprites and the bubble level have been changed since the SNES couldn't have handled it. But it's still a classic Gradius game.

I want Herzog Zwei for the megadrive out now!!

My first command and conquer-esk game

    OUTSTANDING

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭TheAlmightyArse

Why couldn't you map Sin & Punishment's controls better, Nintendo, you ape? There's a second control stick for movement right there, and I don't want to have to use your smelly d-pad for anything. Oh well. Charging €2 more than usual is a bit cheeky too. But lummy, the game itself is amazing. Hooray! I'm just past the second level and I'm rationing my credits because I don't want it to be over too quickly.

Is it too much to hope that Treasure are using this release to test the water for a Wii sequel? Sin & Punishment 2 would be perfect with the remote and nunchuck.

THE first RTS game ever...which I have a copy of sitting on my shelf and have yet to give it a go. Keep forgetting about it. I've heard 2 player is great craic.

Is it that bad? Ever try to map n64 control pads to a usb pad yourself? It's a right pain. The thing just had so many buttons.

It's quite easy if you use a custom mapping for each game, since most only make use of two thirds of the controller. Sin & Punishment is no different; it would've been easy to map the buttons so that the control stick was used to aim, the C-stick to move, L and R to jump and fire, respectively and any of the face buttons to toggle targeting mode. In line with standard FPS controls and comfortable and intuitive.

As it is, the triggers are used for movement and can feel slightly unresponsive and imprecise, and rolling (by double tapping) is far too slow. It isn't too bad (the game is still playable and brilliant), but it's baffling and inexcusable when there's an obvious, far better method.

Charging 2 euro more for sin and punishment may be cheeky but charging extra for ninja gaiden and Gradius 3 because they both supposedly never made it to euorpe is verging on criminal. Both games were released in europe although ninja gaiden was called shadow warrior. All they did was give us the 60Hz roms (something they should be offering from the start.

Played more S&P this morning.... it really is a good game, but the controls are absolutely horrible. Pressing the shoulder buttons so much on a classic controller is very uncomfortable.

I wish Nintendo did demos, like XBLA.

I played it 13 years ago and I am still pining for it.

the way your drop ship could transform into a Mech to defend placed untill your troops arrived was a touch of genius

    NeoGeo now on VC...

First game - Fatal Fury - King of Fighters (900)

    Other games:

    Landstalker (Megadrive)
    Golden Axe III (Megadrive)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,844 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

    Actually five games tonight.

Fatal Fury: I liked the later ones. Anyone any idea if this is worth it?
Goldsn Axe 3: Quite possibly the worst game ever made avoid.
Super Thunderblade: Woeful stuff. Dated very badly.
Landstalker: Absolutely brilliant action RPG from the guys who brought us Shining Force and Golden Sun. Think of it as the megadrives zelda but in isometric form. Rock hard as well. Unmissable.
Streets of Rage 3: I personally find this to be as good as SoR2. A very rare, expensive and brilliant game and a steal at the VC price.

Great to see some Neo Geo games at long last. Can't wait for blazing star, Metal Slug, Shock Troopers, Samurai Showdown 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,534 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Cool, there were only 3 at midnight.

Played all the NG stuff years ago in MAME. Can't really remember Fatal Fury to be honest (I was never a huge fan of fighting games). Looking forward to all the great shooters that were on the NG (Blazing Star, Pulstar, Viewpoint, Shock Troopers) and Platformers (Blues Journey, Magician Lord)....
