Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Switch is a welcome change from Nintendo's post-SNES performance re: 3rd party games (forced somewhat by the Wii U's commercial failure, I'd guess) so the catalogue is quite broad. Don't expect simultaneous identical releases across Switch and other current gen consoles though, it's not a given. But a significant number of critically-and-commercially-succesful indie and AAA games are getting Switch ports - including stuff like Doom Eternal as well as it-was-out-on-PC-years-ago stuff like The Witcher 3.

Be aware that the Switch's lower specs means that ports will always look less appealing on Switch than other platforms. So if there are particular ports you're interested in, check reviews first.

Download vs physical is up to you - the main difference is, physical carts can be resold, downloads obv not. But the eShop does have sales, occasionally even significant enough to take notice (again, a bit of a change with Nintendo though I note that first party games rarely get massive price cuts).

Online play's not my thing so no idea what that's like, but there's plenty on here that can advise. You get access to NES & SNES classic games if you sub to the online service, as well as Tetris 99 and cloud saves. I would say that in general Nintendo's approach to online anything is still behind the curve, so if that's important to you the Switch may be a disappointment.

In terms of specific game recs, it really depends what type of games you like. If you enjoy 3D Mario platformers, Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Maker 2 are ones to look at, and if you like classic 2D mario check out New Super Mario Bros Deluxe. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is as fun as previous MKs, though for me the local multiplayer version has always had more appeal than the single player.

More recently, I loved Ape Out and am really liking Untitled Goose Game. Rocket League runs surprisingly well on the Switch, though I've only played the local multiplayer version.

There are demos on the eshop as well so you can try before you buy.

There has been speculation about a Switch Pro for a while, but the New Nintendo Switch is only just out (a minor hardware iteration on the original design) along with the portable-only Switch Lite, so I wouldn't bet on Nintendo wanting to release another variant next year just because Sony or MS have something new out. The Switch is, somewhat like the Wii before it, a different proposition to other consoles in the current generation and is best viewed that way, as opposed to being a Nintendo version of the PS4.

Thanks for the informative reply Fysh, I am going to invest in one especially as I haven't bought a console and years now and some of the titles do look impressive.

If anyone could advise on the online play of games such as Super Smash Bros or Mario Kart I would appreciate it.

    Some help please!
My son just downloaded rocket league on his switch today but is unable to connect to the rocket league servers.
Are the servers down or does he need to do something to go online.
He is connected to the internet and has a nintendo online sub.
All his other games are working fine online.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

there is a possibility that he needs to update the game after downloading. to do this > go to where you select the game on the home screen and press start > download latest software update and select that. it should download the latest patch and away ya go after that.

In fairness the smoke was a pic of an old laptop bag with Microsoft on it that the newest staff member was digging out to start work again. Fairly weak, even for the internet.

Ring Fit Adventure is touring the UK and we’d love you to come and have a go!

Where to start? It's supposedly coming to Dublin. Ireland isn't part of the UK. Honestly, how many of you knew this was on? I haven't heard anyone talk about it. They could promote it better, even tell us where in Dublin it is.

    https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/ring-fit-adventure-uk-amp-ireland-tour-2019-27670147621

I'm guessing it's going to be on at Dominicon going by the dates and it's on Eventbrite Ireland as well below. I had to Google it. Maynooth is not in Dublin, it's Kildare. Anyway, when you click the above link, there's nothing for Ireland. The one time Nintendo do something in Ireland and it's so unprofessional.

    https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/dominicon-25-tickets-77541924985?aff=ebdssbdestsearch

If it is here, no guarantee, there's a €15 fee. In fairness, the price is for the weekend and should be great value, hopefully. I've never attended before. This post has probably done more to promote it than Nintendo did themselves. :p There's also a chance for entrants to win a Nintendo Switch console, Ring Fit Adventure and a £100 voucher from the Nintendo UK Official Store. I must see if there's a blue moon in the sky as we're allowed enter.

Thanks. Silly me, I looked at the addresses and seen Manchester and Bristol. I had a complete brain fart, should have clicked on the one with 15th November. Anyway, Nintendo have an event here in Ireland for once. Even if you don't go, you should be able to enter the first competition.

Did anyone else book an appointment for Ring Fit Adventure? I booked Sunday, and got a call today asking if I could change from Sunday to Saturday. I was caught a bit out of the blue, I wasn't even sure if I could make the Sunday appointment when booking. The guy was very friendly, UK accent and it was only afterwards that I checked the phone number, it was the UK. He'll ring again early next week to sort things out.

I was a bit shocked, and it felt a bit weird. For starters, I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan, 30+ years. It was the first time I got a call from Nintendo, ya it's just some randomer employee doing their job, but it was like, acknowledgement that I exist and they care. I thought, I should ask something, so I asked is this being run here officially by Nintendo themselves. Yep, Nintendo UK, but I should have known that. I think they might be trying to cancel Sunday and just make it a 2 day event or finish a bit early. I should have asked if they have other games available to play. We don't normally get events like this here.

    General question about the joycons.

I know there was issues in launch consoles but didn't pay much attention as mine were fine.
    Recently I've noticed some weirdness.

I've 2 switches. The left joycon on the first one was showing as disconnected yesterday while it was attached. Then the left joycon on the 2nd switch was showing as connected but kept popping up a low battery warning. I was using the Pro controller and both joycons were attached in the dock.

Now today they're fine but I'm thinking maybe this is the start of the issue, as neither switch has had much use really.

Did 2 things I haven't done in a million years.
Easons in O'Connell st, and Edge magazine. 10.50 ouch.

(BTW does anybody remember ACE magazine, an Edge precursor ?)

They're listing their landmark games from the past 10 years. BOTW in there of course

Also a free Nintendo getting started mini mag. Calendar for 2020 too.

The price of Edge has shot up, it was around the €8.50 mark.
For the first time I didn't buy it last month, a magazine I have bought religiously for the past number of decades.
    Regretted it though!
Bought it this month and nearly fainted with the price!

I never thought Edge was the type of magazine that gave away calendars or stuff with magazine.
I was in Easons today picking up a book & the magazine section is small compared to a year ago. Probably around 60-70% smaller.
At that price it doesn't help them tbh.

It's free on pressreader app with a library card, along with numerous other gaming mags

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 241 ✭✭conormario

It's pretty unexpected you can get Edge magazine digital free via the library service here :)

Really - it was just some nostalgia for me to buy a physical games magazine!
The British gaming mags were always pretty special ... e.g. Your Sinclair; Computer and Video Games ; ... :):)
Often they were more entertaining than the games themselves - which was a good thing 'cause I couldn't afford any games :) or the hardware to play them on. Now I've got the cash but not the time :)

I think Edge had some spectacular issues. I think I had the first 20 or 30 issues which went to the great shredder in the sky.

Unlike most of the clickbait tripe out there Edge has some great in depth articles and a decent reviewing method.
And it's the kind of magazine I can find myself reading through over the month and beyond.

If the screenshots are on the memory card, you can take it out and they're on it in JPG format. Bit of a job to it, shame they can't be dropped into a Nintendo account or emailed or something.

I've created a Twitter profile for screenshots, and linked it to my Switch. You can upload directly from the Switch and then easily download or link them to share.

What does it matter if they have no clue? They are the majority of console buyers rather than a small number of folks like us that hang out on games forums. Everyone starts somewhere with their gaming experience anyway so the more the merrier. :)

I'm saying this in frustration not out of some kind of snobbery. Loads of families got e.g. wiis and never even heard of mario galaxy. It's just a shame. I'm seeing it again now with switch and I weep. :)

Cautionary tale, who'd have guessed that leaving your Switch on a radiator wouldn't end well?

Rip.. Left my brand new sword and shield themed switch lite on the radiator while it charged.. :(

While it sucks for the person concerned, I found some of the comments hilarious. My Father Ted interpretation.

    Dougal: Switch's melted there, Ted.
    Ted: Hmm, yeah.
Dougal: Will I put it on the radiator again?
Teddy: No, I liked it best the first time.
Dougal: Maybe we could turn it on this time, see what happens?
Ted: Don't think you should do that, it'd eh... just blow up and you'd be picking lumps of debris out of your face for the next year and a half. You'd get big red blotches and have puffy fish lips bigger than the rest of your face.
    Dougal: Like Father Bigley.
    Ted: Exactly like Father Bigley.
Dougal: Maybe that's what happened to him.

I’m getting Ring Fit Adventure from my parents for the big day and can’t wait to have a bit of craic with it Christmas morning with my siblings.
Was also thinking of getting Professor Layton as a present for myself. Although I got Pokemon sword and haven’t gotten to play much yet so could still be on that.
Last year I got BOTW and I’m still putting hours into that game.

For myself Luigi or Links Awaking maybe both. My mother always gets me a Mario game for Christmas its been a family tradition thing for nearly two decades now.
