Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've not got my Desire yet but I see Adobe reader is now available. Is it any good or are there better out there?

  • Registered Users Posts: 398 ✭✭Ample Free ...?

I've got it but there's probably better. As for operations while viewing a pdf, I like it. Moves smoothly and I like the controls. One thing I don't like is that there's no inbuilt function to open files, just a recently opened list. You have to maunually find a new file, e.g. using Astro file manager and choose to open it with the Adobe reader. My previous pdf reader was a bit sluggish but you could open files direct from the app itslef. It's name escapes me but I'd be surprised if there's not something out there that's an all round winner.

Just installed Google listen and bbc browsecast on my Desire. This phone just keeps getting better and better.

Adobe reader on Windows is a few hundred megs and gets updates every few weeks, just to read .pdf's that are to a set standard. No way am I installing it on my phone, I'll find a nice light on resources app if i need one, like the 6meg Foxit reader I use on Windows.

It's actually under 40 megs (for Win7), but the 'reflow' feature doesn't sound good, I really don't want a PDF layout modified to fit the screen.

I can't seem to see IRL Cinema or Flixster in the market. I'm using a HTC Desire on 2.1, not rooted. Anyone else having the same issue?

IRL Cinema doesn't work anymore - there's a thread somewhere about it but I'm too lazy to look for it ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 73 ✭✭CompFix

Ah ok,cheers. Any idea about flixster?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,807 ✭✭✭✭28064212

For cinema listings, use the Entertainment.ie mobile site (m.entertainment.ie). That's where IRL Cinema got it's info from anyway. Flixster isn't available in Ireland for some reason, need a UK sim or root and install the MarketEnabler app

I thought it was only the paid apps that you couldn't get in the marketplace with an Irish sim so when I saw it pop up on mine as "free" just assumed. <shrugs>

Sorry for causeing any confusion there, but I've an Orange UK sim in my Desire.

Yeah, even though it's free, it's not available in Ireland for reasons yet to be fully explained. If you install it through other means it works fine apparently

It does seem like a handy app alright with the reviews/ trailers and listings, and it comes up with the local Irish cinema listings for near my location correctly although I'm doing all the data over wifi at the moment.

Yep, good call, never even thought of checking that. Just after installing Flixster there from it, works perfectly

Yep its a legal source. Some developers use it cause of the market restrictions country to country.
Havn't used it in a while but I remember it drove me nuts cause it saved all the application thumbnails to my sd card and they kept showing up in my gallery :pac:

They've fixed that since. You can fix it manually by just adding an empty file to the directory with a filename of .nomedia, works with any directory.

I'm new to android, so i'm not sure if there are other services like this but...
Appbrain seems like a handy service, allows u to browse the market on your PC, laptop, whatever....mark apps for installation, and then from the phone app, install the apps you've selected. Also backs up your applist aswell.

FTPServer : Run an FTP server on your phone, allows you to access and transfer files over your wi-fi connection. -> http://www.androlib.com/android.application.lutey-ftpserver-zxx.aspx

WebSharing : For the less technically minded, WebSharing[Lite] give you a webpage interface for uploading files and media. The free version is limited to one-at-a-time uploads. -> http://www.androlib.com/android.application.nextapp-websharing-pznj.aspx

Any app to tell how much data each app is downloading?
I'm asking because for the last 2 days I've had my 3g connection on at work and each day according to 3g watchdog there has been about 50mb downloaded and I have no idea which app is downloading all this data.

For owners of any of Logitech's Squeezbox range there's a app to control the players called SqueezeControl.

Works brilliantly! I keep my duet controller downstairs in its cradle so this means I can control the system everywhere now :)

    Aye dead handy.
For those who like their toggles, SwitchPro Widget 1.6 is great. 7 button customisable widget.

Picked up "Connectbot" and "Torrent FU" last night.

I do alot of remote access with my home servers and pcs and friends pcs etc.

Connectbot allows you to SSH all over the shop which is pretty nifty.

Torrent FU lets you access your utorrent remotely. Well handy and will try get it set on my home server asap. It seems straight to setup, but it does require alot of port forwarding and messing with ip addresses.

anyone know of a good remote desktop viewer?

I was using teamviewer on my ipod which was fantastic when in friends houses, looking for something similar.

doubleTwist released a media player for Android yesterday. Works very nicely for both music and video, but it seems you need to use their desktop client for podcast syncing which is a shame.

Yeah its pretty good and does exactly what its supposed to do. Don't really use it a lot though. I only tried it over wifi, not sure how it would perform under 3G? I got it from a direct download on this thread on xda, just used HTC sync to install it. I presume it still works?

They all kind of suck right now, but there are murmurings that ZodTTD will make an Android version of VLC like he has done for the iPhone. Currently he's working on a PSX Emulator with yongzh.

Tried it this morning and uninstalled it within about 10 mins of downloading it. I use realplayer on my desktop as my main media player so I was intrigued by this android version but it's pretty crap. Very slow to load up and all the pictures are loaded up in a single folder, not in any grouping sense, no matter where they are on the SD card. The worst being that when you go to an artist and play an album the tracks are sorted in alpha-numerical order, not in the order that they're in on the album.

Try it if you want but it's pretty poor.

Yeh I know!:D I've been using it for years though and never saw any reason to change it. I've yet to see anything wrong with it, nor anything particularly brilliant about any other media player. Continuously amazes me though how most people are willing to talk crap about it despite not ever having used it. I think most people get annoyed with it because they fail to set it up properly and end up with a load of pop-ups and other such crap. Bashing realplayer was just one of those things that caught on and made the "cool kids" feel good about themselves.

Plus I was never really one to tag along with the crowd, for better or for worse??:o

In regards to Real Player on Android, it works very well on my Xperia X10, I'm not sure what it's like on the HTC devices though. The reason I like it is because it opens instantly and seems very organised, unlike SE's custom media application Mediascape which is probably the worst media application I have ever seen, it has to be seen to be believed!

Btw I am waiting patiently for Nullsoft/AOL to bring out an Android version of Winamp.
