go for the full licence once the 6 months is up, also with that and a 1 years ncb you should see some sort of reduction in 12 months time

    Any ideas,
What should I expect to pay on a 50cc on learner permit? Never insured on a bike but 15 years no claims in a car.
    Thanks

NCB for a car won’t be taken into account. You’ll start as a raw beginner. As for the price? How long is a piece of string?

Just getting a renewal now and going to shop around this year. Am I right to say CN, Principle and Axa are the only motorbike insurers in the market or are Liberty still doing it?

The lack of competition really sucks, but it's the broking fees on top you've really got to watch out for, particularly with Carole Nash. Most people only think of the total premium you hear from the agent, but a large portion of this could be a fee the broker puts on top which has nothing to do with the actual Insurer's premium.

I'm from a Border town and my cousin lives about a mile away which is in the North. He recently passed his test and with no NCB and having a license no longer than 2 weeks he was quoted just over £200 TPFT on a Honda CB1300 - he's 29 years old(garaged).

At 30 with no NCB I paid just under €400 for a 125 Varadero (garaged).

The actual Insurer premium for my CBF600 TPFT with 1 year NCB is €276.54; that really isn't bad, as it's parked outside the house in Galway.

On that premium the broker is getting a commission which is around 25%(€69.13) - they also have a separate fee on mine which is €72.50. So of the actual premium the broker is applying a fee for around 26% of the insurance premium making their earnings around €141.

Devil do you remember what the fee was on that quote from Carole Nash?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,958 ✭✭✭D3V!L

Sorry I never bothered asking. I was too busy laughing at them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,688 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

Just on Carol Nash and the broker fee, mine was quoted as €80 this morning which was part of a total of €306 to get insured. I had already rung Axa and got quoted €275, CN came back and said they would match that, I told him I wanted him to beat it so he came back a couple of minutes later with €265 which I went for. So got about €45 off that €80 broker fee which I was happy with, especially as they dipped me half way through the policy for €50 for the bike now being stored on the street after a move of house. But as is said they are not only charging the broker fee they are also getting commission off the insurer so there is decent haggle room there. Next year I'll aim for sub €250 but happy for now.

I had tried to use Libertys online quote but their website is dreadful and it didnt list my model so I gave uo. Had rung Principle too but no answer and they didnt call me back at 10.30am as was scheduled.

Got my renewal from Liberty on Monday. €646 for fully comp on a Honda Pan European 1100cc. Only paid €430 something last year for the same policy and nothing has changed!
Called Carole Nash, got quote for €393 with same particulars. Told the guy on the phone to just take my money. :)
I didn't even give Liberty a chance to revise their quote. Insurance really is a racket in this country, they pull figures from places other businesses can't reach!

I was quoted as high as 1100 for insurace. Liberty was the cheapest at 457 TPFT drop as low as 283 next year if I stay on the YBR 125.

Similar age, 10 years off the bike and CN were easily the cheapest on a 2014 Triumph Tiger 800. Sometimes I wonder where they pull their figures from.

Can I confirm that the only insurers for bikes in Ireland are :

    Liberty
    Ax’s
    Carole Nash
    Principle

Just got quote for 2009 KTM 690 SMR of €1310 fully comp.
38 years old, full licence since 2008 but I haven’t been insured since 2011 so my NCB is gone. Essentially starting from scratch.

That's a crazy quote, also in relation to Principal, their policies are underwritten by AXA. I left Principal earlier this year as they quoted nearly €200 more than AXA themselves did directly. Also of note, if you have car insurance with AXA they will give you a 'six wheel' discount if you take out bike insurance with them. Might be wise to a rider assessment to try and get the prices down.

That is a killer of a quote kceire. Im in the opposite position to you at the moment, havent had car insurance since 2014 and been on the bike 100% since then. Now trying to get a car for the winter and they're coming back with quotes of €1,500+. My 2014 policy cost €450 and that was with only 2yrs NCB. Now they want triple that amount, its an absolute joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,368 ✭✭✭bladespin

Feck, 2 options I can think of:

Try a lower rated bike - nah.

Use price quoted as a lever on the others, maybe be a bit creative with the price though they'll know if you're miles off.

My car is an electric i3 and my fully comp full benefits insurance is only €299 on that so I suppose I have to take the good with the bad.

My problem is that if I’m gona get back on a bike I want the KTM. I even looked at other bikes to see if they tickle my fancy but I keep going back to the 699 SMR in cork that’s currently on donedeal.

Principal will only cover 3Party f&t in your driveway provided the bike value is below 5000€. Anything over this you have to have comprehensive, but on a 8000€ value bike they are only covering a max of 5000€ if it's driveway parking. Doesn't sound right. A garage would be fine for complete cover. (Also Extra 40€ for pillion)

I have a garage at the side. It’s only 1m wide (basically I covered my side entrance) but using bricks and proper roof and secure door to front so I was hoping that. Y parking it in a garage (it’s classed as a garage for planning exemption) would have helped me.

In fairness that €299 for your EV is a bit of a bargain. Nonetheless it just frustrates me having 10+ years no claims and no crashes on a bike and the car insurance companies wont take that into account at all. If anything riding a bike needs a fair bit more skill and road craft than driving a car but they just treat you like you're an 18yr old novice behind the wheel and they price it accordingly. Everything in the insurance market seems to go in their favour and the consumer has no choice but to bend over and take it

Anyway best of luck if you buy the KTM and take it easy for at least the first few weeks, there is unbelievable power in those yolks and you're gonna be like a kid on Christmas morning riding that back form Cork :D

    Not going for it.
The seller is giving off really bad vibes.
Said it got a full engine rebuild. So I asked him why, was it general maintenance or did it develop an issue and then he replied sorry Nike is sold!

I got my mate to call him and he said yes it’s still available.
I’ve had a ktm before on and off as my cousin has one currently but I agree it will be hooligans bike compared to my old Bandit :)

Looking at a Husaberg in Wexford now if anyone has any opinions on them?

Had an X-Max 250 insured for just over €300 with Principal, but that died a couple of weeks so looking at replacing it with a new CB500X.

Been riding bikes most of my life, had full licence for 15+ years. Only started riding again a few years back, have 3 years NCB. Was quoted €250 odd to cover the extra expense of the new bike for the remaining 6 months, but was told that would go down to €200 if I dropped the value of the bike below €7500 (which it is really anyway), or €160 if I installed a ground anchor at home. A combination of the two didn't make a difference.

Not being from Ireland, I find the insurance here really hard to take. I couldn't even test ride a bike from a shop the other day because he said he can't afford the insurance for me to be taking it out of the carpark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,769 ✭✭✭horse7

I see no rhyme or reason with principal, they say if the bike is valued over 5000€ , they won't cover it unless it's garaged.

Probably rubbish as there are a handful that do it but the UK is way better for test rides, they just throw you the keys and wave you off.

They lied, I got insured on a 7k+ with them but it had to escalated to the manager. Not garaged but then I live "somewhere after naas" as I heard a randomer in the town say recently.

    Carole Nash
    Liberty

Give each one of those a shout, just remember 1 thing, of all of them only Liberty refuse to do Multi Bike.
