Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Apart from the Midlands is there other rifle ranges that cater for centrefire rifles upto. 308 ?

    Here is a list of all ranges.

    Midlands (MSNCI) and An Roicht are the only two that go beyond 100 yards.

    Midlands (MNSCI) is the only one to go beyond 300 mtrs.

    Only three ranges cater for centrefires up to 100, then as above only two out to 300 and one any further

    A few other ranges may cater for centrefires but their ranges are usually only 50mtr.

    The other problem is the law. Come rifles have what they call high muzzle energy (HME) and these can only be fired at distances of 300 mtrs or beyond. So while a range might be able to allow say a 38sp gallery rifle to fire at 50mtr they cannot legally allow someone with, for example, a 300 WM to fire at the same distance.

    A pity the military don't lease out their ranges.
    Because they are nowhere near the barracks, and Idle 330+ days a year.
    Good revenue for the state, cf leisure centres.

    Thats 8 ranges nationwide if my math is good

    I made enquires a long number of years ago about that very thing, I got a very polite but firm not a chance in hell answer.
    Now that was 20 years ago maybe things have eased a bit.

    There are 3 or 4 ranges that are within the grounds of the camp/barracks.

    I think it’s more so the fact that there’s a lot more than spent brass lying around on a DF range. I dont think it would look too good if a civvie brought home a smoke grenade or something else he found lying around.
    Some ranges contain grenade ranges, rifle mounted grenade ranges and pistol ranges. Far too much that could go wrong.

    I would think that personal injury claims would also come into play. The Army wouldn't want Joe Public falling over and claiming.

    The leisure centres are owned by the state and tendered for operation by private companies.
    Same could be done for certain ranges. insurance included.

    I'm guessing the Gardai practice on the Dundalk one , as I've seen coppy looking cars parked outside..

    I know from speaking to soldiers, that the place is immaculate after a session, and not a spent cartridge to be found..

    Because they have a long history of civilians shooting on military ranges. Years ago the UK military actively encouraged civilians shooting, because when a war broke out they had a larger pool of people to recruit from. Then you had things like the Yeomanry and the home guard.

    There is a new 600 yard range being built in Wales at the moment, its being built on old slag heaps from a coal mine thats closed a while now, and the land is useless for anything else really.

    Another problem with Ireland, apart from the desire to sue everyone, is that the GAA sports are not actually the national games, its actually pointless endless moaning about what everyone else does. Open a range ? You'd be blacked in the media as a gun toting nutter with a pick-up truck, a confederate flag and a MAGA baseball cap.

    In a country as sparsley populated as Ireland, there should be nearly a range of decent size in every county.

    Good point about Military Ranges.

    I served for over half my life myself, super ranges, SHIVER me timbers; good clothing needed, some had a climate of their own even in mid summer, windy, cold, wet comes to mind, but great days.

    Other than DF members, the only other's allowed to use ranges were members of FCA & Garda.

    Looking at our long history of shooting teams in by gone days, you would think we would have more civilian ranges, alas no.

    Or even using Dollymount strand as an impromtu range, we'll never see things like that again. Too much hysteria about shooting and the shooting sports now.

    I think one range in/near Dublin is getting closed because some biddy at the other side of the mountain complained about it. The place was open 40 years, there before she moved into her house. Wonder if it's to get back at her husband, who probably was a member there also :pac:

    One does need to look at our colonial past when recounting the history of our shooting teams in the past. I'd say the lads on the team were more than likely Anglo-Irish. I've no issue with that, just pointing out it was hardly a grass roots affair. The British have a fine tradition of marksmanship plus shooting sports generally are held in higher regard. Managed estates, gamekeepers etc. Over on the continent in Germany a jäger is held in high regard in the community. Here on the other hand a lad with a gun is a poacher until proven otherwise.

    As a serving member I can tell you now that most DF ranges in the country are busy throughout the year. 'Ranges' are not just target shooting (regardless of calibre or weapon) areas they are also utilized for training activities.

    Contrary to what others may think but has been mention here, the ranges especially the actual tradtional style firing ranges are kept clean of brass and any related by product of the practice. Units that fail to clean up after themselves have often being recalled back to the location to clean up.

    Some of the ranges around the country are no longer in operation or limited in application due to encroaching civilisation / housing development with either noise complaints or having thier safety templates infringed upon. There are a few raised eyebrows in relation to certain planning permission given to individuals around the out skirts of the Curragh Camp which then led to the DF been restricted on particular ranges. It was a bit of a coincidence that certain sitting TDs were based in the area at the time.

    Sorry, just outside Dublin. I only got 2nd hand info (mate who shot there told that their license wasn't renewed/lost), and as I can't find anything on the web I don't want to name it as my mate could have heard incorrectly.

    That rumor has been doing the rounds for a couple of years now and by all accounts its true. Their FB page is still up and running which seems to counter the idea they are closed but appeal after appeal was apparently lost the last of which was last year.

    So hard to know and frankly its a subject no one really wants to address, the loss of a range, but i'm sure we'll get an answer when its definitive.

    If we are talking about the same range, I believe they can continue to shoot shotgun there but I think rifle and pistol are gone.

    You need range authorisation for rifle and pistol.

    As far as I'm aware, you don't need range authorisation to do clay pigeon shooting.

    There are a few in Dublin, Fingal I think is still in Dublin and one in Tallaght/Firhouse for Sils and I think there are one or two indoor ranges.

    Plenty of Ranges around the country, now whether they cater for your type of shooting or are within handy driving distance, thats another thing...

    Everyone wants them on their doorstep, but fate, the council and the "Typical Irish", lets object because we can crowd ruined a lot. Sure rival range owners messed up just as many.

    I'm in Meath, it's 1.5 hours for me. Never been there, would love to go down and try the place out. Obviously by the time you reach 300m your probably parachuting .22lr rounds into the target.... But watching lots of long range shooting videos on YouTube has really peaked an interest, my own local range is 50m, which is perfectly adequate but we always want MORE!
