I prefer individual tools for different things rather than bundled packages, to me I think dedicated programs do their jobs better. Cost is a consideration of course but then are some great free alternatives for different stand alone security programs.

Kaspersky IS Version 7.0 which updates hourly.

A few people here have mentioned node32....I noticed their Antivirus is €39.99 per year and their Suite is €59.99...but if you alerady own the AV and upgrade you get the suite for €29.98 (http://www.nod32.ie/purchase/indexess.php).

I just use a Vista/XP Firewall and have a McAfeeEnterprise (Home/Work license) for XP. For my Vista laptop I use AVG Free....seems grand and the daily updates don't bother me, they only take about 2 mins

AVG is by far the best...as said by many already --> its free, its quick, its easy, it does everything itself without you really getting involved apart from initial setup which is straight forward....why make life complicated? The big name AV programs (you know who you are.....) are needless oversized giants that just take over when all you need is simple, efffortless security which AVG gives you.

Could ye recommend a VirusProtection option for a PC thats connected to the Internet with 'dial-up'. Stop sniggering now, this is the only option this person has of Net access !
Does he even need protection, probably yes, but something lite, maybe AVG ? Any opinions pls?

Downloading updates and patches for windows/AV is a royal pain on dial up. I don't know of any "lite" route except go with Linux.

NOD32 here too. Just curious as to why AVG is so far ahead on this poll? Is it purely because it's free, or does everyone think that it outperforms the rest of the paid antiviruses? Seems to contrast heavily with this one over at Wilders:

    These are excellent ...
Anti-virus = Avast - free for home use, 1 year serial (free), prog updates and virus defs are free too. Chosen not for price but for efficiency (can set a boot-time scan to scour for virus before windows starts) go to www.avast.com and look in downloads.

Malware/trojans = Ad-aware 2007 - again, great product, free to use and updates free too. Go to www.lavasoft.com and look under Ad-aware for the free version.

Just for additional thrashing, I have Spybot installed. Free but worth a donation to the programmer if you feel like it. Go to www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Have used AVG - no complaints apart from slow updates. Fine product.

I always remove Norton and McAfee as they are memory sumps and also clogged my machines with rubbish. To remove Norton properly you'll need this, un-installing just doesn't clean up afterwards. Go to http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

read up before using, I'm no expert but it worked for me.

Is that rating the free or the paid version of AVG?

I guess because it works well enough and its free and its popular.

You should at least do one of the many free online scans such as
    http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/
    or
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/
just to get a second opinion.

I've seen Norton miss so much stuff that I refuse to go near it.

For a start don't get complacent by thinking that you'd always know if you had malware(a catch all phrase for computer infections). You're missing one important type of program from your list, a decent anti-spyware program. I used to use the same product you're using now but please don't think it covers as much as you'd want it to. If you aren't using a Suite that includes an anti-spyware component than at least use a specialised program for it. Malware is getting very complicated and while antivirus programs are increasing including these elements into their software they are generally no match for a component of a Suite for it or a program for it.
The reality usually is the people who think they're really well protected and get too complacent are the ones that often get caught with some form of malware for the reasons I've already mentioned. By the way I am not trying to offend you nor give you a big lecture on computer security but I know about how these things are evolving and how different types of security programs are handing them and even I've been caught out so I just want to give you some friendly and useful advice so you don't end up with some form of malware.

Plus just avoiding the obvious tricks for being infected is only the first step, installing programs, especially freeware ones are a common form of adware and sometimes spyware and other more subtle ways.

AVG and ClamWin are the best free editions going.

Norton is over priced and a crock of sh!te... Kaspersky is the way to go if paying for Anti-Virus...

for the record i voted AVG!! :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 198 ✭✭spannerotoole

For all you non-windoze users out there, try ClamAV
Of course there is a windows version also.

For those FSF nuts, (I'm not saying you're crazy, just slightly fanatical) It's compliant with your ideals. It's Open Source, GPL and All of that.
