Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Both lovely photos but that first one is spectacular

Any chance you would share your camera settings to capture that?
Thank you for your comment. Both photos were taken using a APS-C camera so multiply the focal length of the lens by 1.5 to get the actual value.

Photo 1. 1/2500 f5.6 200mm Good light and background and quiet close.
Photo 2. 1/2500 F4 280mm includes 1.4 tele converter reduced light and dark background quiet far away :)

Collard dove and a wood pigeon ?

No, just wood pigeons, I'd say. Collared doves have a "collar" and they're "beigier" in colour.

That's an adult woodpigeon and a juvenile woodpigeon. The juv hasn't developed the white collar yet...

What a coincidence! We saw a rosy starling in the garden (Wexford) today and it caused much argument as to whether it was an albino blackbird, albino starling, or some kind of dwarf magpie.

After more than 3 months following my sparrowhawks' pair, I am pleased to report that the chicks have started fledging...I have counted 3 chicks but I suspect there could be 1 or 2 more, just going by the look of them.

I will try to confirm the number over the next few days. Not an easy task though considering that the observation is from the road and the action takes place at the top of the trees.

My sparrowhawk chicks continue growing. They are still hanging around the site where the nest is. 2xF, 1xM.

It won't be long before they leave to live their own adventures, what an amazing lock down project this has been. I have followed them nearly every day since their parents were mating and nest building. They will be missed, hopefully I will see them around in my neighborhood.

I was removing a pile of rocks from the back garden today, found 19 newts. Painstaking work, to avoid crushing them. Thankfully, they just freeze when spotted, so easy enough to lift and move them. Moved them all up to a micro-pond area, plenty of stones and wood to hide under there, no known casualties.

didn't think we had newts in ireland, learn something new everyday

I knew we had them but I've never seen one - I thought they'd be much bigger! And I also thought that was a lizard, but I can see that the shape of the head is different and the tail much more flexible.

  • Subscribers Posts: 693 ✭✭✭FlipperThePriest

I've seen them a handful of times around this area, but only ever one at a time. That is a female smooth newt. The male has a stripe down the spine, females have parallel stripes down either side. I've seen them a lot bigger than this too, maybe young?

They're used by researchers as bioindicators around lakes and streams. Apparently because they have such thin skin, they're susceptible to toxins and pollution, so if they're found in numbers, it's safe to assume the environment is fairly pollution free.

Ok just realised how stupid it was to post photos of the nest.
To point out the nest was on a wall a few metres from the back door of the house and was a quick snap in passing when no adults were about, also they're cropped so not as close as it seems.
The parent photo was also a zoomed cropped shot taken with a bluetooth shutter so the birds weren't disturbed.

Mod Note: It doesn't matter what species they are - all nesting birds are legally protected in this way in Ireland under the Wildlife Act, and this is the rule that is enforced here. If you want to discuss it further you can PM me and not post in-thread.
