Prices in restaurants have noticeably jumped since the VAT increase.

I was in La Cucina Centro on Friday, very mediocre with a not so mediocre price. I can't understand why they have a policy of making you wait to be seated while they make a big deal of finding you a place to sit when there are loads of empty tables.

I don't get the love that a lot of people have for La Cucina at all. As you say, mediocre food at not so mediocre prices and making a big deal out of seating.

    Some definite 'notions' there.

The likes of La Cucina, The Buttery, and Hook & Ladder are restaurants for the social media age. Love them or hate them, they have a formula for success, which is to target certain demographics with "instagrammable" food. Social media helps perpetuate the myth that these places are quality restaurants. IMO they are fine/grand, but their prices definitely do not reflect their food offerings.

There's no doubt LaCucina do good quality good and I'm not saying that because i know the owners, you can tell how good it is if you've had it. I'll admit it is a bit on the pricey side, when the other family restaurant up the road has similar food for slightly less money.
I don't rate the buttery, never been impressed at all by it, but that's just my opinion and I'm sure there'll be a few that disagree with me but then that's the Internet

Oh, I meant to mention I was in the Green Onion over the weekend and had a great Reuben sandwich. That place is a real gem.

La cucina for me is coffee and oreo cupcake neither of which I can fault

OH and myself ordered. They got the order totally wrong and the food was terrible.

Chips tasted like they were cooked yesterday and heated in a microwave. Burger was dry and bland. OH was probably even more unimpressed.

I usually give a place the benefit of the doubt and try it on another occasion, I will not be revisiting this, we binned everything.

On the plus side deliveroo gave a full refund in credit which we used to try Anchari, couldn't fault it. Garlic and coriander naan was amazing. Massive portions of everything.

La Cucina Centro is a rip off got a lasagne and the portion was tiny
Someone told me the Munster players eat in La Cucina regularly they must be giving them special treatment

The buttery I don't rate at all. I like La Cucina Centro for a lot of things but I felt that I didn't get value for money. I have no problem paying high prices but the quality of food must reflect that. And leaving people stand and be ignored whilst there are empty tables is just bad manners.

The green onion is a real gem.

Who's Simone when she's at home? Pasta has a lot of carbs but la cucina in Castletroy has a different menu and they obviously serve a lot of healthy options too

hi folks, are there any city centre cafes or places open on a Sunday morning about 11am serving breakfast?

  • Moderators Posts: 3,554 ✭✭✭Wise Old Elf

I'll start to sound like I'm shilling (I'm not, I just like the place), Story cafe on Denmark st does a good breakfast and crepes. Think it opens at 9 on sundays

I've been critical of La Cucina Castletroy, but I think Centro is very good. The seating policy is a bit odd, leaving people waiting when they clearly have space.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭tfitzgerald

Angry Burger II have to say. I got a delivery from here as well and I couldn't fault it. I thought the food was very good. Maybe they have different chefs on .i would have never thought of complaining to the delivery guys I would have complained to the burger crowd. I also would not have binned an order because it all tasted bland

I agree with you, probably the best value full Irish in town.
Great quality and the staff are always so bubbly and polite.
They do great French toast too!

The Aroma Cafe at the junction of Roches St and Catherine St is open Sun mornings and does very nice breakfasts and coffee.

I would rate the Buttery well ahead of La Cucina for food, as for those Freakshakes that La Cucina serves, who thought that was a good idea?

The coffee in there is nice. I'd be a little concerned about the quality of the ingredients. They were not as fresh as I would like last time I went. It's definitely budget food.

I had lunch in the Workshop today in the industrial estate, came very very highly recommended by one poster here, it was fine, the burger was overcooked and the brioche bun a bit past it’s best but it wasn’t the worst, my missus had quiche which was ok and came with nice salad,

The two girls that we encountered working there were extremely pleasant, I’d definitely try it again

I read back a few pages and sorry if I'm miss it, but what would you all consider be the best fast food( burger & chips) joint!?

Now I've tried Tony's in Raheen and it's not bad, but is there anywhere that is better?

I don't eat take out often, but since I'm going to this weekend I though I'd get the best recommended.

    Thanks.

Enzo's with their recent renovation and they have the best chipper food.

    William St right?

Yup, definitely Enzo's. Garlic & cheese chip, battered sausage, onion rings and a can of coke for me please :D

I am not a chipper man at all but I had a plate of chip in there recently for a snack and they were fantastic. As a proud Galwegian in exile, McDonaghs would have been proud!

Was in there over Christmas and thought the food was decent but the wait times and general service was poor...took an age for food to arrive and extra drinks that were ordered during the meal never arrived but were on our bill at the end. To me it seemed like there wasn't enough staff on the floor and way too many behind the bar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭tfitzgerald

I was there just before Christmas as well. I found the same. Very slow service. But I enjoyed the food. I thought the staff were excellent. They showed us the new ballroom and it's lighting system. It is very impressive

Am I missing something about Hi-Way in Dooradoyle? Highly rated on Trip Advisor, but completely bland & unimpressive food at the price of a good restaurant.

That's because it is just that, fine. I wouldn't be going there above Verona or the Westward Ho.

Westward Ho is nice. I don't like Verona personally.

Usually in Russell’s every Sunday for lunch, the beef is excellent, the bacon & cabbage also very good, tend to stick with those, think it’s €13 or thereabouts for a main course

Ah okay, might avoid it so!

While I'm here, I know this is Limerick and not Clare, but since it's close by, has anyone ever been to Carrygerry house near Shannon. Heard someone at work talking about it. Food is supposed to be lovely, but I'd never even heard of it before.

I've been there for a wedding and christening and couldn't fault it. Staff and food were excellent.

Any one recommend a nice area with a few restaurants in I could walk with the mrs and we chose at the time. Off to limerick for the first time with the mrs and slightly worried reading some of these posts on here as I’m not Irish and she’s not white so don’t want random grief or abuse

I wouldn't worry about it, never mind what you've heard about Limerick's bad reputation from people whom most likely have never even visited the city.

What kind of food do you like? Are you looking for high end or more reasonabky priced fare? Are you planning on drinks afterwards?

We don’t drink but we do eat almost everything, maybe 30/40 quid each, give or take.

The French Table is very good as is Freddie's bistro. The Cornstore tends to be very good too but I'd rather the French Table or Freddies. My favourite restaurant in Limerick is La Piccola Italia (not to be confused with the very good La Piccola pizzeria next door) Have a look on Tripadvisor and ask on here before you book.

You'll always get mixed views on LPI! I personally love it, so does both sides of my family. You always know you're going to get good food and the menu never changes so they know what they're doing. Wine is alleys excellent.

If you don't have breakfast planned and even if your hotel includes it, go down to The Green Onion. The fry is amazing, real sausages and rashers etc rather than generic rubbish bought in from Pallas. Pancakes are very good too I was told. Great spot I must say..
