For the third time, I decided to have a crack at getting into Fallout 4 again last night, I think I saw mentions of it here in the last few days and the seed was planted in my head.

I just can’t warm to it, at all. First time I played it was at launch and was the furthest I ever got but still never even made it to Diamond City. Second time was a couple of years ago with a build I found online but got stuck and dropped it even earlier. Now I started with a VATS build and just finished off the Deathclaw in Concord right at the beginning and I’m about to delete the game already. I want to love it, I really do, but it feels more like work than enjoyment.

About to dive in Metro Exodus now, never touched the series before so hoping it’ll be up my street.

I'm really trying to enjoy Infamous 2 but it's so disappointing because I loved Infamous: Second Son. After all the complaints from fans about how "Delsin sucks" and how Infamous 2 was the best one it really does not live up to the hype. Everything it does Second Son does far better. The concept is still there but it's executed poorly.

The lead character, Cole, doesn't feel like a superhero, he feels like a chump as he's not able to withstand much damage and doesn't have the fluid movement that Delsin had to evade attacks. There are so many enemies and the only ability that helps with crowd control is useless as they get back up far too quickly for you to do a ground takedown; it's not fun.

The Karma system is poorly implemented and explained and trying to do a good karma playthrough is more of a chore than anything. Civilians get in the way and pretty much all of Cole's abilities have massive area of effect like the aforementioned crowd control one, so civilians end up getting hurt and enemies previously subdued non lethally end up being executed. I've unlocked a skill that lets civilians take almost no damage from attacks but that should have been the default tbh. I feel like the game just wants me to play as a super villain and the karma system is just a tack-on. Melee combat sucks too - you often swing wildly and end up hitting either the air or a civilian who has no business standing there.

It's weird because everything around the combat is good such as the shard collectibles and how they extend your energy, the way you go about upgrading your powers through tasks, the side and story missions etc but then the combat starts and I groan. The enemy designs are quite lazy as well. In Second Son there was a hierarchy of your basic bitch grunts all the way up to the different types of gravel wielding badasses who gave as good as you did being that they were "freaks hunting freaks". These weird alien monster thingies here feel totally out of place.

It's definitely not the worst game I've played this year but this is the least amount of fun I've had since Days Gone (which is the worst game i've played this year). I'm also streaming it on PSNow and the resolution is horrible which is affecting my enjoyment somewhat.

I think your problem was playing Second Son first. It did take all the good ideas from 1 & 2 and made them better, but the story and brightness of SS put me off. The slightly darker story of 1 &2 was better, and the complains you have regarding the combat is just a product of the time and hardware. Plus 3 years compared to the 2 between the first 2.

I couldn't warm to SS and never finished it, and I platinum'd the first 2.

Recently completed Red Dead Redemption 2 after 62 hours, I didn't particularly enjoy the epilogue at all. Will probably never ever replay it 😅

Started Spider Man last night though and so far the game is a blast, looks great too in the Performance RT mode !

That epilogue needed to be at least 70% shorter.

That entire game needed to be at least 70% shorter 👀

Recently bought a PS5. Just about to start Ghost of Tsushima.

Nope, it's nowt to do with playing Second Son first. Firstly, Second Son is basically a soft reboot that doesn't seem to connect to Cole from what I remember so it's not like I played a direct sequel first. Also, it's expected that later instalments in a series improve on their predecessors (not always but it's expected) so I'm always very forgiving and mindful of that. And tbh a good game is a good game no matter what order you play it in. I played Uncharted 4 first but still like Uncharted 1 and 2.

The issues with Infamous 2 have nothing to with being a product of the times. Stuff like enemies being spongey and taking forever to go down is just poor game design to be frank. I don't necessarily equate tone with quality but I actually like the open world of Infamous 2 (I also like that the camera is a bit more pulled in as well) . I pretty much like everything outside of the combat. The combat just feels like its more geared towards an evil karma playthrough. It's weird that the game doesn't distinguish between already subdued enemies so whenever you use a crowd control ability (forgot what it's called but it but knocks all enemies down) it will just execute those on the ground. The thing is, you need that ability because you take damage hard and fast and there isn't much cover. Meanwhile civilians are constantly getting in the way. Just how are you supposed to take down the guards escorting the captured civilians in the good karma side activities if the civilian is literally surrounded by guards? They're bound to get hit or you're bound to die making sure they don't. It just feels ill balanced and broken.

Anyway, I've moved on to Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter and I'm loving it. I think the Sherlock series is fast becoming my "comfort game". Can't wait for the open world one later this year.

Trying Horizon Zero Dawn for the second time, but really struggling to get into it. Something about it just not clicking with me.

About half way through FFVII Remake. While obviously disappointing it's not the full game per se, they've really done a good job of extending the story, without too much padding, and really getting more detail into what is a very simple plot. Graphics are stunning in places, but some textures seem muddy, though I imagine the PS5 version shines here.

Same, bought it a while back and traded it in, couldnt get into it, got it again when it was free and still cannot get into it.

Playing FFX remaster again, better than VII IMO, tempted to play X-2 after but i dont wanna spoil the experience

I think it's cause Aloy is so wooden. In fact all the characters are wooden, and the story so far is a bit meh, doesn't really grip me for wanting to advance the plot. I think I'm like level 13ish.

Persona 5 - not really enjoying it. Infiltrating the first part of the game and it's just battle after battle. Very repetitive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

I personally loved the plot of Horizon. It does take a bit to get going but when you get into the creation of the robots etc, it's very interesting and well put together. There's a lot of "data points" to pick up which really do enhance it.

Playing it myself now and its so enjoyable. Focusing on the side missions before finishing the story and then it'll be on to the DLC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,307 ✭✭✭The Phantom Pain

Yeah, Horizon Zero Dawn takes a while to get going but once it does it becomes unstoppable. Really great story.

They've released the 60 fps version for PS5 now. I've had the Frozen Wilds DLC for ages but never touched it. I also haven't done a new game plus run. Now with the recent patch I'm glad I didn't as I can experience it all again in 60 fps.

I agree fully. Only picked up a PS4 a few months ago and this is one of the games I've enjoyed most. Great, deep plot. Love some of the action set pieces too. It rekindled my love for AAA type games

Frozen wilds is a fantastic example of dlc done very well, with the update you're in for a treat

I just finished a Platinum replay of the game recently as well as doing the DLC for the first time. As said, the DLC is excellent, and could lead in nicely to the sequel.

I think I will replay it in early January, been 4 years since I played it last.

Just played Psychonauts Rhombus of Ruin last night. Enjoyable short game.

The Deathloop previews this week got me hyped so I've been playing The Forgotten City and loving it.

Quest log is filling up all over the place, lots of interesting NPCs to talk to, enjoying the puzzle of solving their problems without committing any sins (even though there's temptation at every corner), the way each NPC's dilemma connects with one another, the mystery of the whispering from the statues and who "Karen" is. Then there's the way the game handles the loop which so far has not irritated me as it seems to find ways to shortcut previous tasks. Interested to see where it goes. I hope it sticks the landing.

    The Room VR.

If you've played one of these Room games before, it's more of the same but with more turning, pulling and pushing of handles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭bdmc16

Does it feel like a major improvement . Worth playing through again for ?

  • Administrators Posts: 55,667 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

It's noticeable in that it's much smoother, but there's no actual visual quality upgrade, it's exactly the same as it was.

Just finished Sackboy. Very good platformer, up there with SM3DW IMO.

Recently finished The Outer Wilds. An absolute gem of a game, probably not for everyone but I absolutely adored it.

Just started into the GOT Iki Island expansion. Good so far, but early days. The PS5 enhancements are very good though.

Looking forward to returning to Horizon for DLC now that it has a 60FPS patch. I love the game and I understand why people say the characters are wooden. I think the main problem is the facial animations make everyone look like they are on Xanax or something. The story is superb though, and the combat is very enjoyable.

Not played any games in that last 10 years or so except for a few months of fifa until i got the PS5.

God of war -> loved it 9/10 (very near Platinum, just the crows left when i ever go back to it)

The Last of Us -> Meh, probably due to the high expectations and the fact its a 2013 game. 7/10

    Days Gone -> 8.5/10 Platinum

Battlefield 1 -> 6/10 Think prob because not 1 main storyline with main character is why i didn't enjoy this as much as others.

Ratchet and Clank 2016 - Enjoyed it more then expected 8/10

Rocket league -> Addictive but i played with default view so find it hard to change to the view meant to use. Not sure i want to put in the hours it would take to see if i could get much better

Horizon zero -> Enjoyable storyline once you get into it. 8.5/10

Not sure what will go with next, probably A Plague Tale or Control.

Finished Far Cry 5. Wasn’t expecting that ending but I enjoyed the game. Moved on to the DLC and completed Hours of Darkness already. Just moved on to Lost on Mars today.
