Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How probable will it be that martial law is declared?

"The current Irish Constitution allows for martial law if the government declares a state of emergency, however capital punishment is prohibited in all circumstances, including a state of emergency."

Seems likely we'll declare a state of emergency based on the prep going on. Any suggestions on top tips for surviving martial law? I guess don't answer back is up there.

Rural pubs have operated a social distance policy for years or at least their patrons have

Public transport is more a societal need than drinking..

Can’t cover every possible area. It’s about being logical, and using common sense.

But unfortunately, what we’ve all learned from this crisis, is that common sense is far from common.

For reasons seemingly unknown to the staff themselves OBriens off licences have directed stores to shut at 8pm tonight. Wonder what they know that we don't?

As others have said I'd assume that we have 2000 with the virus here now especially with the returnees from Cheltenham and many Italians before the close down last Friday.

That is one in every 2500 thousand. Doesn't sound like much but in a city how many people will you cross paths with in any day 400, 500? So give that a week and you may have been exposed.

Try to avoid indoor places with still air or being close to anyone for any length of time.

Buses, trains and dart should have disinfectant sprays on and people well spaced apart or they aren't safe from now on.

Cash is also a vector and should be avoided too,

Cans from an offie? No problem. You're drinking at home therefore limiting social interaction.

Consistently moaning about not being able to go for a few scoops at the boozer for a few days? You probably need to see someone after this crisis is over.

I'm genuinely amazed at how little people can go without drink. I never thought Ireland had such a drink problem. Very sad. People seem to need drink the way they need food.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,824 ✭✭✭ShooterSF

It’s not that simple. So do the staff of these pubs. They need money to pay utilities.

I know a lot of staff in my town. I am a bartender of 17 years and any I have talked to feel the same so.... I. DO. NOT. WANT. MONEY. IN. EXCHANGE. FOR. PUTTING. LIVES. AT. RISK.

    But thanks for your concern.

Public transport should be less clogged now less people need to go to work with the closures. The alco's will probably be having vigils outside their beloved pub or crying into pillows so shouldnt be on it either.

I doubt the panic about the procurement of alcohol applies to the majority of people, but realistically a couple of beers or a few glasses of wine in the bunker might help a lot of people chill out in a confinement period.

Same all over the world really. Mass gatherings in pubs is a totally different matter, and will be stopped PDQ.

Will we go as far as Spain?

"The streets are deserted. Shops, restaurants, tourist sites and many hotels are boarded up as people are told they are only allowed to leave their homes for essentials.

Police cars slowly circle the empty streets, stopping occasionally to usher people on.

One group of bemused tourists I saw eating sandwiches in the sunshine of a square were swiftly told to leave, as police reminded them that it's "forbidden" to sit or stand in the streets."

    This exactly.

But you will still have many moaning about how the Gov aren't doing enough, they should do this, that etc.

Gov can't do this on their own. They need ALL OF US to help stop this virus. And we all can help.

I honestly think Simon Harris and probably quite a few other Irish ministers for health have been given impossible tasks over the years. In business the role would be called 'a widow maker' as it's basically a job nobody can succeed in. The ones who escaped unharmed tended to either disappear out of the job very quickly, or back some positive public health measure like the Smoking Ban.

I'm not saying the policies have been great or that the reforms have been radical enough to make a big difference, but they've been generally very well intended and I honestly think the comparisons with right wing Tories and all of that is a bit nonsensical. The system is a complex mess and has been for decades and needs radical reform.

All I could say is right now, he's doing a his best. He's communicating facts well and he's taken some pretty seriously tough decisions in the face of what are often very powerful vested interests and we haven't melted down into some kind of chaotic mess, as is apparently happening in some of our peer countries.

If out of this horror, a true public health system somehow emerges at least that will be something we can chalk down to the legacy of this nightmare.

Sometimes a crisis like this can be what changes a system. It's how the NHS emerged after WWII.

On a personal level though, I wish him well and hope we all succeed in this, no matter what nuance of Irish politics we're looking in at this from, we're all on the same page when its comes to this.

They are handling this exceptionally well, when you compare them to the inept crowd across both sides of our shores they absolutely fantastic. Many more lives will be saved dye to their extraordinary decision making. Well done to each and everyone of our great leaders.

I had to drive from Navan to Dublin to drop some supplies into my father in law who can’t get out much. He really needed it.

What shocked me was the amount of people out and about. People out walking, people stopped chatting, people going into shopping centres not for the supermarket, people going barbers etc. Kids out and about.

Almost all of it appeared to be very unnecessary!

What’s the point in closing anything if people just can’t stay in?

We need a much harsher message from our government and have choices taken away from us.
I've no problem with people out walking stocking up on Vitamin D and getting some fresh air to build immunity, feel better about their situation.
Large groups of Kids playing together or adults going to the pub etc, doesn't really need much comment.
