Bit of a nip in Tralee and very hazy. But really nice nonetheless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,174 ✭✭✭pauldry

Never really cleared completely in Sligo town. Got to 19.7c but could see the blue sky up towards Donegal where it was not as cloudy and it got to 21.9c here.

    Thats it for this spell.

Still a chill even with high temperatures. Must be the low humidity.

Lovely calm, quiet monochrome morning. Pleasantly mild. A pity re the "hordes of Midian"! Gentle weather. Bliss

Amazing sunrise in Dublin airport this morning. Always has spectacular sunsets and sunrises as it's slightly elevated from the surrounding city and countryside.

Love these type of crisp early summer mornings, 7c.

Still only 2mm rain in Sligo town after 15 days of May.

Cracks have appeared in the soil and grass turning yellow at borders.

    do you use tap water?

my borders are parched but I'm loathe to use the tap water - running out of options. My water butt is long empty.

we are ok in Cork City, think there was a shower during the night because neighbours extension roof has puddles on it now :p.

Everything still green besides or two bits of grass near the footpaths, loving it though. Netweather shows a shower coming though.

Overcast today but still mild thankfully

Overcast today but still mild thankfully

I think describing what's arriving into much of Cork now could be described as being more than a shower.

For chemical concern or conservation? Yes but I am very economical with water . would rather my plants drank than I drink.. wash by hand anyway and use that etc etc No hose pipe just a bucket.

both really... might take drastic action and fill up the water butt with water from the mains.. let the chlorine evaporate over a day or so

This is a comparison of all Mays' monthly mean temperatures at selected Irish stations back to 1958 and including 2019 up to the 15th.

The overall May 2019 mean temperature when you average these stations up to the 15th is 9.5c, which is comparable with the first half of May 2010 and May 2013. The last time Ireland had a whole May that sustained this level of cooler than average conditions was 1996 with a monthly mean temperature of 9.2c using these stations' data.

The coldest May since 1996 was May 2015 with a monthly mean temperature of 10.1c followed by May 2013 with 10.3c, May 2005 with 10.7c and May 2010 with 10.9c. May 1979 was easily the coldest with a monthly mean temperature of 8.9c, continuing on from a long bitterly cold Winter that year.

May 1990 (12.7c) and May 2008 (13.1c) stand out as the warmest on record especially 2008 though May 2017 (12.4c) and May 1992 (12.6c) were quite remarkable too.

    raziweX.png

Wonder how these figures compare to the IMT.

Data from CSO and Met Éireann.

lol.. I had never thought of that; thank you,. No butt here but I can use containers..

But then so rare we get these times and the plants do not seem to mind..

We have had a small sprinkling..

Funny that May seems totally unaffected by climate change in comparison to say our Winters or Summers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

A mild, moist and MIDGY morning... went out to admire the mild part and was attacked violently and sneakily by the hordes of Midian itch, scratch, itch.

A dry and sunny start to the day in Castlebar at 13 degrees. Looks like some rain crossing the irish sea will move into eastern areas, not mentioned on any met eireann broadcast yesterday.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭Kutebride

    Cold. Light rain Meath.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,174 ✭✭✭pauldry

Think Met Eireann forecast typers have been on AL the past two days.

    Forecasts very lax.

TV ones fine but the one on site is not what standard they normally have.

    Still at 2.5mm in Sligo

Rains missed us yesterday while Strandhill had a downpour.

Not so lucky this evening in all likelihood

Even more interesting is the fact that Markree had 18mm of rain yesterday....prob Standhill downpour too

    So Sligo Microclimate May

    Markree 26mm for month
    Sligo town 2.5mm

raining now in Meath, feeling rather chilly too. So far the highest temperature we've had this month at Dunshaughlin is only 18C (last Monday), I am not sure if we'll get any higher than that for the remainder of this month. We had 23C here in April during the warm spell, so this May appears to be a rather cool one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,457 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Forecast for Dublin today is badly off.

Hazy sunshine with passing clouds.. instead it's 11 degrees, blanket cloud and rain.

Lots of rain on the radar for East and south east. This was being forecast earlier the week then seemed to disappear from the forecasts but its happening now! Hence my confusion at the rain and not being prepared despite keeping close eye on forecasts.

Amazing differences around the country going by the reports above. Another glorious day in east Galway with warm sunshine and beach weather skies. 18c currently and still waiting for some rain, with totals this May so far still only on 1.5mm.

My 'daily weather report' for this month so far showing rainfall totals. Not even sure where the 0.1mm came from on the 10th and most likely an erroneous reading.

2.3mm at Claremorris up to May 16th.

Its top 5 driest Mays on record:

    1. May 1991 - 8.8mm
    2. May 1978 - 16.7mm
    3. May 1950 - 17.1mm
    4. May 1975 - 17.6mm
    5. May 1977 - 19.9mm

The only other May that Claremorris has recorded 5.0mm or under of rainfall during the first half (1st-16th) was May 1996 with 1.3mm. This was another notable cold May as shown in the graph I posted yesterday and is the second coldest on record for many Irish stations behind May 1979.

    Data from Met Éireann.

West will get rain in next few hours as will Sligo

    How much though

A cold May this year usually means glorious Summer?

Prob warm and thundery instead. We are die that kind of weather.

Just got a surprise looking at the radar on met eireann, not a drop of rain in my area of meath, very cloudy though

Downstairs heating was switched off nearly two weeks ago, upstairs was switched off about a month ago. Any sunshine coming in the windows is now enough to keep the house warm. The main living area is currently at 22.8c, a bit lower than the past few days owing to the cooler weather and breeze but still comfortable.

Having to open the bedroom window for a half hour or so most evenings as upstairs is a warmer again. I'm seriously thinking about getting a small AC unit (a proper one with refrigerant, not one of those cheap ones that you put ice into) for the bedroom as most summers involve extremely warm nights at times. Leaving the windows open all night often results in midge bites as I also ditch the bed sheets during most of the summer. A 30 minute blast of AC in the bedroom before bed would make it nice and cool and allow me to have a (3.5 tog) duvet over me, for comfort.

Anyway, I'm digressing......13.2c in North Kildare, overnight low of 11.0c. Light to moderate rain has cleared to the west. Overcast (but quite bright) at the moment but next batch of rain will arrive soon. Garden really needs it as I've a fair few fairly new plants which need regular watering until they get established. Also have 5 small (for now) Eucalyptus trees planted and they can't dry out. Water butt almost empty but the rain today will not fill it to a great degree.

Have to head to the office in Dublin for a couple of hours.....I shall meet the rain on the way.

No fuel left here and I would not on principle light fires in May! Ah well,, warm enough indoors but parky out now the sun has gone and the rain is coming in on a chilly breeze ...

will be interesting to see how cool this month turns out if the next 2 weeks is mostly cool. It's been a fairly cool and often cold month. The short to medium range models are pointing towards daytime temperatures mostly in the low to middle teens up to the end of the month.

Highest temps at my location so far this year:

    January - 12C
    February - 17C
    March - 18C
    April - 23C
    May - 18C (so far)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,021 ✭✭✭Artane2002

Today wasn't great or anything but it wasn't as bad as I expected just by looking at the radar. Since last winter, whenever Met Éireann mentioned something like "showers and an easterly breeze", we usually ended up with a full wet day here.
