Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm thinking about pulling out a big enough sum out of the stock market, what's the return on pb like? Seems to be pretty dire based on this thread. Current interest rates are dire and don't want to switch bank to get a better rate

    Depends if lucky.

I'm currently sitting at 0.15% return for 2019.

Whereas have less in stocks and had a good 16-19% surge this year.

Ouch. .15 - better off in the bank although there's dirt involved I suppose

None of the banks are giving anything more than 0.21%, and usually a lot less for higher amounts. From which you lose 35% if you are liable for DIRT. The two Credit Unions I know about have declared a dividend for 2019 of 0.25% and 0.15%, again before DIRT.

There are bank products which pay more, but they are fixed term or regular savings, not directly comparable with the conditions which apply to Prize Bonds.

State savings - Solidarity bond pays 1.5% AER and 16% after 10 years tax free.
Take it out when want with any interest earned.

Don't see the attraction of PBs.

Is that just inline with the ever all time high stock market, or would you have made a better return if it was in the red?

Hi all, I have recently began following this thread after asking a question over at r/ireland on Reddit.

Not sure if this has been posted before but back in November 2018, I asked the Prize Bonds team how many Prize Bonds were entered into the draw each week and I got the following reply:

There is currently a 3.7 Billion fund at the moment. There is approximately 540 million units going into the draw every Friday.:o

So you can work out your odds of winning based on the number of bonds that you own.

I have also emailed to get an updated figure so I will post an update when I have one.

Another, if infrequent, 'Killarney' envelope on it's way with €50. :)

€50 win 6/12/2019, PB bought January 2006, first win since 18/10/2019.

Winnings to date (no winning records kept pre 2005) €1,675 on €9,900 worth of PB's bought monthly over a 21 year period plus €20,000 bought in Feb 2016 (five €50 on the February 2016 purchase).

    Winnings 2011 €75
    Winnings 2012 €150
    Winnings 2013 €200
    Winnings 2014 €100
    Winnings 2015 Zero
    Winnings 2016 €200
    Winnings 2017 €250
    Winnings 2018 Nada, Zilch, SFA
Winnings 2019 €250 (and counting - could be my best year ever)

    Christmas bonus next week?

The Annual Report for 2018 says the fund at the end of the year was €3.415 billion. That would be approx 546 million bonds. The ones from before the Euro are valued at €6.35 each.

In January this year each draw had 4516 €50 prizes. This month it will be 4940 up from 4899 in November. That indicates an increase of 9.4% during the year, which would bring the fund up to approx €3.736 billion, equivalent of about 598 million bonds.

The part of the prize fund allocated to €50 prizes will give a return of 0.35% with average luck, 7 wins per year from €100,000 in bonds.

That would be an easier way than emailing them. They have replied to me to say that there is currently 3.625* billion in the fund and 579,610,441 units go into the draw each week.

*Their initial reply said that there was 36 billion in the fund but upon questioning, this was revealed as a typo.

You can buy in the Post Office or Online here https://www.statesavings.ie/prize-bonds.

The winning bonds for each draw are posted on the above website on Fridays. If you create an account you can enter your Bond numbers and check if they have won with a click.

They can be withdrawn with 7 days notice.

..but only after a min. of 3 months i think (I called them last week to check and see how long prize bonds needed to be held before they could be cashed in again..they said 3 months)

400 on 100k annual income is a lot more than many people who gambled on Irish Oil Exploration stocks ended up with in the past (Bula, Providence, etc). Not to mention the fact they also lost 100% of their capital. Oil exploration stocks which by their nature have a reasonable chance of 100% capital loss may have a place in a broad portfolio. They certainly are not the place for somebody’s mortgage savings !

I didn’t know it was savings for a mortgage !
I thought it spare money ! Worth the gamble on the prize bonds wouldn’t have interest earned anyway without investing long term !
