Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yes, they are two separate cars.

The first one had a load of sales patter about the "gorgeous" interior. The second one was of an original, less rank, interior. I was commenting that the first one seemed it was a good car prior to when it had it's "gorgeous" interior installed.

Saw this on Car and Classic today. I think this is really cool (apart from the silly wheels) and reminded me of the 1800 pick up I used to drive when I worked at Longbridge.

Y'know in the event of a lotto win(if I ever played it), or a dotty ancient relative left me squillions in their will, one of those type Ferrari's would be about the most appealing(or a 308 which is the Ferrari in my head). When new the four seaters were usually more expensive than the two and what Enzo himself drove. Apparently pretty reliable too, if driven regularly.

What always puzzled me with the engines are the two oil filters. Sure looks great and all(cos Italian), but how are you supposed to pre fill them with oil when you do an oil change and surely they're going to have an issue with an air lock at the top so wouldn't fill fully anyway(cos Italian? To have such problems to worry about. :D

Oh and I'm old enough to recall when they could be had for that money...

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I had a dream of travelling the continent with my family in a four seater Ferrari like that, or a 412.

That dream was crushed when the missis insisted on a third child. Nothing at all to do with me not being able to afford even a barn find Mondial.

I've always been a fan of 2+2 Ferraris. The least popular, the least desirable, so the cheapest. I remember the Mondial and 412 going second hand for peanuts in the early 00s

Here's the '82 412 originally bought by prince Bernhard of the Netherlands (married to the Dutch queen)

    e7b0493237.jpg

He had a string of 2+2 Ferraris, the one previous to this one was a 365GT 2+2 and the one after a 456GT

And the one before the 365 was a '64 500 Superfast Speciale. That man enjoyed life. Had a bottle of Heineken with his breakfast everyday. Had 6 daughters with 3 women (one wife and two mistresses). Lived to be 93. Respect :D

Prince Bernhard was a bit of a character allright. He was also called the "playboy prince" and he had a habit of using any opportunity that came up to his advantage. Yes, he was a charmer, and lived life to the full, but his reputation was seriously tarnished when in the mid seventies he was found out to having accepted large sums of money from the US airplane company Lockheed suggesting to the company that as influencial person within the Dutch army/airforce he could arrange large orders for Lockheed. No proof was ever found that he actually had influenced the airforce, but he had received money from Lockheed and he was punished by a "uniform ban". He was never allowed to wear the official Dutch army/airforce uniform anymore in public (which was very painful for him, because he would almost always wear his uniform on public occasions).
He may have rumoured to have drank a bottle of Heineken at breakfast every morning, but in fact Freddy Heineken, the Dutch owner of the Beer company, didn't actually quite like the prince, because he claimed to have told several people that he was always annoyed with him that he nevery paid for anything. He came to lunch in Heineken's hotel in Amsterdam with large crowds numerous times and always left without paying, assuming that him being royalty he never needed to...

He had a string of Ferrari's and he in fact was a personal friend of Enzo Ferrari. That is why he was allowed to make special modifications on any of the cars he owned.
His friendship with Enzo started when he bought a 2nd hand RHD Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe Ghia chassis number 0139E
    Resize%20of%20012%200139%20E%20212%20Inter%20Vignale%20foto%20archief%20Jean%20Louis%20Bezemer.jpg?itok=AJRSOaXM
When Enzo heard about this purchase, he contacted the prince and offered to "upgrade" the car for him. The prince drove to Italy with a friend and he got a 212 Inter Coupe Pinin Farina instead. To avoid hefty duties and taxes on new cars, the two found out a way to avoid this and Enzo ordered to have the chassis number switched around! so that the new car could be imported as a 2nd hand car without paying import duties taxes. That car got the legendary reg number AA 13 with AA reserved for the Royal Family, and 13 his lucky number. This registration followed him on several cars.
    Ferrari%2BInter%2BPrins%2BBernhard.JPG
Then two years later he had yet another upgrade, this time to a 250 Europa GT Coupe Pinin Farina, whereby Enzo and Bernhard performed the same chassis number swap, so that the car now currently has the chassis number 0139E, meaning that the 0139E chassis number was used on 3 different cars...
    image2716a87703ae209097dc9bc9296ed72f-478523.jpg
In 1957 he really went to town and got himself a 250 GT Speciale Coupe Pinin Farina
    Pininfarina_Ferrari_250_GT_Coupe_Speciale_Bernhard_0725GT_1957_07.jpg
followed by another 61 250 GT Speciale Coupe Pinin Farina. With this car, his "dark green" fetish started out as he ordered it in a very unusual Dark Green colour, which was specifically granted by Enzo as it wasn;t an original Ferrari colour.
    SFA001003362.jpg
In 1964 he went for the 500 Superfast, which was only offered for sale to the rich and famous and those who could genuinely afford it. The prince had his car ordered again in a very rare Pine Verde, and also he wasn't too keen on the big 5,0 litre engine and asked if Enzo could slot in the more refined 4,0 litre lump instead, which was obviously not a problem as it is now the only 500 superfast with a 4.0 litre engine. This car is currently on display in the Louwman museum in the Netherlands.
    5908726571_e9c9f5fbc6_b.jpg

    From then on he went through a 365 GTC/4, a 365 GT4 2+2
    168a76fb2732895ed7b98e8099f3ac34.jpg
    a 400i, a 412 and finally a 456GT and a 456 M GT, all in Dark Green.

    He passed away in 2004

    It's a fantastic story Paul.

I photographed the 212 Inter in Essen last year, it is totally original condition.
It doesn't look as though it has ever been resprayed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 827 ✭✭✭PaulK_CCI

Yes Kevin, that car was his 2nd car, the 212 Inter Coupe Pinin Farina and is the car that went through 3 identity changes :).
Left the factory as SN 0269EU and was then re-issued with 0139E. (The original 212 Inter Coupe Vignale got the number 0269EU). When the prince traded up to the 250 Europa GT Pinin Farina, that car left the factory as 0387GT, but got the number 0139E, which it currently still has.
The car in your pictures got the number 0387GT from the 250 Europa in 1955.

This car had been dormant in the states from 1961 onwards and when it was brought back to Holland in 2006 the owner decided he did not want a Pebbles Beach restoration and made the car driveable, without going overboard. That is probably why the car feels unrestored and nicely patinated. Note the bumpers have been replaced because they were too badly worn and they weren't original in the first place (possibly from an Aurelia...).
It was sold at an auction in 2008 for 350.000 euro's (which was considerably less than the estimate) and remained unsold at an auction in 2015 where it didn't fetch the reserve price of 1,7 million

Moved from the "This weeks Classic foreign bargains that i'm not buying" thread because it's not Irish.

I note this thread hasn't been used for a year-and-a-half. It got divided into Irish/Foreign because some lads get sea-sick. :P

Now less of the boldness and post them in the appropriate thread! Any stray posts just report them to be moved. Thanks.

I've FTFY because no amount of paperwork negates the fact that all CXs will be wallet emptiers. :)

    Edit to add:

If you look up the MOT, it is currently MOT'd until 16/08/2019.

You must have looked at the gov.uk Vehicle Enquiry Service, which isn't updated as often. ;)

Yes, I used https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status but I will be using your one from now on, thanks for sharing!

You mean you used https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ ? (Just checked your link and that's where it redirects to)

That tells you a slightly different set of details to the MOT check site: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

Use both, usually they match, but I don't know exactly why in this case it is that far out of sync.

If the floorpan is from a 2003 car, then it would/should be registered here as a 2003, not a 1973. If the V5 says 1973 SAAB 96 then I doubt you would be checked on it here.

I also think that it should be registered in the UK according to their rules as a 2003, but I stand corrected on that.

Looks slightly cool, but also a bit of an abomination. If they kept the original dashboard and customised the gearshift gate to accomodate the auto then it would look a lot better IMO.

If you're looking to blend old and new then I prefer this: Acadiane meets F355

This looks good and if all the blurb checks out then it's an excellent price for a V8 R107. Liking the stereo.

    1982 380SL £12,950

For sale is our 1982 380SL. The car is diamond blue with full black leather. It even has the original Becker radio cassette.

It was first registered in Edinburgh in November 1982 by a Mr John Menzies - he was a particularly famous chap at this time as he owned one of the largest chain of bookshops/newsagents in the UK.

It had a couple of other owners and then in 1987 (with 43000 miles and a full Mercedes History) it was bought by a chap in Fife called Ian Chrystal who owned a fuel supply company. It was used by him and his wife for the next 20 years and always garaged and serviced by his own mechanics. There are some receipts for this - most notably 2 large Mercedes invoices in 2002 when he had the car overhauled for a European trip totalling almost £3000. The mileage at this time was 97153. He drove around 1500 miles around Europe in it and then it was garaged and hardly used again by him.

Sadly Mr Chrystal died in 2009 and the car was sold to a famous Scottish artist called Jack Vettriano (http://www.jackvettriano.com/). At this point the car had covered around 99500 miles. He sent it to well regarded Scottish body shop and garage - Prestige Car Bodies - give them a call and they will happily answer questions) who had the car in their workshop for over 6 months where the thing was completely stripped, re-built and completely painted, including new wings, chrome and pretty much everything that needed to be done was done. Even the hardtop was re-painted.

I have spoken with the owner of the company who knows the car well and he confirmed that the bill came to around £9000 - I have no copy of this invoice, but he has said he could possibly dig it out if required and they do have photographic evidence of the restoration. The car was also serviced at this time.

The artist owner took delivery, drove the car for 20 miles and then put it under a car cover in dry storage and never drove it again! Since owning the car I have done around 800 trouble free miles in it. The steering has been laser aligned and tyres balanced, the gearbox oil has been changed and it has been waxed twice and never driven in the rain.

The car is taxed and mot'd until May 2019 with 2 advisories. One problem with the car is that the ariel has to be put up manually. There is exactly zero rust on the vehicle. It has 2 keys and both fit every lock.
