kennedys at tara street tops the list imo,
ice bar on parnell st has served me well too.

im not as picky as i used to be,
haivng come to the realisation that almost all pints of guinness will be utter ****e.
i prefer the cans these days tbh.

Really? That's just around the corner from me. Was in there once, but didn't try the Guinness. I must remedy that. Doesn't look like somewhere you'd get a decent pint.

I meant to say in my previous post, I've been in the Storehouse, and was hugely underimpressed by the Guinness. Oh and, I also thought the barstaff might tell the tourists to wait untill it's settled.. It's just not right drinking Guinness while it's settling..

Mulligan's on Poolbeg St is usually excellent. Honourable mention to O'Donoghue's on the Emmet Road in Inchicore too. Looking forward to a few there on Friday night. :)

Outside Dublin, best I've had is in the Brandywell Bar in Derry, just down the road from Derry City's ground. Absolutely fantastic pint!!! Looking forward to a few there next Monday! :D

i know, its an unusual one alright.
chinese barmen, neon lights, a patio out the back and all this hidden behind a dodgy looking offo,
yet they easily do one of the best pints in the north city.
or did on the occasions i visited.

Guinness in the Storehouse is not as good as I'd hope.

Best pint - Sandymount House (Ryan's) - in Sandymount. Really, really consistent, creamy, flavoursome.

The worst pint I've ever had was in the old sports bar in UCD.

Madigan's in Donnybrook isn't bad either.

Toales in Dundalk. Haven't been to too many in Dublin so I can't really compare. Reading on this thread that someone from America were served pitchers of it. Good God. A mate of mine was on holidays and was in an Irish bar. The barman was filling the pint to the top and throwing it out. When he asked my mate, he realised he was Irish and served it properly. Asked him why he gave it out to the other people the other way he said "They don't know the ****ing difference."

I was very disappointed with it too. I have had about 10 pints there on about 4-5 different occasions, all were very bland and mediocre, not creamy, almost like canned guinness. They obviously do not clean the glasses correctly since the head does not adhere well at all, on any that I saw. Glasses should be thorougly rinsed, any minute trace of detergent will destroy the head. I would have thought it would be one of the best poured too yet some had "bishops collars", and some had a miserable small head that was below the top of the glass after settling.

Worst of all is the robbing bastards charge a good bit more than their own RRP!, snakes.

I used to work in the Keg Plant in St James' Gate

So... the best pints of Guinness I had were from the 100,000 hecto-litre vats that contain the Guinness before they got Kegged.

    PERFECT

The Goblet, Artane... The Beaumont House, Beaumont... The well known Mulligans (probably the best in Ireland!), O'Donoghues (the Thing Mote) on suffolk st. and.. Eamon Dorans (only joking :p )
Was this whole post a joke, or just the Dorans part?

FFS, the pint in the Goblet has gotten steadily worse in the past four years, to the point of being undrinkable. As for the Beaumont House, jesus, it's dire.

Not as bad as what I saw in Sydney though.

Darling Harbour, one of the bars there. Went to the bar and saw that they had Guinness, saw two lads drinking it, so I asked them what it was like. Turned out they were English, and said it was alright, so I asked the barman for a pint. He turned to the fridge and took out a can, poured it into a glass. It was flat. They had a machine like a Soda Stream thing, he put the glass into it and fizzed up the Guinness.

The best are Grogans, JJ's on Aungier St (upstairs), and Frank Ryans on Queen St.

I think Mulligans and the Gravediggers are overrated tbh.

    The Sheds, Clontarf
    O'Donohoes, Merrion Row
    McGraths, Drumcondra

Very hard to leave the pub when the pints are so good

Best pint I've had in years was at John McHales (Johnny's) in Castlebar.

They also serve a Medium there which is 3/4's of a pint of Guinness

University of Limerick. Been 5 years since I was there, but the turnover on Guinness was ridiculous. I think at that time it was the 2nd busiest pub in Ireland after the UCD one. Full at 11am on a Monday onwards. Had many the tasty pint there.

Live in Ennis now and there really isn't a single pub that's decent. Maybe Bar 16 at a stretch. I like the porter in The Porter Stall in temple bar. Usually go there for a few pints fo 4X when I'm in Dublin.

i drink guinness every day and i wouldnt go anywhere else other than my local, the breffni in blackrock in dublin, fantastic pint, old mans pub but its worth it for the pint.
also my late grandfather and i used to go to gaffneys in fairview, the pint there is amazing.
my favourite pubs for guinness are:
    breffni (blackrock)
    gaffneys (fairview)
cross bar (harolds cross) used to be called Quinns
    bachelor inn (bachelor walk)
    neds (townsend street)
    kyles (coolock)
    pier house (howth)
    hollands (bray
    ramblers rest (ballybrack)
and a little tiny pub in bandon called the castle

Just be sure to specify that you want 'old' guinness or they'll stick you with the extra cold sh*te.

yeah thanks for the reminder, i wouldnt think about saying old or normal as i would like to call it.

saying that the new guinness 'north ice' or whatever its called is nice.

it would be nice to see toucan in a can as it was very tasty indeed

In Limerick: Toms Collins on cecil st
Galway: Murphys or Freeneys on Quay St

To whom it may concern, the best pint in sydney is in the Welcome Hotel, Evans St, Rozelle. Pure magic. Stay away from the "irish" bars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,346 ✭✭✭ErinGoBrath

    Mulligans, Poolbeg St.
    Smyths, Haddington Road
    O'Donaghues, Merrion Row
    Keoghs, South Anne St.
    Joe May's, Skerries

I was in Shehans off Grafton St. one saturday and seen the barman pulling a pint of Guiness for some lady tourist. Very funny because after the first pour the barman left the glass on the tray to settle, turned around to the till and when he looked back the lady was wolfing the unsettled 3/4 full pint down. Classic.

a wonderful stout pub and a wonderful pub all round, gaffneys is one of the few remaining pubs with professional old-school barmen who have worked there forever.

I checked out the Guinness at the many-times-mentioned Mulligans. It was a decent enough pint, but nothing to get too excited about.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Cafe En Seine. The Guinness there is consistantly excellent, and in my opinion, the best I've come across. Second place is awarded to The Stag's Head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,737 ✭✭✭sudzs

Has to be Mulligans for me!

And in Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick it has to be The Corner House! Anywhere else in that town is just terrible. :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 141 ✭✭g-punkteffekt

whoever said the goblet and the beaumount house - seriously - are you having a f**king laugh??? TERRIBLE pints in both those places.
I've drank in most of the famous-for-their-guinness pubs in Dublin City, and by far the best is Walshes in Stonybatter. I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet. Most of you probably haven't been there but it's worth visiting, because you'll never taste better guinness, it MUST be the best in the world, nothing has ever come close.
Mulligans is pretty good sometimes, but it's on/off with that place, I wasn't impressed the last couple of times I was there. The same can be said with the Stag's Head. The Cobblestone in Smithfield is pretty good too.
I've kind of lost judgement though at this stage, since I started going to Walshes, Guinness has tasted very lacklustre everywhere else. Get your asses to Walshes if you're a Guinness connesseur.

walshes does serve a great pint, used to drink there a lot a few years ago, glad to hear it's still good. that is the pub that a lorry or a bus crashed into in the late 70's which caused it to close down for a while, apparently all the regulars there had to find a new pub for a while and wherever they ended they were referred to as the 'boat people' :D well made me laugh when i heard that...

Guinness back home in Stradbally, Co. Laois [of electric picnic fame]

Ramsbottoms Bar, top of the town.

Tho, I'm toying with giving the best pint I've had to The Cellar in Abbeyfeale. Bloody excellent pints the weekend we were there.

Agreed it is the best pint of Guinness I've had in Sydney but that really isn't saying alot. It's way too cold over here and just not right. I've seen some places pouring Guinness straight into schooners without letting it rest, God Almighty!

The best Guinness i've had was in a tiny little pub called "An Bolg Bui" in Ballina, Co.Mayo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

For what it's worth, Downes in Waterford has probably the best Guiness in the area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,744 ✭✭✭kleefarr

The best pint of Guinness I had was in the Half Way House on the Antrim coast. It was a SOFT pint poured at room temperature and took about 20 minutes to pour.

BUT IT WAS DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT!!!!! Lovely. :)

Arthur's in Leixlip (guess where the name came from) do a good one, rightly so. I also quite like the Guinness in Doyle's on D'Olier Street.

Ah yes Doyle's I agree that they do pull a nice pint of Guinness there. I always end up there to end a night of Guinness drinking. Sends me home with a smile on my face.

But the best that I've ever had is in Johnny Fox's. I recommend it. :)

Gleesons Pub on West Street Drogheda, cannot recommend it highly enough, would rate it possibly the best pint of the black stuff in the town

Irish Arms in Lisdoonvarna does a great pint of guinness. Best ive had by far.

In Galway Taafes in shop street and O Connors in Salthill.

Toners on Baggot St or Slatterys near Landsdown Rd , both cracking pints !!:)

Mulligans in Poolbeg St totally over-rated ......

My favourite has to be The Hut in Phibsboro, cracking pint

Take my word for it, the best pint of Guinness in Ireland is at the sampling/ tasting point in the keg plant in St Jame's Gate, not much of a social scene though. :)

The biggest problem with getting a decent pint is that there is no longer any training to work in a bar. Those of us "of an age" will remember that lads had to serve their time as a barman. The current crop of barpersons - certainly in the city centre are of the over here for a few years, backpacker, student earning a few bob variety. Guinness to them is like any other "beer", you turn on the tap, hold the glass underneath and fill as fast as you can. The stuff is cooled to within an inch of it's life to facilitate this - generally takes around 10 seconds for the pint to settle it's so cold.

The Stawberry Hall in the Strawberry Beds on the liffey does a pretty good pint - they know what they are at there, Vera the boss woman has been pulling pints it seems since the start of the century. The barrels are stored in a cellar underneath the bar counter - which I'm told is actually below the level of the River Liffey accross the road -keeps the stuff naturally cool.

O'Cealachains on the Main Street in Carrick on Suir is'nt too bad either.

Best pint in Dublin - The Gravediggers.
Best Pint in Galway city - Taffes

Best Pint in Ireland - Bonners in Mullaghduff, Donegal.

    I know.

Last time I was in Gravediggers the pints were horrendous.

Walshes was a great little pub but they've closed it down to do it up so wonder if it'll be as good afterwards
The Stags Head hasn't been the same unfortunately since Louis took it over

    Ashton's in Clonskeagh.

Had a great pint in Bowes pub on Fleet street in Dublin a few weeks ago.
I was with some friends from England and they couldn't believe how nice the Guinness was.

The Clonsilla Inn a few years ago used to do great pints of the black stuff but not anymore. Still not bad but no were as good as years ago.

The Horsemans Inn on the main street in Castleblaney has a great pint too.

Had a lovely few Guinness in McSorley's Ranelagh at the weekend. The Guinness has improved no end since the last time I drank there.

J Finans in Charlestown, Co. Mayo has the best Guinness Ive ever tasted and this claim is based on extensive research:) Its an old style shop/pub with the shop in the front selling basically anything you are looking for. Pint is excellent, just the right temp. Im making myself thirsty now!;)
