Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    This might help some folks.

The Library is free to join. You can get the Borrow Box app on your phone, tablet or computer. And you can download up to 12 of their 14,000 ebooks and 5,000 audiobooks onto your account at any one time.

It's basically the Netflix of books and audiobooks but for free. :)

Do you know if DCC's lending apply to kindle at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,819 ✭✭✭Silent Running

I tried this a couple of years ago, but abandoned it when the Kindle format wasn't available. Has this changed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,512 ✭✭✭Wheety

SDCC website about Borrow Box only has a few titles. Does the app have more?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,617 ✭✭✭✭_Brian

    RB Digital works too.
Loads of magazines you can download with your library card.

    Kids use it here allot

Same here. From what I can see it is still an issue. Works on Kindle tablets but not a paperwhite.

Might be too much to ask to give some directions on where to download the app? (Android, Iphone, etc?) I'd appreciate that (and I guess many of us too) Thanks

Go onto the google play store and search for Borrow Box. It's pretty straightforward.

Yah only works with Kindle fire.

Borrow box works with Fingal too so that's good. Any reccomendations for audio books?

You have to sign up in person right? With RB digital you could use the temporary number, but I think with Borrowbox you have to go into a library.

I've just installed borrow box on my android tablet, entered my South Dublin library details in the app and borrowed a book. No need to go to the library.

Yeah - I know that much. But if you haven't got a library membership I think you have to go in, in person right? IE - you can't sign up for the library online.

No, you have to be a library member to use borrow box.

    Yes obviously.

So to clarify. If you are not a library member you to.
    1. Go into the library with ID and proof of address to get a library card
    2. Join Borrow Box.

In contrast, to use RB Digital, you can sign up on Libraries Ireland, and use the temporary number they give you, without ever having to prove your address etc.

    I can confirm that:
    - BorrowBox doesn't work with the tempID
    - RBDigital does work with the tempID

They have it for Android, Android Tablet, iPhone, iPad and Fire in their respective play store.

Enter your local Library name, Library card number/barcode and pin number.

Once it's set up you have the service then for at least a year. You might have to physically go in and renew your card.

    It's a really good service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 635 ✭✭✭heretothere

I downloaded RB Digital and logged in with a temporary ID. It is only giving me the option to check out magazines. It is because of the area I selected or am I doing something wrong?

Checkout = Check out to add the item into your collection, so you can track it (Read, Download, etc)

I've been with Cork County Library since 2002 or something, and have used BorrowBox before. A couple of years ago IIRC.

Guys, I had a problem like this about two years ago with my library card number. The librarian here said they don't know why it happens with some cards but the only solution that works is to get a new library card and number and try that.

It's something specific to Borrowbox, everything else seems to work fine with the problematic card numbers, and since Borrowbox service is provided by some crowd over in Australia, this was the simplest solution. I've been going fine since.

Also, if you only use library's online services but not physical books, just make sure you go in person to the library at least once per year and ask them to scan in your card. If you don't do this none of the online services will work for you after a 12 month period has passed.

That'll probably be it for me. Cheers.

I have a library card for Dublin City library which I used to use for the Ilac library.
It's a long time since I actually used it but don't ever remember getting a PIN.
Do I need to register online to get one ?

In Wicklow anyway, the pin is the last four digits of your card number.

If it's been over a year you will need to renew your membership in person. You can do this in any branch, not just the one you first joined.

Interesting Sunday Times article here which mentions the great free functions of Borrow Box.

    Audio books are booming.
More people are also choosing to listen to audiobooks, with 577,910 titles downloaded so far this year, up from 413,293 last year.

Free ebooks via Borrow Box are booming too.
Figures show that due to the restrictions imposed because of the pandemic, downloads of ebooks via the app in Ireland have increased to 529,416 in 2020 to date, compared with 345,877 over all 12 months of last year.

Yes it can, you'll have to download Adobe Digital Editions on your PC to read the book, if you use the web version of Borrowbox it'll have the link to the Adobe software when you want to download your selected book.

Would you want to read it on PC though? Not very natural

You can change the font sizes in BorrowBox and it can go quite large.... might be easier

We have used the Adobe Digital on a laptop for years, for someone with AMD. PC means you dont have to hold anything in hands, instead of swiping to get next page you tap the right arrow. You can get an even bigger font by adjusting your windows settings, so that all fonts and icons are larger. it might also be worthwhile increasing the cursor size.

Yes I would prefer using the PC. I use a Fire sometimes but find it irritates my eyes trying to read anything on it, even when I enlarge the text. I'm much more comfortable with my trusty PC. :)
