Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don't care for the whole idea of wokeness but wtf was up with this word in the Irish media? Seemed to be all the rage around 2008-2010. WTF is a non-national?

It’s clearly used in the context of domestic matters. A non national in Ireland clearly means a person who is not a national of Ireland. Likewise ,if the word was used in say Spain, it would then mean a person who is not a Spanish National

It’s a lazy and somewhat inaccurate way to say foreigner ,I guess

Hater : nonsense word that gets used and abused ,when one criticises or argues a view that may be unpopular , especially of that view is an informed one .

No words should be banned, imo. Limiting peoples vocabularies is just another form of control. Try expanding the scope of your own mental capacity, instead of trying to limit and control others. People who get offended by particular words should take a hard look at their own lack of tolerances of others.

The meaning of words gets abuse though. People use words in a statement or a rant and it’s clear that they haven’t a Scoobey doo as to what they mean . So ignorance shouldn’t be tolerated

    Shakespeare disagrees;

Hamlet asks his girlfriend Ophelia, "Lady, shall I lie in your lap?" Ophelia replies, "No, my lord." Hamlet, feigning shock, says, "Do you think I meant country matters?" Then, to drive home the point that the accent is definitely on the first syllable of country, Shakespeare has Hamlet say, "That's a fair thought, to lie between maids' legs."

The word "hubby" when referring to ones husband or wife. Don't know why but I cringe every time I hear it.

That might be a problem. I always strongly recommend using an Elasticsearch cluster.

Too fcuking pc and timid to say "foreigner".

I would bet if you or I were in China, Thailand, India, wherever, we would be called foreigners, not (lol) "non-nationals".

"Passed away", now shortened to "passed".
"Passed" what? A slow moving car? A kidney stone? We can't even say someone actually died anymore.

    "Other Jurisdictions"
a ridiculous phrase much loved by Irish politicians and RTE commentators to describe other Nations.

Only a question of time I expect before we hear about "Non Nationals from another Jurisdiction".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,974 ✭✭✭Chris_Heilong

POC(standing for people/person of colour and excluding all people considered "white") is a horrible divisive word that seem to set the stage for an us vs them type scenario instead of everyone just being people.

'Fall' instead of saying 'Autumn', especially when used by Irish people but also just in general.
My brother told me he is going back to college in the Fall - My eyes nearly rolled out of my head.

Irish people using any Americanisms should be forced to clean out sewers and septic tanks with their bare hands. And lick them clean afterwards

Because foreigner has become a racist word.

I don't blame the children of that word, but we need to cut the head off that snake.
