This chart from the ECM shows how the UK can be in the freezer while Ireland misses out, incase people are getting very hyped about reports on netweather and the likes. So just be weary about the forecasts you hear for UK cold.

Cork Airport's top 10 dullest months on record (not just December):

    3. Dec 1987; 20.5 hrs
    4. Feb 1985; 21.9 hrs
    5. Nov 1983; 23.9 hrs
    6. Jan 1992; 24.0 hrs
    7. Dec 2015; 24.3 hrs
    8. Nov 1968; 25.3 hrs
    9. Jan 1966; 26.5 hrs
    10. Jan 1968; 27.4 hrs

In the past 27 days (Dec 10th to Jan 4th), Cork Airport has recorded 16.2 hrs of sunshine (including 19 dull days and 14 consecutive dull days up to January 4th) which is just below that of December 1991 as shown above.

    Data comes from Met Éireann.

I`m curious as to how much sunshine has been recorded at Cork Airport since last weekend. There have been a few sunny spells in my area (about 30 km from there) over the last 5 or 6 days so I assume there has been some there as well.

There's not going to be uninterrupted cold, there will be milder interludes as lows interact a bit further north

Wow, you don't half jump to conclusions. Who said I wasn't enjoying the ride? I was simply commenting on one chart (knowing well that one chart in FI does not a winter make) Booing one chart and cheering another is enjoying the ride as far as I'm concerned!

PS Incidentally the chart I was commenting on was edited out.

PPS How do you know I don't want the human race killed off?

ECM says no at day nine, ten, for whatever that's worth. Getting model weary at this stage waiting for 'trends' and agreement between them. I remain unconvinced and sceptical of any significant cold spell upcoming between now and the end of January. I can't rule out February, for cold snaps, I can offer nothing theoretical or scientific except the feeling that if the wind is in the west still by then, the daffodils will be making headway. We've seen zero snow this winter, and hardly any frost, it just smacks of being one of those forgettable seasons.

Fully agree with you. Getting weary and sceptical myself. I just have this bad feeling that we’re going to be unlucky this winter. Even a nights frost seems to be hard to get. *Sad face*

TBH you guys should have became wary of these charts back in the end of May and beginning of June when I can remember the possibility of snow showing not far out into FI.
FI is beginning to look like getting to the end of a rainbow.

Cork Airport has recorded 2.4 hrs of sun this January so far up to the 11th (and that also equals to last weekend).

I think MT did say recently that the models should be ignored for a couple of days until they get a handle on the SSW?
Netweather is an amazing place to watch human behaviour! Grown adults losing the plot because a computer algorithm spat out a different result than they wanted!
Personally I can't see anything much happening in the next week or so, it would be great if the cold shifted further West.
Who knows what February brings, still all to play for.
Many thanks to the guys who post the charts throughout the year and explain for us noobs what they are showing. It is much appreciated.

I would say there is a better than average chance it will bring an Atlantic storm or two. A full month now since the last real stormy conditions so we will surely not go through the rest of the winter without getting any more.

How to build an igloo, page 7..

Yikes, if that system delivers around the 22/23rd we'll be buried in it! Long ways away still in FI but that's a few similar outputs i've seen for then. Can't help but get a little amped. Fun week ahead for chart watchers. They don't call it a rollercoaster for nothing!

For a dummie like me this is really hard to follow. The charts in FI look like its going to be really cold with possible snow storms but the posts all seem so negative?

Not a fan of the cold or snow myself I've to Drive on a lot of unsalted rural roads on my commute, so loving this mild winter so far.

Agreed. I enjoy reading the weather threads here but I've no idea how to read the charts.

It would be nice if someone posted a "dummies guide" for each chart

A Winter that I'd dread to experience was 1991-92 which was very mild, very dry and very dull. December 1991 was the dullest on record for some including Cork Airport but also the driest on record for most with little frost. Typical chart from that season:

Mowed mine today - great weather for it .

With a breakdown incoming and wet / cold weather on the way I took advantage of the dry weather while I could .

Thinking back to last March, this forum and the people on it led me to buy a tabogan from my local Halfords 5 days before the snow arrived .

My 10 year old and I made memories we'll both never forget !

Fingers crossed for all the cold lovers on here that they get some fun .😉

For me, this winter holds no redeeming qualities at all. No wind, no proper rain yet no drying, no fog despite the constantly high humidity, no frost, no nothing, and I see no real respite from this awful spell of weather on the charts at all. Yes, I know it is 'only' January 12th, but that still means that the guts of the best part of winter now behind us. Days will begin to lengthen significantly from here on in as we hurtle towards another boring spring followed by what probably will be another uncomfortably hot, featureless summer.

Maybe we will get some Beasty or Northy snow once again in Feb or March, but this just is not the same as experiencing the same sort of weather in December or January.

Agree. I think expectations have been vastly increased due to our few red alerts.
This winter seems a bit better than usual but hardly out of the ordinary.

I have to agree, so far this winter has been one of the worst I can ever remember in terms of cold. We are now half way through January and the last cold night we had was 31st of October, back in Autumn.

No frost or sub zero temperatures since Winter began, 74 relatively mild nights in a row, most days in double digit temperatures, no hail, sleet or snow anywhere below 500 meters.

Even if cold weather, frost and snow is not your passion, there has been almost no sun or dryness since 1st of November either. Sure we've had a few days without rain, especially over the past 3 weeks, but the ground at least here where I live, has remained somewhat damp the entire time, either from mist or drizzle.

I know the weather is about to get more interesting, we will surely get some frost or wintry precipitation over the next 2 weeks, but this first half of winter has been exceptionally bland, mild and non eventful even by Irish standards.

Boredom? Nah. A mild winter when folk can walk, get out, enjoy life without being battered, frozen and generally being treated like cod!

Only folk lacking in resourcefulness get bored!

The weather has been and is lovely. Totally grand.

Get out there and dig the garden!

First sunny morning in Cork since 22 Dec I reckon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,220 ✭✭✭pad199207

Certainly a wintery feel to the end of Met Eireanns forecast this morning.

“Wednesday: Rain will extend gradually eastwards across the country during the morning. Brighter conditions, with sunny spells, will follow from the Atlantic during the day, but a few scattered showers will develop in Atlantic coastal areas, becoming heavier and more frequent later, with a risk of hail, mainly along west and northwest coasts. Mild at first, but it will turn gradually colder, as southerly winds veer west to northwest in direction, the winds mostly light to moderate overland. Maximum afternoon temperatures 6 to 9 Celsius
Wednesday night will be dry in most areas, with clear intervals, but scattered showers will occur, mainly along northern, western and southwestern coasts, with a risk of hail and thunder. Very cold, with widespread frost. Min. minus 2 to plus 2 Celsius, coldest in the eastern half of the country. Fog patches possible also.

Thursday: Early indications suggest that Thursday will be mainly dry, with sunny spells, but cloud will increase gradually. Very cold, in light northerly breezes. Maximum temperatures 4 to 7 Celsius. Very cold overnight, with a risk of sharp frost where breaks in cloud occur, especially in the north. Min. minus 3 to plus 3 Celsius. Risk of fog also, in near calm conditions.

Friday and weekend: Early indications suggest that it will remain quite unsettled and changeable, with a good deal of cloud and some rain or sleet at times. Still quite cold, with a risk of frost at night where breaks in cloud occur.”

According to Met Eireann, Cork Airport has recorded 2.4 hours of sunshine in January up to last Friday. In my area we have had some some fairly long sunny spells at times since last Tuesday. No sunshine for over 2 weeks before then though.

horrible drizzly mucky morning here at Dunshaughlin, ground is very wet, not the sort of weather you can walk in without properly wrapping up to stay dry.
