Best Christmas Movie - Boardsies Decide

    PQxdJvP.jpg

    The rules:
    • 64 films in the competition, 32 first round matches.
    • Pick one of film and decide which you prefer. Give a reason. Films where no reason are given won't be counted. All valid votes will be thanked by me to confirm that they are accepted.
    • First to 6 votes goes through to the next round. Depending on volume of voters/contributors, this may increase exponentially by 1 vote each round.
    • One vote per player per match.
    • No take backsies on a vote once cast.
    • Anyone can vote, even if you hadn't submitted any nominations.
    • If there are votes for a considerable period, the film with the most votes will go through even if it hasn't reached 7 votes. Ties will be decided by me, if deadlocked for a considerable period.

And a final note on the mechanics:
    • Movies with the most nominations have been seeded to avoid playing off against each other in the first rounds.
    • To make up the 64 movies required for a knock-out some wildcards have been added (OP's choice), but these will always play against the highest seeded movies.
    • Match order has been randomised (ie, you won't necessarily see the Seed 1 in the first match)

Competition starting Monday, chat among yourselves if you like, but still no mention of nominations until they are closed.

Two of my favourite films. I'm gutted they're up against each other first round. But the rand is the rand. You should watch them Skunk.

I vote for While you were sleeping

I'l be honest, havent heard of the other movie but did check the trailer. Of those two, I reckon I would prefer the first one as it would remind me more of Christmas.

I think there might be a lot of movies here I will not have seen.

    Round 1 Match 1:

It will have to be "While You Were Sleeping" because it is a delightful romantic comedy. Also, I am not familiar with the other film!

NB, as things are slower than expected, first round matches now first to 6 instead of 7.
    OP updated.

    While You Were Sleeping.

Havent seen the other one, wouldnt interest me either tbh so While You Were Sleeping wins by default.

    Joyeux No .

Don't like While You Were Sleeping , too shmaltzy , so that's my vote !

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Okay three hours is plenty. While You Were Sleeping limps in to the second round.

Anyone who hasn't seen it, it really is a lovely romantic comedy. There are very few really good Rom Coms but this is one. Give it a watch.

Joyeux Noel is also good, but maybe not for everyone. It is a tear-jerker, but the WW1 Christmas truce always fascinated me and this is a great telling of the story.

    Harry Potter !
I love when they show all the films in order , over Christmas . Plus , my four year old granddaughter's favourite game is when she pretends to be "Gobby Elf" and I've to be "Peter Potter" :pac:

As the founding member of the anti Harry Potter Christmas movie alliance or the AHPCMA if you prefer I vote the family man

    Munster says no.

  • Registered Users Posts: 657 ✭✭✭irishejit

Harry Potter...haven't seen the other one but Nic cage in an Xmas movie?

Even that short synopsis you gave seems a ridiculous premise even for him. Dam yanks taking huge liberties with old christmas stories

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,994 ✭✭✭c.p.w.g.w

Harry Potter, because I like anything Harry Potter...but how is it considered an Xmas movie?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,127 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Harry Potter, it's on every Christmas and has a Christmas scene in it, that's enough for me.

Especially up against that Family Man muck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,421 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

    I vote Family Man.

Nic cage can do no wrong in my books, yes I know he has made more movies in the last month than most actors do in a career, nevertheless, Harry Porter is not Christmasy.

Mick, can I join the AHPCMA?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone despite the fact I wouldn't really consider it a Christmas Movie - but so far its the first film in the competition I've even heard, let alone seen.

    Just no to Nic Cage

    Nightmare Before Christmas for me.

I don't really like either but have watched Nightmare Before Christmas more due to having kids that like it so it gets my vote due to being watched more?

    Does that count?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

The Nightmare Before Christmas because of the music.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,994 ✭✭✭c.p.w.g.w

Nightmare before Xmas, it's a very different type of Xmas movie which is refreshing

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭LadySkunk

Nightmare Before Christmas because it the best Christmas movie ever that doubles as a Halloween movie! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,421 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

    I vote Four Christmases

I'm sure I've seen it, but even if I haven't, I despise ANBC, that skellington just freaks me out. Unfortunately for me, I can see it doing well here.

A nightmare before Christmas! I love it. One of my favourites! I love Jack Skellington. He's a dapper old skull! And you can watch it in October without anyone complaining that it's too early for a Christmas movie!

Gonna put up the next round and count both rounds when I'm back from lunch.

    Round 1, Match 4

    Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)

A man must struggle to travel home for Thanksgiving with an obnoxious slob of a shower curtain ring salesman as his only companion.

Stars: Steve Martin, John Candy, Laila Robins

    v

    Gremlins (1984)

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087363/

A boy inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town.

Stars: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,127 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Ahhhh feck it I'd have voted for any of these ahead of the previous matches.

Going with Gremlins though as I prefer it over Planes, Trains and Automobiles which is technically a Thanksgiving movie, not Christmas :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Gremlins, an absolute classic - one of my favourites to win the whole competition!

And in the other one A Nightmare Before Christmas, because its the more deserving of the two to go forward.
