Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This Way Up (formerly known as Happy AF) starts on Channel 4 on Thursday August 8th at 10pm.

    Aisling-Bea-This-Way-Up.jpg

Aisling Bea plays Aine, a whip-smart TEFL teacher trying to pull her life back together after a "teeny little nervous breakdown". Sharon Horgan ('Catastrophe', 'Pulling') plays her older sister who not only worries about her younger sibling but also about her own life choices. The TEFL school where Aine teaches brings together a room full of characters also trying to find their own hope, direction and happiness in this messy world.

Only know Bea from her stints on QI, but she always got a laugh from me. Will be taking a look...

I thought she was the one who did that "if people say women are unfunny do a poo!" thing and avoided watching this as a result but I realised I was mixing her up with someone else.

I thought it was a decent first episode, they work well as sisters

I enjoyed it too, thought they worked very well together. Good script, decent pace- I'll definitely watch the rest.

It was okay. It has potential anyway. Did think Bea overacted some of it, particularly in the classroom bit which was just OTT.

    1/10.
    Yawn.

Is it better than Finding Joy.

I've just watched all the episodes on Ch4 online in one sitting. Really enjoyed it. :)

There are people who behave like that though.

I watched it on all4. I thought it was great.

Bit annoying, two sisters arguing in multiculturaland.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,570 ✭✭✭vriesmays

And I knew from the first episode Sharon's partner was gay.

Was it when she said she had an ex-girlfriend the giveaway ? :p

The mother was the original mother-in-law in Mrs Brown's Boys.

I was really enjoying it at the start, in a similar suitation to Ainé, but feck her character is getting annoying.

I think her character deliberately puts on an act in the classroom in front of her students. I binged it all on All4 last night and really enjoyed it. I don't like Aisling Bea, I've heard her in interviews and she's very annoying but her writing for this show is very good and there's no denying her chemistry with Sharon Horgan.

I have watched the first 2 I enjoyed it, I think Bea is actually really good in it, you can tell the character is using humour to mask her inner turmoil, it's slightly more on the drama side than the comedy side some of the time.

New Aisling Bea program with Sharon Horgan. Aisling Bea can be very witty and Sharon Horgan is the queen of sitcoms with a strong female lead.

Average enough. Aisling Bea's awkward character is on the annoying as opposed to loveable side of awkward. Jokes fall flat a lot of the time. The only funny joke was the
    John Motson jacket joke

Some of the plot lines hit you over the head.

It is a very diverse program. Top marks on that front. Unfortunately the quality does not score as well. Not as good as Catastrophe IMO.

We have very different senses of humour. I found a lot funny, but I've a gallows sense of humour. But, the above joke did nothing for me.

They're all immigrants even though being Irish in London isn't the same as being African in London.

Yeah, i didn't think it was that great either, just the only time I laughed!

I really want it to be good as all the inputs are top notch, but the execution is poor and it leaves me underwhelmed.

I feel as though I should like this show, but somehow it just falls flat for me. It does have excellent individual moments - but somehow the sum of its parts just seem a bit ‘meh’ to me.

I watched all 6 episodes in one sitting last week and I really enjoyed it.

My wife was expecting a sitcom type series, where as I had already read that it was more of a "dramedy". Not sure what Ch 4 are marketing it as, but maybe they shouldn't push the comedy side of it so much.

Aisling Bea's performance was great. She really sold the character's road to recovery while using humour to get through the hard times.

Just finished the 6 episodes. Thought it was very good. The "blind date" of episode 3 cracked me up!

I was supposed to watch this with my wife, but woke up early on a Saturday morning, thought I'd put on the headphones and watch one episode... Thankfully my wife is a good sport.

RTÉ have announced a remake of this set in a Dublin language school; here's a still from the first episode:

    Was meaning to watch this.
Sounds interesting. Not like some other attempts.

Horgan and Bea are smart and funny so I'd be surprised if it wasnt good

I'd like to hear an explanation for the sisters' different accents. The older one was clearly the favourite and got sent to a posh boarding school, poor auld Áine had to make do with the local school down the country. No wonder one has a high-flying career and the other has issues.

In an interview with Alison Spittle, Sharon Horgan didn't know what Supermacs was.

its a bit of a dud.

First time Horgan has been off the mark.

Bea is actually main problem, not funny and pointless monologues and bad acting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 508 ✭✭✭d8491prj5boyvg

Watched the rest. I can see how the emotional stuff would resonate with some, the material is close to my heart, but the execution is ham fisted. The emotional punches don't land properly.

It feels like Horgan is helping her friend. Her production company and she's in a supporting role. It's a shame for for good writers without this network

True dat. That said, I can't see from where 96% on Tomatometer comes from (and there's no audience score yet). 3 episodes in, and it's very patchy, and a little forced; Aisling Bea's stand-up persona doesn't translate fully into this dramedy. It's a laughing clown scenario, where she can be pretty annoying sometimes. I do find it enjoyable overall though, and will continue with it.
For the type of programme it is though, Fleabag is far better.

    Who says they don't?

Really good writers will get a platform. Simply good writers may not be good enough.

I agree, That's exactly how it should be, but the evidence suggests otherwise. Bea is in the latter category, even fans of the show will agree, and got a deal.

I like the writing... and fancy myself a bit of a wordsmith, alas falling into the 'Good' category :pac:

Sharon Horgan sounds English to my ears, not surprising I suppose when she was born in London and spent a considerable part of her life there. Aisling Bea on the other hand sounds like she just arrived off the boat so to speak so I thought it was odd casting them as sisters

They are pally in real life and Horgan's production company backed it. I'm sure it was written with Horgan in mind but yeah, she she has that RP clipped accent to hide the soft Irish ts
