Done well with Erin's Own in Cork getting them to a senior final a few years back and I think he was coaching Modeligo when they won the Munster junior and has been with WIT and obviously Waterford so he's definitely rated as a good coach.

A great coup, Given that he’s been snapped up so early for next year gives you an indication of the kind of demand there is for him.

The eastern intermediate hurling championship must be Cat!

Time for a 8 team senior B championship FFS!

Congrats Ballysaggart, great to have the Bennett's playing Senior club hurling.

But I thought Ballygunner were going to have 4 teams Senior next year? :pac:

Disgraceful they should give up the sport altogether at all levels. Never going to achieve anything lol. Only joking

Amazing achievement by the club 3 finals and 2 big wins and a narrow loss in the 3rd

Congrats to Ballysaggart and hope they go far in Munster. They got to a junior AI final before so who knows. The Bennetts are the backbone of the team

Congrats to St Mary's who won the West junior hurling title. They will face Ballydurn in the county final for promotion and a Munster Championship place

The western senior hurling championship is even worse, with only one western team going onto become county champions in the past 26 years.

3 started. 2 on the bench. 17pts between Shane and Stephen.

To be fair, Ballygunner and MT Sion have won 21 between them in that time out of 26. Lack of depth in general

Amazing for a club like Ballysaggart to play senior. They are one of the smallest clubs in the county, a parish of less than 300 people. Wheras Ballygunner have access to something like 10 thousand. Good luck to them(both) in the Munster club

Kieran got 4 of those 17 points. Some achievement by the Bennett brothers and Ballysaggart. It's better for hurling in Waterford that they won and are now up to senior.

Bricky rangers won the football relegation final over Portlaw

Great win for Rathgormack. They have had some lean years but it’s great to see their perseverance paying off today.
Congrats to Ballysaggart aswell, for a small population what they have achieved over the past few years has been phenomenal. Get ready to see Ballysaggart v Lismore and also Cappoquin v Ballyduff ( the return of the Murrays) in next year’s championships.

    Agree 100%
Was talking to a few Bg supporters and in fairness, eventhough disappointed to lose, they acknowledged the best team won and the best result in the long run for Waterford hurling

    Ryan is the youngest

    Ryan is the youngest

Kyle Bennett started on Saturday, is he a brother or a cousin? Stephen Bennett was brilliant, very hard for opposition to do anything to stop him, particularly at that level. Hopefully ballysaggart can go on a good run in the club championship now

Tipp representatives will be Sean Tracey's as the other Intermediate finalists also have a senior team.

Tipp intermediate standard is weak owing to having 32 Senior Teams, reality is that our Intermediate championship is in affect Junior A.

I'm not from Waterford but did any of you see an article on Brick Walsh in yesterday's Indo. It was generally fine and a good tribute but to label him Waterford's greatest ever was insane. Anyone who read about John Keane would know better and what about men like Philly Grimes and Tom Cheasty?

How can one define 'greatest' ... the journalist was using 'poetic licence'. In terms of longevity, Brick is unequalled.

Was any other Waterford player better than John Keane .... no is the answer.

Keane Grimes or Cheasty be lucky to get a game Junior A in the modern game. seen the 1959 final recently and the standard was terrible. awful stuff to watch.

    Extract from Wikipedia.

"In 1948 Waterford made the breakthrough once again by reaching the provincial decider. Cork, a team aiming for a sixth All-Ireland title in nine championships seasons, provided the opposition. After falling behind by five points early in the game, Waterford fought back to lead by a point at the interval. Goalkeeper Charlie Ware made some great saves while Johnny O'Connor stymied Cork's chief scorer Christy Ring to secure a 4–7 to 3–9 victory. It was Keane's second Munster medal. The subsequent All-Ireland final on 5 September 1948 pitted Waterford against Dublin. "The Decies" started well and took a commanding 2–5 to 0–2 lead at the interval, with Keane scoring one of the Waterford goals. Dublin rallied in the second half, however, Waterford quickly regained the upper-hand and powered to a 6–7 to 4–2 victory. Playing at centre-forward Keane gave a masterclass, scoring three goals and two points and made most of the other scores. The victory also gave him an All-Ireland medal".

Comparing players from different generations is next or near to impossible.
Watching matches from the 90’s or early 2000’s now even shows how the game has changed with little or no ground striking, the sliothar pucked up to the forwards blindly and the strength and conditioning of players today.
It’s chalk and cheese, especially to compare Keane from the 30/40’s to now.
There’s no denying that he was the best Waterford player from that generation, as were Grimes, Cheasty and Walsh for their generation and Ken McGrath and Mullane for the 2000’s. And most certainly Brick was a fantastic servant and he’s a Waterford hurling legend, even if his hurling ability wasn’t in the same league as others.

Kyle is a cousin. There's another Bennett cousin on the panel too, as is usual with small county clubs

Now that the playing season is nearly done, can anyone see any motions been put forward and approved re change to playing structures and possibly a decent league?

I actually think that Brick's natural hurling ability gets played down an awful lot, you dont last 16 years and win an allstar as a centre back, midfielder and forward without having immense hurling ability. I think sometimes we mix up 'flashy' with ability and talent.

    Depends what constitutes 'hurling ability'.

Was he brilliant at reading the game, spacial awareness, determined and an immense athlete - yes to all of the above.

How many balls would he strike in an average game - maybe a couple!

Anyone who remembers Paddy Christie playing full back for the Dublin footballers a few years back will recall that he rarely kicked the ball - nearly always laid it off to a colleague via a hand pass. Was he a great full back - one of the best.

Were they cut or just opted out? Right call on Darragh Fives no matter who made that call. Too much effort and heartache for him to go through it again. Just wasn't meant to be.

I really feel that Tommy Ryan has underachieved as a Waterford hurler so disappointed to see him go but the show must go on.

We should wait for confirmation from a reliable source before writing lads obituaries. The only 3 that are definitely gone for next year are Shanahan, Connors and Brick.

Should have the league fixtures out this week or next I imagine with the Season ticket sales opening up

A decision on Walsh Park needs to be made. Do they rest the money in an account and start work after the Championship games next summer or do they start work immediately and have a good bit of it done in time for the games ??

AFAIK we only have 2 games at home in the league

They'll play games in Walsh Park, they're unlikely to get everything tee'd up before the league.

If they bulldoze the place in June they can play league games in Fraher next season without too much hassle. It'll be 12 months again until Championship games return, and those will involve Clare and Limerick who'll bring smaller travelling fans than Cork and Tipp - so they could potentially play with a partially completed Walsh Park.
