I hope the Irish fans gave as good as they got.

You're joking? Don't think I've ever seen an Irish fan throwing a punch in my life. Anytime they are confronted by opposing fans abroad, they get battered everywhere they go. The attitude of our travelling supporters is getting a bit patronising, especially in the last few years imo. A real attitude of "hey everyone look, we're mad b*stards just here for the craic" and trying to over do it for attention. A laughing stock in the eyes of every other fan base, which is dangerous when your confronted by opposing hooligans and fans who have no time for our nonsense, which leaves any Irish fans confronted very vulnerable when they are targeted. I'm not saying we should go around fighting either, but the fans should get in the real world and be able to come together and fight back in unprovoked attacks

I was there last year. The fans were passionate and partisan but I didn't hear one chant or song that could be classed as offensive. I know plenty of young nationalists who follow NI now. They come from middle class families. Ireland's medal hope for the upcoming Olympics Rory Mc is one, for starters.

He was raised as a unionist. He was never a nationalist. Ye the bouncey is a great non-sectarian tune. I wonder how many times the Euro's will get to hear the billy boys and how they are up to their necks in fenian blood?

This is a load of nonsense. We have hardly ever had trouble with other supporters.

The only time I have ever seen Irish fans getting anyway aggressive is when they have stopped young Irish fellas from acting the maggot and giving us all a bad name. The Scots, the Danes, the Swedes and the Dutch do the exact same. That's exactly the way it should be.

    Strangely enough...

Back during the qualifiers for the 2004 Euros a group of lads I know from going to Ireland matches were on a tram on their way to the stadium in Moscow for our match with Russia when a load of Russian skinheads got on the tram and came up to them. They asked the lads if they were Irish, the lads said yes (green jerseys were a bit of a give away). The Russians fellas then shouted at them 'we are Moscow UVF' and proceeded to kick lumps out of them, as they were leaving they started singing 'no surrender to the IRA'

    What are you on about?

Seriously, you might as well be a pisshead in Perth for the weekend.

Thank God the world has moved on since these pathetic few have last 'supported' their team at a major tournament.
Just a few sad clowns caught in a time-warp.

i agree 100% with what you said, I have a feeling if the Irish fans were attacked they would apologize to the attackers.

Down through the years there's been many isolated incidents where groups of Irish fans have been attacked in foreign cities. How couldn't there have been in the world of football? You named one yourself. In the main it doesn't happen to Irish fans as they don't fight with anyone, but on the occasions it does happen they get battered or run. Just look at 95. The fans from the above countries you named do retaliate when attacked in unprovoked situations, we just get walked all over and are seen as a joke.

if some thug attacked you down alley way and you couldn't walk away, what would you do? no one wants the irish fans behaving like those lager louts across the water but you have to stand your ground sometimes and stand up for yourself, its what we had been doing for hundreds of years.

Take off your blinkers here. They run or avoid problems simply because the republic don't have a hooligan firm. Nor do Northern Ireland no matter what you may think. Both sets of fans do have the odd dickhead but there is in no way a collection of them in a firm such as Poland, Russia, England etc etc

That is some horrible, nasty, aggressive, joyless rubbish.

The other fan bases consider us a laughing stock as we can have a bit of fun whilst at a tournament without rioting. Grow up and cop on to yourself

How is this nasty, aggressive and horrible? Pointing out that opposing fans rarely have trouble with us, but if they decided to turn their attention towards us we'd be very vulnerable? Maybe you live in some utopianian world of "having the craic", but not everybody has time for that nonsense, especially many hooligans. It was only a few years back that groups of celtic fans were repeatedly targeted and attacked over a 4 day period in Amsterdam because they were "fenian b*astards", according to one banner hanging in the Amsterdam arena. After reading this, I'm sure you'll be red in the face with more faux outrage

As for the post most Norn iron supporters I know would have a laugh with you republic supporters. It's only a game of football after all. We are both likely to get stuffed or get a few draws so it's no big deal.

What's a Scottish team got to do with you chum?

I get it now, you've never been to a match. Groups of fans don't always get the option to run away

A Scottish team with Irish links targeted because of those same Irish links chum.

I would defend myself as best I could, remove myself from the situation and if necessary alert the local police/AGS.

Your last sentence there is mortifying.

i think chanting take your shoes off for the boys in green is mortifying, while running away from thugs who attack you.

Will actually, the "norn iron" fans at least tried to stand their ground and not be walked all over in their back yard when they played Poland. If it happened to our fans they'd just take beatings when cornered with other Irish fans standing around and watching it happen, too scared to get involved. I've seen it happen and the world did in 95

Why would they get involved and get arrested. It's the job of the police to keep order not hooligans.

Red in the face with embarrassment perhaps. Why would anyone turn their attention towards us? I don't get why having the cráic/enjoying ourselves to you is nonsense yet being hardened and prepared for "battle" is to be encouraged.

    That's just pathetic.

You're purposefully misrepresenting what I'm saying. Im not saying "get prepared for battle", I'm saying some of the fans should have a bit of cop on. Why would anyone attack us? Why does any unprovoked mugging or attack happen? Why were the celtic fans repeatedly targeted and attacked (it was their Irish links btw). So no hooligan or opposition fan would ever attack an Irish fan because we are all great craic and everyone loves us, is it?

This is just complete crap. Many innocent Northern Ireland football fans were beaten that day. Innocent fans who just wanted to watch a match... I say again that Northern Ireland do not have a hooligan firm. Neither do the republic.

You seem to wish they did have. The rest of the world doesn't think it's big or clever. You just look like a dickhead. Stop acting like Danny dyer and just watch the footie..

I've never read such complete juvenile nonsense on here....

Well that's the point, isn't it? Not everyone loves the Irish. Many don't infact, and many opposition fans would take pleasure in attacking is, given the opportunity

Been to lots of Ireland matches yet never seen a hint of trouble. You are going to be disgusted by this though, we did engage in some mindless cráic and we had a great time without damaging anyone's property or engage in any assaults or antisocial behaviour as a result of alcohol abuse.

its called being a responsible adult

Lots of Irish matches abroad ye?

you don't need a firm to defend yourself, if you are out with friends on a night out, say 5 of you, and are attacked by another group for no reason other than you are from a different country or town etc. no guards around, what do you do? run? ring the guards? help your friends who are being attacked? just take a beating?
