Norn Iron hissing Ireland jersey in Dublin Airport

A quick link in the Independent showed Norn Iron fans in Dublin airport 'hissing' at an Ireland fan with an Irish jersey on.

    Link here: http://www.independent.ie/videos/sport/watch-northern-ireland-fans-hiss-at-supporter-wearing-irish-jersey-in-dublin-airport-34787985.html#play

No major issue over it, but the superior overtones of hissing at our national jersey in our largest airport in our country got under my skin a little bit. Childish stuff really but may not have been the most pleasant of flights to have been on.

So AHers what say you, (1) typical of the superiority complex of certain demographics in the North, (2) silly non-threatening childish banter, or (3) a jovial joke from our neighbours from the North of our island illustrating how far our two communities have come forward?

    I hope it's a mix of 2 & 3

I seen plenty of stuff with fans singing together and having a laugh.
I think most people know we're both supporting two teams with slim chances so may as well get along and have the craic.
    I hope so anyway.

Knew an elderly gent who got the **** kicked out of him by this type of scummer the last time our friends from up north were playing in the aviva.

You just have to bear in mind that there's a sizeable amount of unreconstructed bigots up there.

    I read that earlier.

    Barely worth acknowledging.

    Seriously, who cares?

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

That's nothing, I had Russian neo-nazis who didn't otherwise have a word of English, singing No Surrender to my face, luckily the Russian army was there to stop me correcting their grammar or things could have gotten nasty.

Face probably blurred out so we can't see the ROI fan smiling along with it.

What a f**king rag the Indo is.

Why would they know that song?

They had to come cap in hand down to Dublin to get a flight to where their team is playing, enough said.

    Strangely enough...

Back during the qualifiers for the 2004 Euros a group of lads I know from going to Ireland matches were on a tram on their way to the stadium in Moscow for our match with Russia when a load of Russian skinheads got on the tram and came up to them. They asked the lads if they were Irish, the lads said yes (green jerseys were a bit of a give away). The Russians fellas then shouted at them 'we are Moscow UVF' and proceeded to kick lumps out of them, as they were leaving they started singing 'no surrender to the IRA'

Yeah that is quite strange, must be something to do with their views on race. They prob identify with the British.

Slow news day at rag HQ. There was genuine hatred from elements of the NI support even up to ten years ago, some of them really despised us "beggars". It was never really reciprocated thankfully. The NI fans that knew better organised and got their act together alienating the sectarian element totally changing the atmosphere for their games. Seems to be younger NI fans heading over to France who aren't poisoned by growing up in fear/hatred.

If you ever get stick off them, 1298 minutes or thirteen and a half games without scoring a goal. It's still a world record I think :pac:

I know a fair few NI supporters up there that are sound and don't fit into the usual Loyalist paradigm, which I admit is pretty rampant.

I know a fair few Ireland supporters here who are equally horrible in a blanket sense about NI.

Just take each supporter on their own merits.

What do you expect? It's called rivalry. RoI fans aren't exactly respectful when it comes to Northern Irish, English, Scottish and Israeli fans, players and anthems (with the exception of Flower of Scotland) themselves. I suppose it's different when RoI fans do it though!!

The IFA have done a really good job cleaning up the support base of the international football team. WP is a pleasant, family orientated environment for the most-part these days. Plenty of young people from nationalist areas support the team now.

The IFA have done a very good job about cutting out a lot of the sectarian nonsense and are to be commended for it.

Saying lots of nationalists support them now is a bit of a stretch though.

People get a bit hung up on the idea that there's supposed to be huggy-feely vibes between opposing football supporters. I know a fair few NI supporters in the North that aren't knuckle-draggers but they'll rip piss out out of us, as football supporters do. As would anybody here (or indeed, any of my republic-supporting mates up there to them).

It's only an issue when you're a bonehead that takes it into real life.

I was there last year. The fans were passionate and partisan but I didn't hear one chant or song that could be classed as offensive. I know plenty of young nationalists who follow NI now. They come from middle class families. Ireland's medal hope for the upcoming Olympics Rory Mc is one, for starters.

Well, the worst place they could possibly kick off is France right now.

There's a state of emergency, 90,000+ police officers who are in no mood for dealing with nonsense and various units that have reputations for not thinking twice about using tear gas, tasers and water canon.

I wouldn't suggest doing anything stupid.

Attitude being taken is that hooliganism is a distraction which takes them away from keeping an eye out for terrorism. So they'll come down on it like a tonne of briques.

You're joking? Don't think I've ever seen an Irish fan throwing a punch in my life. Anytime they are confronted by opposing fans abroad, they get battered everywhere they go. The attitude of our travelling supporters is getting a bit patronising, especially in the last few years imo. A real attitude of "hey everyone look, we're mad b*stards just here for the craic" and trying to over do it for attention. A laughing stock in the eyes of every other fan base, which is dangerous when your confronted by opposing hooligans and fans who have no time for our nonsense, which leaves any Irish fans confronted very vulnerable when they are targeted. I'm not saying we should go around fighting either, but the fans should get in the real world and be able to come together and fight back in unprovoked attacks

He was raised as a unionist. He was never a nationalist. Ye the bouncey is a great non-sectarian tune. I wonder how many times the Euro's will get to hear the billy boys and how they are up to their necks in fenian blood?

This is a load of nonsense. We have hardly ever had trouble with other supporters.

The only time I have ever seen Irish fans getting anyway aggressive is when they have stopped young Irish fellas from acting the maggot and giving us all a bad name. The Scots, the Danes, the Swedes and the Dutch do the exact same. That's exactly the way it should be.

Down through the years there's been many isolated incidents where groups of Irish fans have been attacked in foreign cities. How couldn't there have been in the world of football? You named one yourself. In the main it doesn't happen to Irish fans as they don't fight with anyone, but on the occasions it does happen they get battered or run. Just look at 95. The fans from the above countries you named do retaliate when attacked in unprovoked situations, we just get walked all over and are seen as a joke.

if some thug attacked you down alley way and you couldn't walk away, what would you do? no one wants the irish fans behaving like those lager louts across the water but you have to stand your ground sometimes and stand up for yourself, its what we had been doing for hundreds of years.

Take off your blinkers here. They run or avoid problems simply because the republic don't have a hooligan firm. Nor do Northern Ireland no matter what you may think. Both sets of fans do have the odd dickhead but there is in no way a collection of them in a firm such as Poland, Russia, England etc etc

As for the post most Norn iron supporters I know would have a laugh with you republic supporters. It's only a game of football after all. We are both likely to get stuffed or get a few draws so it's no big deal.
