Why am I a grumpy bastard?

I have been informed that I am a grumpy bastard by:
    My girlfriend.
    A few of my mates.
    My boss.
One of those crap Facebook 'which dwarf are you?' tests.

I'm healthy, fairly well off and had a privileged upbringing.

I'd like to be more cheerful. Perhaps a religious faith would prove character changing?
    Any thoughts welcome, thanks.

Conformity is key I am led to believe :) So sure - subscription to a "faith" may benefit you. And even better - your commitment to it often only has to be superfluous in order to influence the opinions of others :)

Why would you want to be cheerful? Smiling at babies and helping old ladies off the bus? Way more satisfying loudly complaining when Spanish students step out of nowhere and stand in front of you to take a pic. Get up ta fucck :(

I'd say it's because you have a great need for other people to like and admire you, but you also have a tendency to be critical of yourself because you have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage.

Even though you are disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure inside and at times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others, and some people misconstrue this as grumpiness.

    .

That's your problem right there. See if you started with nothing or close to nothing, you'd be more grateful and less grumpy.

Sounds like one of those yearly horoscopes. A bad year for Capricorns, perhaps.

Or perhaps your definition of cheerful is flawed? Have you considered for example making scary faces at babies - and head butting old ladies as they come off the bus? :)

Maximus. Your post describes my character traits perfectly. Do you counsel?

If I could compare myself to one Disney character it would be malificent. That movie is basically me. I say I hate children, but they love me for some reason. And then I end up getting really attached to certain little terrorists but I would never admit that out loud to anyone!

Unless you throw their dad off the top of a castle at the end of this story - and then have them thank you for it - I am not buying it :)

I don't, but that just means you're normal. My post describes most people's character traits perfectly. ;)

Why are all these people making you grumpy is the question I would ask them!

Tell them to up their game.

My friend pointed a shotgun at a load of Spanish students years ago on the top deck of a bus.
He was in a bad mood after his car broke down when he was going hunting and had to lug all his hunting gear home in the bus.

Now he was a grumpy bastard.

It's hard not to be grumpy when your Irish. I take it you're Irish but you could be from the vast depths of Indo China. Either way, cheer up pal -:)

Agree thus a Lack of Vitamin D (low sunshine at 54oN most of the year), perhaps also combined with lack of Vitamin B, or maybe too much lead in the tap water.

To be fair those Spanish students think nothing of forming small blocking circles on the pavement and talking(shouting) non-stop till the wee hours, which could anger many.

    Are you grateful?

I read a yokamabob there recently on mental health (not saying you gave mental health issues just because you're grumpy!) that suggested people who are grateful and who show gratitude are happier overall.

I'm generally pretty grateful for my lot, and I'm generally pretty cheerful. No statistic could be pulled from that though!

Look in the mirror, point your finger at the effin a$$hole, and ask him: "exactly what is your fookin problem mate?"

Worked for me. I'm still a pain in the arse, but now I know why!

It's taken years to reach this level. Don't throw all your hard work away now. Stay the course and soon you'll be a grumpy old bastard.

Grumpiness comes from a need to control the world around you, a realisation that you have no control over anything but yourself, but a refusal to accept this fact and get on with your life.

So you become grumpy and moany that the world doesn't work the way that you want it to.

People who have come to accept this fact usually find little point in whinging and moaning about things they can't change, instead they just roll with the punches. And so have a sunnier disposition.

People who haven't even realised they can't be in control of everything are more often angry rather than grumpy because they don't understand why things don't go the way they want.

You probably realise there is no meaning to existence, everything you do is a mere exercise in futility and life is utterly pointless

That's usually when I feel happiest.

I'm plain sailing, fairly cushdy & was virtually born with a silver spoon in my mouth.

Incorporate a meditation practice into your day.

10 minutes of meditaion can be very benefitial. You don't have to know how to meditate to meditate either.

    Embrace your grumpiness

If someone says "cheer up!", punch them in the nose. That'll make them grumpy too
