This (coming) Saturday = (The) Next Saturday (we have) = May 28th

Saturday Week (as in 7 days from the Next Saturday we have) = June 4th

I've got access to a flux capacitor and the 1.21 gigawatts needed to power it, so "this Saturday" can be any Saturday I choose.

Agree, have had arguments about this in the last. This Saturday is also known as Saturday coming, it's the Saturday of this week. The 28th. Next Saturday is the Saturday that happens next week. That's the 4th. I would also call that "Saturday week". The following Saturday would be "Saturday fortnight". Saturday gone would be "last Saturday".

I think you meant "May" 28th. :pac:

Yes, I am in a different week. I'm in this week, which contains this Saturday.

This week is the week that is currently happening, next week is the one that follows. This Saturday hasn't started yet, it's the same as next Saturday in the current context.

If you are in a queue at the top and the person who is serving says "next please", will you turn around to the person behind you and say that they were called?

No, this Saturday is May 21st.

    If you're going to use 'this Saturday' about a time in the past, you have to use the past tense;
No, this Saturday was May 21st.

Even then, you're still fairly wrong (but I'm sure you know that).

This Saturday is shortened down from "this Saturday coming" ie the first Saturday after today.

Next Saturday is shortened from "the next Saturday". ie the first Saturday after today. Which is the same meaning as "this Saturday".

"Saturday week" is two Saturdays from Today.

Saturday last means the last Saturday.

But ask the the O/H and it will be a different answer. Over the years they have learned to know what I mean and vice versa.

May 28th is this Saturday coming, June 4th is next Saturday (given it is in the next week)

Anything else is wrong wrong wrong.

Wut? If I'm carrying the shopping in from the car and I ask you to "give me a hand," will you tear one off and give it to me?

    In language, context is key.

She seems like a contration upstart op I'd have asked to speak to her supervisor and get her sent for retraining.

Went to make a booking for next Saturday and the girl on the phone says, "that's June 4th".
No, next Saturday is the 28th says I.
    Saturday 4th is Saturday week.

She maintained sat week is the 14th June .
So, when is next sat. May 28th or June 4th?

Next Saturday is this coming Saturday, Saturday the 28th of May!

Saturday the 24th of June is Saturday week.

Personally I would call Saturday the 28th of May "This Saturday"...

This is absolutely, definitely, wrong without any shadow of a doubt and I think everyone else on the thread will agree.

...but surely in the absence of any other Saturday, next Saturday is the one we have not encountered yet? ie the next one, which is on the 28th of this month!

Next year is the one after this year, which falls before the one after that.

But this year and next year are not the same year, whereas you're claiming that this Saturday and next Saturday are the same.

    The accepted definition is simple:

This Saturday is the Saturday of this week.

Next Saturday is the Saturday of next week.

People do make mistakes with it though, so it's always good to check what people mean, especially in cases where a day this week is still somewhat far away.
For example, if someone told me on a Monday that they'd meet me "next Sunday," I'd double check what exactly they meant, as "this Sunday" could seem far enough away in their head for them to say, accidentally or otherwise, "next Sunday" instead of "this Sunday."

This is why I try not to use 'next'. Easier to go this (coming) Saturday the 28th or Saturday week, the 4th.

No no no, any Saturday after the 31st of December is in next year, all Saturdays before then are in this year 2016. Next Saturday is the Saturday still to be experienced, ie this coming Saturday or 'this Saturday' for short' :)

Saturday week falls on the 4th of June.

    Capisce.

That's very understandably confusing though. The accepted American convention is that 12am is midnight, but 12am and 12pm are used so infrequently in everyday speech and writing that it's irresponsible to use it for an important deadline.
Most people use 12 noon and 12 midnight to avoid needless confusion.

There are also contrasting systems of logic at play. You could consider that once the second hand has passed 12 at midnight then you're into the morning and it's am.

But the terms am and pm stand for ante meridiem and post meridiem respectively, meaning before noon and after noon. Since noon and midnight are both a minute long, many consider both to be exempt from being either am or pm, as they're neither before or after either 12 o'clock, with am and pm not kicking in until one minute past the hour.

That doesn't in any way respond to what I said, but regardless, you can use it like that if you wish but people will not understand you.

If you say to someone on Thursday "I'll meet you at 9pm next Saturday," they won't be there when you are.
