Went to make a booking for next Saturday and the girl on the phone says, "that's June 4th".
No, next Saturday is the 28th says I.
    Saturday 4th is Saturday week.

She maintained sat week is the 4th June .
So, when is next sat. May 28th or June 4th?

This Saturday is the 28th. Next Saturday is the 4th. That's how I would take it, and generally hear it used, anyway.

I think we can all agree that this is not a concise enough method for things like bookings, and a grown up would say "I'd like to make a booking for Saturday 28th".

Next Saturday, the Saturday next to now... on a calendar the Saturday next to now is the 28th.

Where are people going with the 4th? If I say next week, the week next to this one, would you say next week starts on the 6th June?

No, next week starts on Monday 30th. Hence next Monday is the 30th, next Tuesday is the 31st, Next Wednesday is the 1st, etc...

Next Saturday, the Saturday of next week.

Most people say next Saturday is this Saturday. Think it's an English thing.

Operate on a weekly basis. Mon - Fri are the weekdays, Sat & Sun are the weekends.

This week started yesterday, the 23rd. This weekend is the 28th-29th. Next weekend is the 4th-5th. etc. etc.

This comes up every now and then and I know that plenty of other folk see "next Saturday" as being the 28th - but it always seems completely alien to me.

Next Saturday, the Saturday of next week.

Next Saturday ≠ Saturday of next week. You are in a different week.

Yes, I am in a different week. I'm in this week, which contains this Saturday.

I've had this argument 100 times with my family. Some people just refuse to adapt to the this week next week master race.

This saturday is the 28th, next saturday is the 4th.

There's no argument even to be had. You're right and they're wrong.

This (coming) Saturday = (The) Next Saturday (we have) = May 28th

Saturday Week (as in 7 days from the Next Saturday we have) = June 4th

I've got access to a flux capacitor and the 1.21 gigawatts needed to power it, so "this Saturday" can be any Saturday I choose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,673 ✭✭✭mahamageehad

Agree, have had arguments about this in the last. This Saturday is also known as Saturday coming, it's the Saturday of this week. The 28th. Next Saturday is the Saturday that happens next week. That's the 4th. I would also call that "Saturday week". The following Saturday would be "Saturday fortnight". Saturday gone would be "last Saturday".

Yes, I am in a different week. I'm in this week, which contains this Saturday.

This week is the week that is currently happening, next week is the one that follows. This Saturday hasn't started yet, it's the same as next Saturday in the current context.

If you are in a queue at the top and the person who is serving says "next please", will you turn around to the person behind you and say that they were called?

Indeed :D Stupid Windows calendar - fixed :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,807 ✭✭✭Badly Drunk Boy

No, this Saturday is May 21st.

    If you're going to use 'this Saturday' about a time in the past, you have to use the past tense;
No, this Saturday was May 21st.

Even then, you're still fairly wrong (but I'm sure you know that).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 312 ✭✭Boater123

This Saturday is shortened down from "this Saturday coming" ie the first Saturday after today.

Next Saturday is shortened from "the next Saturday". ie the first Saturday after today. Which is the same meaning as "this Saturday".

"Saturday week" is two Saturdays from Today.

Saturday last means the last Saturday.

But ask the the O/H and it will be a different answer. Over the years they have learned to know what I mean and vice versa.

May 28th is this Saturday coming, June 4th is next Saturday (given it is in the next week)

Anything else is wrong wrong wrong.

Wut? If I'm carrying the shopping in from the car and I ask you to "give me a hand," will you tear one off and give it to me?

    In language, context is key.

No, next Saturday is the 28th says I.
    Saturday 4th is Saturday week.

She maintained sat week is the 14th June .
So, when is next sat. May 28th or June 4th?

Next Saturday is this coming Saturday, Saturday the 28th of May!

Saturday the 24th of June is Saturday week.

Personally I would call Saturday the 28th of May "This Saturday"...

...but surely in the absence of any other Saturday, next Saturday is the one we have not encountered yet? ie the next one, which is on the 28th of this month!
