Yeah slow cooker for cheap cuts, don't see much reason to put a hunk of meat you're happy to eat rare into it.

Cheap cuts can still be eating rare/medium but still need a long time in order to break down the thougher parts of the meat...beef cheek cooks for 6-8 hours and can still be pinkish in the middle

What do you cook beef cheeks in for eight hours and have them come out pink?

What about corned beef? Would it be better in the slow cooker or just boil it as usual?

I did try corned beef ,while it was nice it fell apart when trying to slice it...the cabbage on the other hand was very nice cooked with the corned beef ...maybe I just got the timing wrong 🤔

Has anyone tried cooking dried beans (chickpeas, black beans, etc.) in a slow cooker? I'm wondering if I put dried beans and a sauce in one overnight would I get something edible out of it. Or do I need to cook the beans separately first and then put them in the sauce?

I've made chilli with lentils (dried) as well as another with tinned black beans with no problems. Be warned though, wit the lentils anyway, you will need more water than you think, as they soak up a lot.

Thanks for the reply. I want to use a jar of sauce for convenience but I could add water to it to compensate.

How did the lentils fare in the chilli? Would they have benefited from being rehydrated (i.e. cooked for and hour or whatever) in different water first and then cooked in the chilli? I've only ever rehydrated them first and found the water they're cooked in looks a bit gritty after use. I'm worried this will affect the flavour if done in one.

They were perfectly fine having them cooked throughout the duration IMO.

You probably could rehydrate, but I usually just rinse them in a colander to get any heavy stuff off them. I'm a complete lentil noob, so that could be a culinary faux pas!

Here the recipe I used btw. Very very nice, and nice and simple!

On th etopic of jarred sauces, it's funny how well they work in the slow cooker. I tihnk I put up a post a page or so back about using Patak's curry paste, and it was incredible!

I use dried split lentils and also yellow split peas a lot in my slow cooker and they always turn out fine without rehydration. I would definitely keep an eye and add more water if necessary though. One of our favourite dinners is a lentil bolognese where I just throw in a load of lentils, split peas, onion, garlic, grated carrot and tinned tomatoes and leave it on low for 6 hours. Yum!

You'll find that a lot of the own brand stuff is made by reputable suppliers. Look for the number on the label that shows the origin, and it will lead you to the supplier. I've googled several of them out of curiosity - it turns out, for example, that Lidl's Ardagh cheese is made by a company in West Cork.

You'll find the number on the back of the tin/packet and it usually as a few digits, a country code and more digits.

I've used the Aldi sauce, and in my view it's way better than Uncle Bens or Lloyd Grossman, although I'd pick Grossman over Uncle Bens any day

I love Uncle Bens Chilli Sauce, its the best out there.

    Made this again today

    https://www.nigella.com/recipes/slow-cooker-lamb-and-pasta

Tweaking it everytime I do it. Minced lamb comes in packs of just over 400g so I only used one of those and swapped out the tinned tomatoes and 500ml of water for a carton of passata and about 100ml of water. Reduced the amount of pasta too. Definitely the best batch yet. I think next time I might add some mushrooms and maybe a splash of red wine.

I meant to come on here and thank you, made this a couple of weeks ago, and made the beef nachos that are linked on the actual recipe.....so easy and so rewarding......it was a big hit with us!! (especially combined with home made guacamole that for once was made with avacados at the right stage of ripeness!)

Anyone ever see a divided ceramic slow cooker pot? looking for one, trying to maximize my time by cooking 2 lentil dishes for lunches

I saw them in my local Aldi (Westside, Galway) last Saturday.

I don't know though when Aldi last had these as part of their 'special buys', so there might not be any in other stores.

I didn't know these existed, nor was I looking for something to do this but I might just have to pick one up! Thanks guys (I think) :)

My favourite slow cooker recipe at the minute is a minced beef tomato-ey stew. It's a bit like Sloppy Joes so you could have it on burger buns.
Halved baby potatoes or cubed new potatoes cook very well in it.

    1lb/500g of lean minced beef
    1 large onion, chopped
    1-2 carrots, diced
    1 stick of celery, diced
    A crushed clove of garlic
    A tablespoon of flour
Half a tin of chopped tomatoes
A mug of hot water mixed with a beef Oxo cube
    A tablespoon of tomato purée
    A dash of Worcestershire sauce
    Salt & black pepper
A good pinch of Italian herbs or mixed herbs

Sauté the veg in a little oil until it starts to soften, then add the mince and garlic and fry until the mince has browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Lower the heat and stir in the flour, let it cook for a minute. Then add the stock, tomatoes and purée, stirring well. Add the Worcestershire sauce and herbs, and salt & pepper. Put it all into the slow cooker and add the potatoes, stirring it well so the potatoes are immersed.

I give it 5 hours on high, and by then it tastes amazing and the meat is really tender.

You pulled pork aficionados will balk at this but I got the Dublin meat company cajun rubbed shoulder of pork. Stuck it on low for 15 hours, shredded it and mixed with 1.5 bottles of barbecue sauce.

    Divine, and so little work!

I have some lamb in the freezer and would like to make a curry in my slow cooker, has anyone got a simple recipe please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,859 ✭✭✭✭The Hill Billy

I'm presuming that you're looking for an Indian-style curry.

    For 2lbs lamb...
    2 tsp ground cumin
    2 tsp ground coriander
    2 tsp curry powder
1 or 2 tsp of ground chilli (depending on your taste)
    1/2 tsp salt
    1 knob ginger grated
    2 cloves garlic minced
    1 tbsp tomato pureé
    1 tin chopped tomatoes
2 medium onions halved & finely sliced
    2 peppers cut into chunks

Garnish with fresh chopped coriander leaves & a squeeze of half a lemon.

If you wanted to bulk it up you could throw in a tin of chickpeas.

Made a batch of lentil curry for my lunches. Very simple and tasty. It made a huge batch so will stock the freezer in work for a good while.

    2 cups puy lentils
3 tblspns Pataks tikka masala paste
    2 tblspns cumin
    2 tblspns garam masala
    2 cloves of garlic
    1 onion
    2 tblspns cumin
    1.5 tblspns chilli flakes
    chicken stockpot
    2 tins tomatoes
    2 sweet potatoes
    4 carrots
    2 courgettes
    3 peppers
    half a cauliflower

I threw it all in my 6.5l slowcooker, gave it a mix and for left it on high for 4.5 hours. Great dish to make to clear out the veg drawer
