Aye, connecting a GoPro is a pain.

Anyways, I'm surprised how small the mount for the Yi actually is, i'm probably going to use it just as it came as it seems to slot in perfectly behind my rear view mirror. The acres of cable is a bit of a pain as I only need 20cm of it.

The first image is good. You don't need to record the sky so the obstruction is alright.

I mentioned a while back here about why I felt it was ok to have your bonnet in 20/30% of the camera's field of view, as when recording the sky, it messes up your balance white a bit!!
The road/cars in the video appear quite dark, this is because almost 50% of what your camera is seeing is blue (bright) sky, therefore the camera is trying to compensate both by balancing the image (because the top of the image is so bright, it will darken to compensate, resulting in much darker cars/traffic).

I had the same issues when I first set up my camera, as I wanted as much 'useful' image as possible, but you soon realise that having half your video of the sky does nothing other than darken the road/traffic portion (bottom half) of the video.

Try tilting the camera down a bit so you see more of your bonnet (try to position the camera so that on a straight road, the cars ahead of you, along with the oncoming traffic are as close to the centre of the screen as possible).

You will see more bonnet, (and nothing happens on the bonnet), but I would rather see some bonnet with a good light balance, than no bonnet and a bright sky with everything else in the image very dark.

the only downside is you might get more screen reflection if the camera is pointed downwards, but a cpl filter will take care of that.

just something to be wary of when mounting your first camera.

Got the Yi connected up today, powers from the auto-dim mirror on ignition.

Not sure what's going, but the quality definitely seems poorer than examples I've seen online, I had it set to 1920x1080 at 30fps, perhaps the online examples are the higher 2304x1296 at 30fps setting? (which I thought i had already set).

YouTube seems to have heavily pixilated the footage, it might be still processing but even the original file isn't as clear as Techmoan's YouTube rendering. The pixilation starts to disappear around the halfway mark, but it still seems a bit grainy.

The lane departure warning works, but because it's not in-car and unconnected to the indicators, any maneuver across white lines triggers the alarm. In one section of the video, it just goes off randomly.

It also alerts you if you are too close to a car infront, including if you're in a car park or reversing into your own house. Both features are useless as a result.

Yi Dashcam just arrived this morning. Just a warning for anyone getting it sent to your work address, the package literally just had my name and the street on it. No company name, no building name, nothing. Luckily the security dude saw my mobile number on the package and gave me a ring.

For those that have the cam already, anyway to turn off the beeps when you press a button? Holy hell they're annoying!
Got mine yesterday too, not arsed installing it yet. I did install the app though, not great, took several restarts and disconnects of both camera and Note 4 to get them connected.

    Where did you buy yours?
Can't seem to find anywhere with the international version from an EU warehouse

Noticed the same myself on 1920x1080, picture seemed a bit grainy on the laptop but on 2304x1296 it was ok. tech moan recorded his clips in 2304x1296 too so give that a bash.

You're right, 2304x1296 is notably better. Had a quick spin there and it works well at night, shows the working of dynamic xenons well.

2304x1296 is probably the native resolution the Yi records at and if you wish to have 1080p recording then it must scale them down. The scaling down process is what probably makes the quality bad. Just record at 2304x1296 and you can scale it to 1080p yourself :)

Option two seems to only record at 720p... I'd want 1080 just to be sure I could make out a reg.

I just bought option one, haven't reviewed much of the footage. But it is pretty decent.

Is it tidy enough on the dash ?

It's maybe a tad large, but it still sits fine behind my mirror. Here's a not so great picture of my setup. The power cable goes from the passenger side glove box up the A pillar and around the top of the windscreen.

132 Nissan Leaf for sale - 100% electric. Costs very little to run and a very nice place to be. Range of about 100km at motorway speeds, more at regional road speeds and maybe up to 130 to 140km around town. Rapid charge on DC from 15 to 80% in about 15 to 20 minutes or slow charge at home or on public network at about 12% per hour. If it suits your daily driving its a great car to own and really fun to drive, accelerates really qell and flies around corners.

If it looks to good to be true, it usually is!
Buy cheap buy twice I suspect.

No experience of it, so I could be happily proven wrong!

I'd agree. I'm trying to find a video sample but I don't even know the brand.

There it is. This one advertising a G-sensor too. So it's not a special offer at all. It's just the retail price. There's been various cameras in that shape for a good while now, I recognise it from a lot of the Chinese shops online. Wouldn't bother ordering from micksgarage.

Aye I just used a cable tap. I took apart an old 5V USB cigarette lighter adapter and took the internals out, i'm now using that PCB as the 12V to 5V converter, with the Yi's USB cable now directly soldered on to it.
All that sits heatshrinked inside the headliner, just above the overhead light panel.

I might do the same with a new converter and replace the old one, I went over a ramp yesterday and the camera turned off, think one of the connections is bad.

    Sound.
Found one on geekbuying Spanish stock.
How much for shipping did you pay?
Shipping to Ireland is a mental price!
Anywhere else in Europe is only a third of the price!

€20-€30 I think, not the cheapest but arrives straight to your door with no hassle.

They are decent enough as an emergency cam, but for €29! Not in a million years,
Get the exact same camera for €12 on Amazon (I already have one)

I put a video up a good while ago using one of these dash cams, can't look/find it now as I'm only mobile today

Just fitted it myself now using the hardwire kit and the auto on/off works perfectly.

I did a really neat job too if I may say so myself :D
