What's goin on with you guys lotto over there?

From time to time, I like to keep myself informed on foreign news events, scanning news sites from Europe and what not. .

Anyways, while suppin on a "4 X" I stumbles across this strange tale on the Irish lottery, and how a "winner" in a place called Sligo doesn't seem to be currently able to get his prize.

Lotto bosses are remaining tight-lipped over a legal dispute with the 'winner' of a €8.24m jackpot fortune.

The National Lottery has confirmed it has yet to pay out the winnings of the rollover jackpot won on March 5.

As the Irish Independent reported a month ago, the lottery confirmed that it was dealing with the 'ticket holder'.

But nine weeks after the 'win' the money still hasn't been handed over.

Lottery chiefs issued a new statement yesterday confirming the money had not been collected but refused to say why.

A spokesman said: The National Lottery never comments on the specifics of the claims procedure to protect both the privacy of the claimant and the security of the National Lottery's claims process.

"As is standard practice, any claimant has 90 days in which to claim their prize and we are continuing to engage with the ticketholder. In line with our normal policy, we will not be issuing further comment until the prize has been collected."

I wonder what's causin the drama?

Personally, if it was led I'd just be telling em, if you're gonna be a tit about it, gimme me flamin stake back. :mad:

Thoughts?

Stolen ticket?
Under age player?
Owner of the ticket dispute?

Heard on the radio this morning that it was bought by a group on a stag do. Messy (the situation, and probably the lads after a feed of drink).

My theory, and it's just a theory, is that the ticket which has the numbers is not in great condition - for example, it's been through the washing machine or something.

So while the numbers look valid, the ticket may not be valid (per their terms & conditions I believe).

A bit like if you present your passport in really bad condition at the airport.

That's my thought!

Do you have a link to this? I thought the lotto was saying it was not anything to do re ownership??

As Ragnar said, it was on Anton Savage - shortly after 9 o'clock so it should be available on Listen Back by now.

Does it seem strange to you that a stag party bought a ticket....and actually checked the numbers on the same night??

Wouldn't have thought buying (and definitely not checking) a lotto ticket would be a stag partys priority....

I don't believe you are Australian OP.

Firstly Summer Bay is near Perth in WA not NSW.

Secondly everyone knows the correct abbreviation is Straya not 'stralia.

It was a big jackpot though (8.2m) and those tend to become more of an event. I can see how a group of lads would say 'Come on, we'll buy a few tickets and become millionaires!" and check the numbers later on to see if they won.

That's possible. But I'd say it's more likely that there's a dispute over who was in the syndicate and who wasn't. AFAIK all the syndicate members have to sign the back of the ticket but the article says one person came forward to claim it.

ETA: Yep, here's the rules for syndicate wins.

Not sure on that theory, I reckon standard lotto protocol is the ticket needs signed at the back, and the lotto people don't get involved in a dispute such as someone chipping in.

Never having won anything more than what the local newsagent bloke could pay out of his till, I'm entirely open to correction though.

i heard it was a foreign national who bought it

and its become an immigration issue , asking him for correct papers to show he's legally allowed to be here

i heard it off 2 sources ( doesn't mean its correct ) just my 2 cents

How does your immigration status affect whether you can win the Lotto? Is it in the T&Cs that you have to be legally resident?

i don't know i don't do the lotto

I can't see anything that would indicate that you have to be resident in Ireland in the rules.

I mean, what next? Showing passports and papers when visiting the newsagents to do the lotto?

If immigration aint in the rules, the ticket holder would surely win a case against them in a court?

From the news reports:

One person has come forward claiming to be the winner - but the delay could centre on who owns the ticket and how many members of the syndicate are entitled to a share.

The paper reports the 14-strong group decided to buy a Lotto ticket while on the boozy weekend in Sligo town.

But Lotto bosses are refusing to give any details on why the money has not been paid out - leading to claims there is a dispute.

Looks pretty clear cut and not to do with nationality.

Apparently when you buy a lotto ticket the person who prints it is supposed to scan it for you as well to make it official before payment . But this ticket was sold without being scanned and that makes it unofficial hence the dispute. I don't know if this is true or not but that's what I was told

Who the hell told you that? Have you ever seen anyone scanning a ticket to register it? No... because it's not how it works. Sure the shop have already had their payout an all.
