Went in last week on my day off, nice but a tad pricey, €6 or €6.50 for the baguette, now in fairness it's huge and packed full ,on Arbutus bread too so I did enjoy it but not sure anyone could spend that daily on lunch?

No sign of chicken either and the coffee isn't as good as Filter or Langford row. Hard to find an independent place that nails the lunch and coffee.

Warren allen will be opening shortly hopefully, they manage it in Bandon, so fingers crossed.

Wasn't gone on it when I went in. Only had a coffee. Food looked tasty- plenty of options but not the cosiest place to sit down for a while. Thought the coffee was only ok. Also big bug bear of mine is they offer different sizes of a flat white!

I visited Cork on Friday and had a nice lunch at Market Lane on Oliver Plunkett St - Onion soup and coriander chicken sambo. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was cordial. Also on a previous occasion I had lunch at the place across the street from it it ( Cafe Italia, not sure about that name, but it's close enough). I love Cork and wished that I lived there. A very sophisticated city, Perfect in every way.

Apologies in advance, I'm not into coffee at all... They all taste burnt and bitter to me. Himself is the coffee nut in our house. I don't know what a flat white is. But What would be the issue of having it in more than one size?

Flat whites are generally served as a single size, somewhere around 160-175ml. If it's larger than that, it's hard to see how they maintain the proportions. Even Starbucks only serve it as a single size.

I also don't see the problem with a larger flat white once they keep the milk to coffee ratio the same.
A Flat white is my go to beverage but I always find myself having to go back and get another one as there is never enough in one for me.

Curiosity got the better of me, so I went off and googled it. A flat white is milk foam on top of an espresso.

So, a large one could be more milk foam on a double espresso perhaps? Maybe that's crazy talk for some reason. But when I do order coffee for making tiramisu or whatever, my order is 4 x double espressos, so at least I know the Double Espresso part exists. :D

Because it is one of the ingredients. The most important one really. :pac:

I know that but why don't you just make the coffee at home

Probably because she doesn't have an espresso machine at home.

You order coffee in a coffeeshop to make Tiramsu? That's bizarre and very expensive. Why not just make it at home?

Because i don't drink coffee or make it at home. For the twice a year i might make a tiramisu, i buy coffee. I'm feeling very kooky and unique altogether now, thanks. ;)

Anyhoooo, went to holy smoke. Had ribs and cornbread. Ribs were excellent. Cornbread was light and fluffy. Needed cheese in it i think, but that's just cos i have a big soft spot for cheesey cornbread. Himself had a Dirty Swine burger. 6oz of burger with crispy bacon and pork on it. Filthy stuff. So dirty, you could not let this burger meet your mum. I'd go back for it alone.

Drinks... Had a margarita, twas so so. Too sweet, not enough lime. No salt.

Menu is a dose. Black tiny font ALL CAPS on brown paper. Every table there had their phone torch on getting a better look. What the fook is wrong with lowercase letters or even cream or white paper.

Decor is nice. Bit themed and branded maybe, But yeah, cosy.
Food makes up for it all. Get the ribs.

Had brunch in Fenns Quay recently. Hour long queue outside Liberty Grill. Crazy. Went in, got a seat straight away. Had a really good spiced beef hash with spinach and a soft poached egg. Free brown bread and a free coffee refill. Good atmosphere. Good staff. Very enjoyable.

Was in there on Saturday and had the same thing, very tasty! Also got a table very easily, the hollandaise tasted exactly like Liberty grill too and egg poached perfectly. Very pleasant guy serving us. Will go back. Didn't get free brown bread though!

I had to ask for it, maybe they felt sorry for my hungover head!

Was in Electric Sunday. Order a medium steak. I would hate to see how they would do a well done steak.

I didnt send it back as Im always afraid of what I may get instead. I just told the waiter to make a note of it.

With that said, it was still damn fine eating even though I know it would have been far nicer had it come as I had requested.

Eh if there's one thing I cant sit there and take is an overcooked steak.

Me too. If I'm ordering an expensive steak I want it to come the way I've ordered it! Otherwise I just won't enjoy it.

    where is it exactly?

It is where the little specialized shoe shop used to be or if you are coming up to the roundiebout tis the in the next row of buildings after the post office on the side..

worth a trip but it would be maybe once a week or something..Would like if they done portions of bread perhaps to go with the salads, but you can only buy a full loaf of bread..Tis Arbutus stuff and well worth it but needs to be eaten fresh really

    Oof.

I tried Yellow Sub - it is where the Sugar Cube was on Grand Parade. Same people and everything, just rebranding as a sandwich bar, with coffee and milkshakes. Guess there isn't a huge market for crepes...

It's good. €6.50 for a sizeable sandwich. I ate it all but could have been full if I'd stopped after half, realistically. A Cuban - described as pulled pork, gherkins and cheddar, it also came with a rasher in it. I wasn't complaining but I'd probably try something else next time.

Was waiting quite a while for them though - I managed to order and drink a full Americano while waiting. You wouldn't want to be in a rush I'd say!!

Happened to me in Elbow Lane and Electric. Was hugely disappointing in Elbow Lane as me and the girlfriend waited ages to go there. Haven't been back since either.

Thinking of getting my parents a lunch voucher for Perrotts bistro in Hayfield Manor. €78 for two people.

Worth the money, or any other recommendations for a nice lunch/dinner?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,663 ✭✭✭Milly33

Sorry haven't dined in Hayfield yet so cannot be any help there. Doesn't sound like bad deal though I am sure it would be loverly..

We recently had dinner in the Bosun Monkstown and well tis ok..

It was a Thursday night and the place in fairness was very busy. Nice staff there but our waiter was a little scatty, waited a while for him to come back and take our order, then he forgot one of the deserts or well someone did, the place was way too warm even the kids had to get up and go outside.

I wouldn't be rushing down there for main courses, would go back and order a selection of starters. We had breaded garlic mussels which were lovely but very small, and oysters which you could eat all day.

The mains it is like they are trying to hard, they are nice but just let the fish be fish no need for any fancy stuff.... Found it expensive also

Is there anywhere in town to get Breton style galettes now that Paradise Crepe has closed down?
